I. INTRODUCTION

Chicken broiler and egg production are the most progressive animal
enterprises in the Philippines today. The poultry industry in fact began as a backyard
enterprise but has shifted to the formation of very large integrated contract farming
operations. The growth of poultry industry in the Philippines has been impressive but its
problems include inefficient management and the prevalence of many destructive poultry
diseases and parasites cannot be ignored.
Poultry farming is referred as the raising of domesticated birds such as chickens,
turkeys, ducks, and geese, for the purpose of farming meat or eggs for food. Poultry are
farmed in great numbers with chickens being the most numerous. More than 50 billion
chickens are raised annually as a source of food, for both their meat and their eggs. It has
been said that poultry farming and egg production are the most progressive animal
enterprises today in the Philippines.
Poultry meat is an important source of high quality proteins, minerals and vitamins to
balance the human diet. Specially developed varieties of chicken (broilers) are now available
with the traits of quick growth and high feed conversion efficiency. Depending on the farm
size, broiler farming can be a main source of family income or can provide subsidiary income
and gainful employment to farmers throughout the year. Poultry manure is of high fertilizer
value which can be used for increasing yield of all crops.

II. OBJECTIVES
This activity aims to achieve the following :

 To raise day-old-chick broiler to 45 days

 To compute the feed intake and weight gain of the chicken
III. METHODOLOGY
Materials:
2 Day-old-chick broiler
Chicken pen/cage
Lightbulb (1 watt/chick)
Chick feeds (Entigra 200)
Cost of Feed: Php. 47.00/kg
Chicken feed (Entigra 300)
Cost of Feed: Php. 44.00/kg
Scale
Date of Purchase of Day-Old-Chicks: May 5, 2023
Date of Maturity (45 Days): June 19, 2023
Procedure:
1. Create a chicken pen/cage where the chicks can move around even when they get
bigger.
2. Connect the lightbulbs to the pen/cage through electric extensions to give artificial
heat to the chicks.
3. Put the chicks in the pen/cage.
4. Feed the chicks for the first 3 weeks with Entigra 200 feed. This feed is very fine
suitable for the small beak of the chicks and their digestive tract.
5. In the first 3 weeks, the chicks are given light 24 hours. 18 hours of light is given from
4 weeks to 5. After 5 weeks until 6 or more, the chicks have fully matured feathers
that can keep them from cold.
6. Weigh the chicks every week to compute the feed intake to get their weight.
7. After four weeks or 1 month, slowly let the chicks adapt a new feed till 45 days .
Entigra 300 has bigger size than the first feed. This may add more weight than
Entigra 200.
8. Weigh the chicken again and compute the weight and their feed intake.
The chart below is the format that will show the results of weekly weighing of the broiler.

IV. RESULT AND DISCUSSION
General Observation:
Poultry farming is a very satisfying practice of animal husbandry. At first I thought it
will be just feeding and watering them, however, I’ve learnt that there are still many
procedures and factors to consider before raising chicks. It is also need a considerable
amount of financial capital for the materials that must be used, purchasing day-old-chicks,
and the feeds and vitamins they needed.
Problem Encountered:
In the 3rd week, our group suffer a financial shortage due to university activities. Most
of the chicks suffer feed scarcity and lack of vitamins. Unfortunately, four (4) chicks are
counted in mortality. There is also an inside conflict between group members, so I decided to
raise my chicken individually after a month. The group divided the chicken 1 per person due
to the mortality of the chicks. The pro of my decision is that I can manage the feed intake of
my chicken, while the con is that I have to take responsibility of the cost of feeds, vitamins,
and artificial heat solely.
Feed Intake and Weight:
Broiler Week Weight Feed Intake
Day of 90g 1/8 kg Entigra 200
Purchase
1 1 200g ½ kg Entigra 200

2 475g ½ kg Entigra 200

3 650g ¾ kg Entigra 200

4 850g ¾ kg Entigra 300

5 1175g(1.175 1 kg Entigra 300

kg)
6 1500g (1 ½ 1 1/8 kg Entigra 300
kg)
Day of 100g 1/8 kg Entigra 200
Purchase
2 1 225g ½ kg Entigra 200
2 390g ½ kg Entigra 200

3 550g ½ kg Entigra 200

4 Mortality -----
5 ------ -----
6 ------ -----
Due to upgrading the feed of the chicken, the feed intake increases thus also
increasing the weight of the broiler. In overall, only one broiler attain maturity and can be
sold to market.
V. CONCLUSION, SUMMARY, AND RECOMMENDATION
At the end of this activity, I was able to raise 1 45-days broiler chicken with good
weight and body. By feeding the chicken an appropriate and suitable feed, the broiler body
developed and attain a weight good for market. Vitamins played a major role in ensuring that
the chicken will prevent diseases caused by bacteria, or treating the illness the broiler was
infected.
A weekly weighing and calculated feed intake gives the grower insurance that the
feed is suitable or gives the broiler necessary nutrition to grow. The grower of chicken can
estimate the feed to be supplied so he/she can be assured that the feed is sufficient for the
chicks or chicken.
The importance of poultry meat is known as a source of protein. Backyard poultry
farming is very common here in Philippines. Not only for meat, egg and cockfighting are also
the reasons why a lot of people engage in poultry farming. However, due to the always
incoming diseases like bird flue and other avian diseases, many growers failed to attain their
goals in backyard raising. It is better to have useful information first like building the shed for
chicken, the appropriate feed for a certain age group of avian, and the different factors like
giving artificial heat to the chicks before deciding to raise them. Because, it will such a waste
of capital and life of the chicken if the grower doesn’t know how to manage a poultry farm.
