INTRODUCTION
The Pythagorean Theorem is a
fundamental principle in geometry that
relates the lengths of a right-angled
triangle's sides. It states that the sum of the
squares of the other two sides is equal to
the square of the hypotenuse (the side
opposite the right angle).
HISTORY
Because of the fame of his religious- However, it was most likely found
mathematical school in Croton, Italy, the independently in multiple different
ancient Greek mathematician and cultures. It was used in Egypt, Babylon,
philosopher Pythagoras is credited with and China as early as the 12th century
finding this link in the 6th century BCE. BCE.
VISUAL PROOFS
Hundreds of methods have been 16
used to establish the Pythagorean
Theorem, and new proofs are
continuously being discovered. 9
Here is an example of a visual proof 25
showing the squares of the sides.

A right triangle is any triangle with one right angle.

The two sides that form the right angle are called the
legs. The side opposite the right angle is called the
hypotenuse.

A right angle creates many special relationships

leg between the sides and angles of the triangle and is
the basis of the mathematical branch of
trigonometry.

SUMMARY
The Pythagorean Theorem describes the
relationship between the sides of a right triangle.

It can be used to find the missing side of a right triangle,

which can be applied to solve many real-life problems.

Understanding the Pythagorean Theorem is a great foundation

for learning trigonometry, the distance formula, and more!
