PROFESSIONAL STANDARD
OF THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA
中华人民共和国轻工行业标准
QB/T 2724-2005
1 Scope
This standard specifies determination method of pH value and difference figure for
leather aqueous extract.
This standard is applicable to various leathers.
2 Normative References
The following standards contain provisions which, through reference in this standard,
constitute provisions of this standard. For dated reference, subsequent amendments to
(excluding corrigendum), or revisions of, any of these publications do not apply. However, the
parties to agreements based on this standard are encouraged to investigate the possibility of
applying the most recent editions of the standards. For undated references, the latest edition of
the normative document referred to applies.

For the purpuse of this standard, the following terminologies and definitions apply
3.1
Difference figure
The difference between pH value of a solution and that of its ten-fold dilution.
lt is a measure of the strength of acids and bases and tan never exceed the value 1. The
differente figure amounts to 0.7 to 1.0 when a Solution contains a free strong acid (or a free
strong base). The ionization of weak acids and bases increases with greater dilution, and
1
therefore the differente figure tan only act as a criterion for the presence of free strong acid or
base in aqueous extracts with pH values below 4 or over 10.
4 Principle
Preparation of an aqueous extract from a test portion of the leather, and measurement of
the pH of the extract, using a pH meter.
5.1 Distilled or deionized water, in accordance with Grade 3 water as specified in GB/T
6682 - 1992, having a pH value between 6 and 7 and a conductivity no greater than 2×10-6
S/cm at 20℃, stored in a freshly boiled-out container of resistant glass of low alkalic content.
5.2 Buffer solution, for calibrating the electrode system; it is preferable to purchase a
standard buffer solution for measurement. If purchased in concentrated form, the control
buffer must be freshly prepared each time. The length of time for which buffer solutions will
keep depends on their composition and the method of use. Control of the accuracy of the
buffer solution is therefore indispensable.
Used buffer solution shall be discarded.
6 Apparatus
2
7.1 Sampling
Samples shall be taken in accordance with QB/T 2706-2005. If it is impossible take
sample from standard position (e.g. directly taking from shoes and garment), the sampling
condition shall be recorded in detail in test report.
7.2 Specimen preparation
The preparation shall be carried out in accordance with the requirements of QB/T
2716-2005
8 Procedure
9 Expression of Result
10 Test Report
3
The test report shall include the following particulars:
a) reference to this standard;
b) name, number and type of sample;
c) detailed information of sample, and inconsistent condition between sample and
QB/T 2706-2005;
d) test result (pH value and difference figure);
e) any unstable pH value reading of extraction liquid (reading making pH value or
difference figure not recorded clearly);
f) difference between practical operation and this standard.
