Expt. No. 1
Date: _________

PREPARATION OF STANDARD SOLUTION OF MOHR’S SALT

Aim:
Prepare 100 mL of M/20 (0.05M) solution of Mohr’s salt (Ferrous ammonium sulphate).

Theory:
Molecular mass of Mohr’s Salt, FeSO4 (NH4)2SO4.6H2O is 392g/mol.
Hence for preparing 1M Mohr’s Salt solution, required Mohr’s Salt= 392g
Therefore, preparing 100mL, M/20 Mohr’s Salt solution, required amount of
Mohr’s salt = 392 x100 x 0.05 = 1.96g
1000
Apparatus:
Electronic balance, funnel, 100 mL standard flask, wash bottle etc.

Chemicals Required:
Mohr’s Salt, 4N H2SO4 and distilled water.

Procedure:
1. Weigh accurately 1.96g of Mohr’s salt crystals in an electronic balance and record the weight.
2. Transfer carefully the weighed Mohr’s salt into a clean 100ml standard flask using a funnel.
3. Add 20mL of 4N H2SO4 to prevent the hydrolysis of Mohr’s salt.
4. Add enough distilled water to the standard flask carefully up to just below the etched mark on its neck
with the help of a washing bottle.
5. Add the last few drops of distilled water until the lower level of the meniscus just touches the mark on
the 100mL standard flask.
6. Stopper the measuring flask and shake it gently to make the solution homogeneous and label it as M/20
(0.05M) Mohr’s salt solution.

Result:
Standard Solution of M/20 Mohr’s salt is obtained.

Precautions
➢ All the apparatus should be clean
➢ Observe the lower meniscus of standard flask.
➢ Shake well for making a uniform solution
➢ Always use distilled water for making the solution

ESTIMATION OF KMnO4 SOLUTION USING STANDARD SOLUTION OF MOHR’S SALT

AIM: To determine the molarity and strength of given KMnO4 solution using a standard solution (M/20) of
Ferrous ammonium sulphate. (Mohr's salt-FeSO4. (NH4)2SO4.6H2O)

THEORY:
Mohr's salt acts as a reducing agent in the titration against potassium permanganate. MnO4 – is reduced to
Mn2+ and Fe2+ is oxidised to Fe3+ in this titration. Mn2+ formed in the reaction acts as auto catalyst.

Chemical equation (Ionic Equation)

MnO4 – + 5e – + 8H+ → Mn2+ + 4H2O (Reduction Half)
Fe2+ → Fe3+ + e– (Oxidation Half)

5Fe → 5Fe + 5e
2+ 3+

MnO4 – + 5Fe2+ + 8H+ → Mn2+ + 5Fe3+ + 4H2O (Overall Reaction)

Indicator: KMnO4 is a self-indicator

End Point: Appearance of pale permanent pink colour

MATERIALS REQUIRED: Measuring flask, Burette (50 mL), Burette stand, Pipette, Conical flask,
Glazed tile (white), Funnel, Potassium permanganate solution, 4N sulphuric acid, Ferrous ammonium
sulphate etc.

PROCEDURE
1. Weigh 1.96g salt Mohr’s salt in an electronic balance and transfer to 100mL standard flask using a
funnel. Add one test tube (~20ml) full of 4N H2SO4, to prevent hydrolysis of the solution,
and make up the solution upto100mL. Stopper the flask and shake it gently to make the solution
homogeneous.
2. Pipette out 20 mL of the standard solution into a clean conical flask.
3. Rinse and fill the burette with the given KMnO4 solution.
4. Note the initial reading of the burette.
5. Titrate it against the std. Mohr salt solution taken in the conical flask till a permanent light pink
colour forms.
6. Note the final reading of the burette.
7. Repeat the experiment to get a concordant value.

RESULT
Molarity of KMnO4 solution = ___________ mol/L (M)
Strength of K MnO4 solution = __________ g/L

PRECAUTIONS
➢ Always rinse the burette and the pipette with the solutions to be taken in them.
➢ Never rinse the conical flask with the experimental solutions.
➢ Remove the air gaps if any, from the burette.
➢ No drop of the liquid should be suspended at the tip of the burette at the end point and while noting
reading. In case of coloured solution, read the upper meniscus.
➢ The lower end of pipette should remain dipped in the liquid while sucking the liquid.
➢ Always use freshly prepared solution of ferrous ammonium sulphate.
