Internship Report – AARON DUSTIN CHUA WSZS2019003

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

First and foremost, in the days of my academics and internship in undertaking my

Master’s in Business Administration, I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to

my parents who have always supported me in my endeavors and provided me with the

resources to be able to properly do what is needed of me. Furthermore, I would like to

give my thanks to my closest friends who gave me a helping hand in the referral of the

company I interned in and also with providing me emotional support and guidance

whenever I feel burned out or exhausted from doing my internship and my personal

business I recently erected.

During my internship, I would like to give my special gratitude to Mrs. Menzie Liao

Yubontoy, head of the finance and sales department of Fullblaze Plastic Packaging

Corporation who gave m this great opportunity to work in this esteemed company.

Furthermore, I would like to thank Mr. Henry L. Liao, the President of Fullblaze

Plastic Packaging Corporation for always giving me the encouragement to always do

better and strive to succeed and also suggestions on how to improve on my tasks and

even tips on how to improve my own business. To Hans, a fellow finance trainee in

my department, I would like to thank him also for initially showing me the ropes

when I first started interning there and for answering all my queries during my stay.

Lastly, I would like to thank the staff of Fullblaze Plastic Packaging Corporation for

helping me with documents and data I needed that helped me complete mt work and

submit my deliverables on time.

I would like to express my appreciation to the Soledad College and its entire staff for

helping us through the process of the submission of our needed documents for our

masters and for granting us the scholarship to undertake this Master’s in Business

Administration degree. It has allowed me to immerse myself in the Chinese culture

and enrich my Chinese language too.

I also started my own business last May. My partner and I first launched online and

what we mainly sell is space saving home gym equipment. We decided to do this

venture as Philippines has one of the worst cases in terms of the number of cases of

COVID – 19 positive cases here and its new cases are rising exponentially every day.

As of October 3 2020, there is already 300,000 cases here in the Philippines, which is
the highest number of cases in Southeast Asia, and is already the top 20 in the World.

This has fundamentally changed consumer behavior shifting from physical to digital.

Stemming from that point, since retail stores are closing down, and fitness gyms

closed down as well since gyms have the highest risk in contracting the virus because

of its enclosed space and heavy breaths from the exercise, we decided to target gym

goers who wants to work out in the comfort and safety of their homes. More on the

product details later, I would just like to thank my partner, and CEO of The Coach

Potato Ph for his insights and valuable marketing efforts on the business and his idea

of targeting gym goers who are forced to stay at home due to lockdown measures.

Moreover, I would like to thank Mr. Young, my consolidator in China who helps me

with consolidating my products from them the manufacturers and help me with the

logistics of shipment here. Lastly I would like to thank those hundreds of people who

bought our products as it is one reason to stay at the safety on their homes and do our

part in reducing the number of covid – 19 cases here in the Philippines.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This internship report was undertaken by Aaron Dustin Chua, an undergraduate of

Ateneo De Manila University who graduated business management at 2018 and

pursued his master’s in business administration from 2019 to present. He interned at

Fullblaze Plastic Packaging Corporation in Metro Manila, Philippines. The internship

began on the month of June 2020 until the end of August 2020. The internship lasted

for around 3 months. The fulfillment of the internship was required for the intern’s
scholarship master’s in business administration in Soledad College.

The functions of the internship are preparing the pupil to serve the requirements of

commerce and industry much more effectively upon graduation. This included giving

real world experience and exposure, therefore gaining first hand coverage of working

within the real world, giving the chance to find out about the self-potential of an

intern and abilities, connecting with each other, building a professional network, and

ramping up a CV during employment application and move to full time work position.

Internship enables pupils to harness the ability, knowledge and theoretical training

they learnt in the faculty and allowing them to change theory into practical real-life

scenarios. The intern's time with Fullblaze Packaging Solutions has truly illuminated

his understanding and knowledge of practical experience of the theories being trained

between the walls of the Faculty lecture halls and within the corporate atmosphere.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1Background of the Report

My Bachelor’s Degree studies in Ateneo De Manila university was from 2014 to

2018. I took up Business Management as my undergraduate degree. On the same year

as my graduation, I have received a scholarship from Soledad College to study in

Fujian Normal University to obtain my Master’s in Business Administration. I was

supposed to stay in Fujian, China for two years to finish my academics and undergo

my internship there. Unfortunately, however, due to the coronavirus pandemic, we

were sent back to our home countries for safety measures. Not only that, the
coronavirus situation in the Philippines only turned for the worse as cases and cases

began to rise rapidly. The forced lockdown and social distancing measures by the

government has forced us to take online classes for our academics and also start our

internship here in the Philippines. Given the pandemic situation and retail stores

closing down, numerous businesses had to adjust to the situation with a number of

employees being assigned to work from home given the situation currently. Therefore,

my internship was mostly work from home and managing the affairs from my

personal computer. I believe that the internship was to allow us to gather knowledge

on practical industrial business and corporate experience and be exposed the how a

business environment works in a corporate setting. The intern did a 10-week

internship from the start of June to the second week of August at Fullblaze Plastic

Packaging Corporation that was established in 1974 as privately listed corporation.

There are currently five departments at the company (Finance Department,

Administration Department, Marketing Department, Sales Department and Technical

Department) and each of them has been comprised of different departments and

divisions. The intern was assigned in the finance department. The main duty was to

assist my head with the implementation of the goals of the department which includes

various tasks such as daily checking the petty cash payment vouchers, bank statement

reconciliation, inputting data records on the system, and preparing weekly and

monthly financial reports. An internship is a considerable application through which

an intern is able to find out the practical features of what was being taught between

our academic classes in my master classes. The internship helps us master, and to
know what really occur on the area as what we have studied on our master classes.

Around the time the pandemic started on May 2020, I have established a personal

business with a partner of mine who also graduated in Ateneo De Manila University.

Like what I said earlier, due to the covid – 19 pandemic, and consumer behavior

fundamentally shifting from physical to digital, we started a business that targeted

gym – goers who used to always hit the gym but now could not due to the dangers of

working out in an enclosed space such as fitness gyms. My partner and I felt that this

is the best time to penetrate or enter the market and gain a market share in the fitness

industry. The reasoning behind that is due to the fact that because of strict lockdown

measures and government protocols of social distancing measures, retail stores are

closing down, and business are shifting their resources to going digital. In line with

that, although it is indeed terrible news on how the pandemic has damaged the

business economy, it is now easier to penetrate the market and compete with

established businesses as they shift to digital. Therefore, my partner and I decided to

open a business online and operate digitally given that most business has shifted

towards it. In short, the pandemic has help even the playing ground to entities that are

interested to enter the industry and gain a market share. Our business is named The

Coach Potato Ph and it specializes on space – saving gym equipment for gym-goers to

use at the comfort and safety of their homes.

This is a report on the objective of implementing the internship, the profile of the

selected business of the intern, tasks done in the business, the efforts of the intern to

the organization, application of theories to real life situations, many lessons learned
by the intern, difficulties encountered, conclusions drawn and also suggestions

produced by the intern. An internship is an extensive program through which an intern

can learn the practical aspects of what is taught between the four walls of the

University lecture halls. The internship help students to learn, know and understand

what actually happen on the field as compared to what they have studied in the

school. This is a report on the purpose of carrying out the internship, the profile of the

chosen organization of the intern, duties and schedules performed in the organization,

the contributions of the intern to the organization, application of theories to real –life

situations, various lessons learnt by the intern, challenges encountered, conclusions

drawn and recommendations made by the intern. This report also includes details on

how the business started, the details on the said business and how is it operating

financially and logistically given that it just started recently on May 2020.

1.2 Terms of Reference

In accordance with the needed requirements of Soledad College and Fujian Normal

University and as part of every academic student who has obtained the scholarship, a

student must be place under an internship preferably in a business corporate setting to

allow the students to gain practical corporate real-life experience in their respective

field of practice and are also told to submit a report about the internship. This

internship report will entail the profile of the organization, the purpose of the intern

and his contribution to the business organization, the learnings he experienced along

the wat and challenges his faced along the way.

Moreover, like what I said earlier in my executive summary, I decided to start my

own business in order to apply what I have learned in my academics in my

undergraduate and master’s classes. So alongside with my internship, I decided to

create my own business in order to experience what it takes to create a business

successfully and be able to enter the market with existing and established competitors

and gain a market share. Included in this report is the details of how my business was

established, how it is currently performing given that it was established in the midst of

a pandemic, and the lessons I learned along the way when I was operating my

business.

1.3 Purpose of Attachment/Expected Output

The purpose of this report was due to the requirements of the Soledad College. It is a

condition needed of every student under the scholarship of Soledad College. The

internship provides the students an opportunity to apply what they have learned and

gather some corporate experience relevant to their field of study. Furthermore, these

students would be able to understand the work ethic and corporate discipline found in

their home country. Moreover, this section will indicate the purpose of creating a

business and how it turned out after around four months of operation.

The purpose of this internship is as follows:

 To fulfill the requirement needed by Soledad College and Fujian Normal

University as per requirement of being able to graduate our masters.

 An internship provides a real-life experience and exposure. It enables the

intern to gain first-hand exposure of working in the real life which is

remarkably valuable towards the intern’s career.

 It enables the pupil to harness the ability, knowledge and theoretical

practice been presented in the faculty. In order to offer the pupils with a

chance to use the expertise in actual job situation and in so doing closing

the gap between academic work as well as the real exercise.

 Internship shows young professionals about particular companies and

industries they are interested in, projects their shortcoming, abilities, and

self-potentials.

 Create a network of like-minded individuals and be able to transition to a

corporate business setting full time.

The purpose of this creating the business is as follows:

 In line with the requirement of an internship in our course, the intern

decided to also attempt to establish a business in order to apply what

he/she has learned in his academics

 Setting up a business can provide a firsthand experience on what it takes

to run a business which can be proved to be the building blocks to an

even greater business in the future.

 Establishing a business can set up the foundation for the individual to

know and understand the important departments that comes with setting

up a business like the finance department, marketing department,

logistics department, operations department, and all the other related

departments in one’s respective business.

 Creating a business for yourself allows you to understand how like-

minded business owners operate and create a network and form

connections with these people. Furthermore, this gives me an

opportunity to understand how to handle a team of people and lead them

efficiently as to maximize the value out of each employee

2.0 FIELD OF EXPERIENCE

Fullblaze Plastic Packaging Corporation

As a Filipino citizen residing in the urban capital of the Philippines, I am familiar with

the recent happenings and news of the country and have the first-hand experience in

the current situation the region is in. Through the internship of mine, I had a chance to

observe the business structure of the corporation and find out about the performance

of the business and propose suggestions and recommendations for improving their

business. To begin with, as an intern, I must recognize the basic concepts of exactly

how plastic packaging products work and review their list of products so that I will be

fully familiar with their product offerings and be able to think of strategical plans to
market them. Consequently, the first task of mine was becoming acquainted with the

organizational papers, which includes regional and federal laws regulating the activity

of business organizations, and the company bylaws, agreements, and directives.

Second, the task of mine was working directly with all departments to be able to

recognize the working concepts, methods and also problems regarding the company.

Once I recognized the structure, management system, practices, and procedures of the

business, I managed to evaluate the performance of Fullblaze Plastic Packaging

Corporation in connection with best practices in the industry. From the role of mine as

an intern, I worked closely with the Finance and Sales head and also with employees

of every departmental division. Working with so many employees and interacting with

from different departments has allowed me to develop a relationship with each staff

member and understand how each department is important in supporting each

department as well. Furthermore, we have meetings every Monday of each week, we

have meetings wherein we discussed the data we have observed in our respective

departments like whether the accounts have been balanced, or whether the inventory

matches with the inventory in the head office and warehouse; we also brainstorm new

ideas and plans for the company. With all the assistance of my finance and sales head,

Mrs. Menzie Liao Yubontoy as well as the departmental personnel, I was in charge of

preparing and reviewing the reports to be presented.

While my general task on Fullblaze Plastic Packaging Corporation was management

assistance in the financial department, I also had an additional task in the assistance of
other departments in order to fully understand how other department works and how

well they integrate to each other. On my first day, I realize that the company did not

have a proper website and social media page. Their current website had a lot of issues

like lacking in contact information and product information and it did not clearly

manifest their vision and mission statements. They also do not own a social media

page that is essential for business big or small. Especially now that businesses have

turned to digital, the company should target these new businesses as plastic is

essential in every product packaging. Thus, my first responsibility was to revamp their

new website and to create a social media page for their business. Moreover, I was also

responsible for various departmental duties like the daily checking of petty cash,

payment vouchers, bank lodgment, reconciliation, the input of records in Microsoft

excel, and the preparation of monthly financial reports in the finance department. I

also had duties in reconciling the inventory of the warehouse and that of the records in

the head office to check whether inventory is accounted for and not being lost in the

count. I also was partly responsible for arranging the online registration of the

company on Shopee and Lazada which are the two most prominent third-party online

selling platforms across Southeast Asia. I was also part of the operations team

responsible for the operations and logistics of selling in these third-party platforms. I

worked with every division in an effort in order to evaluate current functioning, learn

the spaces in the additional support offered by the management departments, find

answers to the identified challenges and also to recommend much better means of

managing Fullblaze Plastic Packaging Corporation.

The Coach Potato Ph

It cannot be denied that the country’s state right now has gone for the worse. Right

now, as what I indicated earlier, it already around 300,000 cases as of the month of

October, which is the highest number of covid-19 cases in southeast Asia and is

among the top 20 in the entire world in terms of the number cases. When my partner

and I started this venture, what the hardest thing at that time was the logistics side of

things. Because our main product was dumbbells, we had to find a shipping service

who were able to ship a large quantity of dumbbells at the most affordable and

efficient method. What we chose was the shipping term of FOB or Free on-Board

price to our shipping agent that we had to source online. Free on board (FOB) is a

term frequently used in shipping terms where the seller quotes a price including

the cost of delivering goods to the nearest port. Arranging the shipment and

coordinating with the shipping agent and our supplier is difficult as one has to be clear

on the terms of their agreement and be clear on what the shipping terms are as to

ensure the safety and successful delivery of the items. Furthermore, another problem

we encountered was needing a storage solution for our products as these products

amount to about a third of a 40th container on our first shipment. We decided to

outsource a warehouse in Metro Manila for our storage solution. Looking for the right

warehouse was also a challenge as we had to negotiate to only rent a section of the

warehouse and also negotiate the price of the rent per square meter and the terms of

contract like the minimum time of lease, utilities fees and other expenses relevant to

our rent. We had to hire an employee that will help us with the logistics of our
business such as delivery to clients and unpacking the items. Not only that registering

our business and having to file a partnership and opening a joint bank account prove

to be a useful experience to have to establish businesses in the future. We also had to

fix our payment solutions in order to cater to most consumers transaction of choice

such as payment in cash, or direct bank transfer and even the usage of credit cards. We

partnered with the Philippine based company Paymongo who offers credit card

payment solutions for small businesses which is especially important in order to

compete with more established industries too. We also had to manage our social

media pages specifically Facebook and Instagram and regulate our advertisements in

these social media pages. Running our advertisements on these social media pages are

mostly based on trial and error and historical analysis on how our ads performed in

the past. We had to choose our advertisement audience right and make sure our target

market was being rightly addressed. The advertisements was highly useful in getting

our company out there and also lead to at least 50% of our sales from advertisements.

Lastly, I had to outsource the promotional posters for our business to properly target

our audience and make it look appealing to them.

2.1 Information on the Tasks

Fullblaze Plastic Packaging Corporation

I was assigned various tasks in different departments to fully understand how each

department integrate and work with each other, but I was formally put under the

finance department. As indicated earlier, I was responsible for:

 The filing of petting cash request forms

 Bank statements reconciliation

 Aiding in the handling of the account’s receivables

 Reconciliation of inventory in the head office and the warehouse

Filing of Petty Cash Request Forms

The intern's original responsibility was filing of petty cash request forms. The intern

managed to fully grasp that filling is a term used for the arrangement of files to be

able to have the ability to find them quickly and easily. The task given to the intern

was being done for each day. The intern had also been to guarantee that petty cash

stated had supporting documents attached. Filing process will be the main record-

keeping system for Fullblaze Plastic Packaging Solutions. It can help the company to

be transparent, efficient, systematic, and organized. Additionally, it helps all

individuals who want a chance to access the info do so more readily. Clip folders are

utilized to hold petty cash request forms tightly, so they don't drop.

Bank Statements Reconciliation

Another task given to the intern was reconciling the company's bank statements.

When the organization gets its bank statement, the business verifies that the amount

on the bank statement is compatible or consistent with the quantities within the

company's cash account in its ledger. This procedure for verifying the amounts is

described as reconciling of Bank Statement. The intern held this duty whenever it'd to

be performed. After the reconciliation, the intern reported to his supervisor Ms.

Menzie Liao the head of finance and sales head.

Handled Accounts Receivables

One duty of the intern was helping the supervisor with the handling of incoming

accounts receivable. Sometimes the improper management of the accounts receivable

can lead to cash flow shortage and imbalance of cash flow statements. Since the

company has a lot of business clients from all over the nation, the accounts receivable

was difficult to manage as there are a lot of payment terms such as deferred payments,

credit payment, straight payments and etc. that we had to filter and process. Q The

intern had the duty of confirming payments made by clients according to account

records and payments client claim they have made. This sometimes gets a little bit

challenging.

Reconciliation of inventory in the head office and the warehouse

Another task I did was helping with the head office in reconciling the inventory count

of the head office and those of the inventory count at the warehouse. It is important to

reconcile these the inventory accounts of these two locations in order to have real -

time information on the inventory account and prevent losses due to miscount. Having

real-time information on the inventory allows the busines to also see what product

experiencing the top sales and whether a unit needs restocking and also know which

unit is experiencing the least sales.

3.0 LESSONS LEARNT

During the internship, the intern learns the following lessons:

 The intern has grasped a good knowledge on how a traditional corporation

works in the Philippines. In Fullblaze Plastic Packaging Corporation, the

company has a hierarchy of command where decision lies in the supervisors of

the company. Furthermore, in this corporation, I was tasked to work closely

with my colleagues to share any important information available as we work

towards achieving the corporation’s missions and goals.

 The intern has gained a good understanding on how the different departments

of a business integrate with each other. I worked closely with different

departments in Fullblaze Plastic Packaging Corporation. I realize that the

success of one department is highly dependent too on the success of another

department. For example, the sales department had to work closely with the

operations and logistics department in figuring whether there are enough

stocks for a client and how will we get the product to the respective client.

 The intern has learned the utilization of applying Microsoft excel on using the

company’s financial system and inventory tracker. The intern has learned how

am established corporation works and how they track their financials and

inventories. In Fullblaze Plastic Packaging Corporation, they have numerous

sheets per client and a master sheet to track the inventory in the warehouse and

the head office. The financial and inventory trackers are reviewed everyday to

ensure that everything is accounted for.

 The intern has learned how to work with different people (teamwork) in

achieving departmental as well as organizational goal. Being an intern, despite

being assigned as part of the assistant team under the supervisor of the finance

and sales department, I also had tasks in order departments as well in order to

experience how each department integrate well with each other.

During the creation of the intern’s own business, he has learned that:

 It is the best time to penetrate the market since everything is shifting to a

digital economy, a business can lessen the gap of established industries

given that the pandemic has helped even the playing ground by turning all

sales to almost digital

 Social media marketing is a concept that has not been fully explored.

Given that everything is now turning digital, it is now ever more important

to be able to maximize reach through social media marketing

 The intern has realized that operating a business solely in the internet has

numerous advantages. It is practically zero to low cost as it is completely

free to sell on most social media platforms. Furthermore, running

advertisements and promotions on these social media platforms can

provide the same reach with running physical advertisements like

billboards, magazines or newspapers but only a fraction of their costs.

 The intern realizes that running an online business in social media can be

similar to running a business in retail. In social media or an online selling

third party platform, it is also important to engage the customers through

meaningful posts and promotions that encourages engagement from the

customers. In retail, one needs to respond to the queries of a consumer and

likewise in running a business online, one needs to reply to inquring

consumers asap in order to close the deal fast before they inquire with a

different business.
 The intern learned how to set us a financial tracker for managing the sales,

cost and profit numbers in Microsoft excel. Furthermore, this financial

tracker also accounts for inventory management in real-time to know

firsthand what inventory needs restocking and if there are any discrepancy

with the count.

 The intern learned how to properly coordinate with the staff of the

warehouse with operations and logistics. We develop a system using

googles sheets to have real-time inventory control of our items.

Furthermore, we also communicate through social media and get updates

from them there

 The intern experienced firsthand how importing from the other countries

work and what documents needs to be prepared and what needs to be done

in order get the shipment without delay

4.0 CHALLENGES

5.0 CONCLUSION

The internship program is an achievement to the intern. It provided the intern with

real-life experience in what it feels to work in a corporate setting in the Philippines.

Furthermore, Fullblaze Plastic Packaging has allowed the intern to be immersed into

different kind of departments that help the intern prepare himself for working in the

corporate setting. It gives an insight on how an established corporation works and

what to expect from a successful corporation and help me create my own successful

business someday. This internship has prepared the student to be ready to serve the

needs of industry and commerce more effectively upon graduation. This included

providing real life experience and exposure, thus gaining first-hand exposure of

working in the real world, granting the opportunity to learn more about the intern self-

potentials and abilities, getting connected and developing professional network. I

gained a lot of experience, especially in the conducting of internal audit. Before the

placement took place, my ideas did not match the experiences I have gained during

my internship. This internship was definitely an introduction to the actual work field

for me. I have learned to work in a business organization and apply my knowledge

into practice. I want to express my sincerest gratitude to the management of Fullblaze

Plastic Packaging Corporation and most especially to my financial and sales

supervisor Ms. Menzie Liao and to all the staff of the corporation who entrained all

my questions and helped me with my tasks. I would also like to add that this time is

the perfect time to try out a business venture since the everything is now turning

towards being digital, it has allowed new businesses to even the playing ground to

established businesses and compete with each other to see which has more dominance

online. It has allowed me to experience what it takes to run a business. To report, by

July 2020, we already have around 1 million PHP of revenue in two months. I believe

that this a relatively good performance considering that we were just operational in

two months and we were doing business in a pandemic which means that the

disposable income of an individual is considerable lowered compared to pre -

pandemic since most if not all business are affected. Moreover, erecting a business

over social media has allowed me to learn about marketing on social media and how

cost-efficient it is to operate and run advertisements to expand one’s reach. Overall,

creating a business gave me a valuable lesson that no academics can teach which is

the firsthand experience it can provide.

the coronavirus situation in the Philippines only turned for the worse as cases and cases began to
rise rapidly. The forced lockdown and social distancing measures by the government has forced us
to take online classes for our academics and also start our internship here in the Philippines. Given
the pandemic situation and retail stores closing down, numerous businesses had to adjust to the
situation with a number of employees being assigned to work from home given the situation
currently. Therefore, my internship was mostly work from home and managing the affairs from
my personal computer. I believe that the internship was to allow us to gather knowledge on
practical industrial business and corporate experience and be exposed the how a business
environment works in a corporate setting. The intern did a 10-week internship from the start of
June to the second week of August at Fullblaze Plastic Packaging Corporation that was established
in 1974 as privately listed corporation. There are currently five departments at the company
(Finance Department, Administration Department, Marketing Department, Sales Department and
Technical Department) and each of them has been comprised of different departments and
divisions. The intern was assigned in the finance department. The main duty was to assist my head
with the implementation of the goals of the department which includes various tasks such as daily
checking the petty cash payment vouchers, bank statement reconciliation, inputting data records
on the system, and preparing weekly and monthly financial reports. An internship is a considerable
application through which an intern is able to find out the practical features of what was being
taught between our academic classes in my master classes. The internship helps us master, and to
know what really occur on the area as what we have studied on our master classes.
Around the time the pandemic started on May 2020, I have established a personal business with a
partner of mine who also graduated in Ateneo De Manila University. Like what I said earlier, due
to the covid – 19 pandemic, and consumer behavior fundamentally shifting from physical to
digital, we started a business that targeted gym – goers who used to always hit the gym but now
could not due to the dangers of working out in an enclosed space such as fitness gyms. My partner
and I felt that this is the best time to penetrate or enter the market and gain a market share in the
fitness industry. The reasoning behind that is due to the fact that because of strict lockdown
measures and government protocols of social distancing measures, retail stores are closing down,
and business are shifting their resources to going digital. In line with that, although it is indeed
terrible news on how the pandemic has damaged the business economy, it is now easier to
penetrate the market and compete with established businesses as they shift to digital. Therefore,
my partner and I decided to open a business online and operate digitally given that most business
has shifted towards it. In short, the pandemic has help even the playing ground to entities that are
interested to enter the industry and gain a market share. Our business is named The Coach Potato
Ph and it specializes on space – saving gym equipment for gym-goers to use at the comfort and
safety of their homes.

Thesis writing during a pandemic was tougher than I thought. Initially, I thought
that I would have more time to focus on my thesis, but the pandemic and lockdown
has given us problems regarding finances and anxiety because of the virus.
Furthermore, being a diabetic type 1 person, I had to constantly be aware of my
surroundings and stay as safe as possible as it can be deadly for me if I catch the virus
given that my immune system is already compromised. My endocrinologist warned
me to not go outside the safety of my home as my immune system is already
compromised. As a result, my initial plans of data collection and interviewing
business owners in person has been cancelled as retail stores are also forced to close.
In addition to that, we were also required to do our internship along without thesis
writing which proved to be extensively difficult as the internship work period takes up
the whole day and most of the time we are only able to work on our thesis on the
weekends and sometimes even that is difficult due to internship work backlogs and
spending the weekend with the family. I was also managing my own business, which I
just established in May 2020. Handling that with thesis and the internship was
difficult and stressful. My business performed really well, that is why it took up a bulk
of my time as well as I was in charge of the logistics and operations of the business,
and our revenue reached 1 million in just two months. Despite these hurdles, I still
managed to persevere and did my research for my thesis. Data collection was another
obstacle as my research about social media requires me to get data on small and micro
enterprises which I initially planned on going to establishments around metro manila
for an interview. The lockdown measures prevented that and therefore we had to
switch to online surveys and online interviews. Thesis writing in China seems to be
more technical in the formatting of their thesis paper and prevents biased reviews
through blind reviews of other professors. In the end, I was able to finish my research

paper with the help of my friends and family and also my mentor 魏国江 for helping
me with the formation of my thesis title and the valuable feedbacks from him as well.
The research title of the authors report is the Social Media Digital Adoption of
Small and Micro Enterprises. The author chose this type of research as it has a high
relevance towards the present age. Owing to the fast urbanization and fast-moving
technological advances, the present age has been coined by most as the “Digital Age”.
In addition to that, especially now that the world has been inflicted by the coronavirus
pandemic, everything has shifted digitally, with retail stores closing down and online
shopping becoming dominant as lockdown and social distancing measures take place.
Given that the Philippines is still a developing country, the researchers was interested
in gauging the level of the (ICT) information and communications technology in the
country, specifically social media and the level of adoption rates it had in the
Philippines, and how the Philippines has integrated it well in their enterprises
knowing that it was popularly named as the “Social Media Capital of the World”. For
starters, social media usually provides a business with a low-cost platform of
operating the business, developing one’s personal branding and developing a personal
relationship with the consumer. Next is the communication part, social media enables
businesses to easily engage with customers along with staff members immediately
without needing them meet face to face. This also caters to a wider public since for
instance in the Philippines, social media penetration is around at 70%, therefore
groups that use social networking will typically have a broader access to their
respective industry. Lastly, social media enables a company to get immediate
responses from its clients from their unbiased and personal reviews that is essential
for a company in improving itself
The researchers did a background study on the Philippines’ demographic statistics
and how the digital economy is performing in relation with the usage of their social
media. They also research on the different perspectives of social media and its
different contexts. Furthermore, the researchers defined the related terms by sourcing
secondary sources in the related literature. The researchers then handed out surveys to
small and micro enterprise owners that match the criteria needed. Social media
adoption rates were collected and analyzed in 100 respondents to determine whether
the enterprises in the Philippines were adopting social media and the factors that
influence their adoption and barriers that prevent them from adopting social media.
In conclusion while it is true that the covid-19 pandemic has significantly affected
the students learning experience with classes and consultations turning online due to
the strict lockdown measures in the country, and thesis research being impacted as
well as students are not allowed to go out at the safety of their homes, I was able to
adapt by shifting the market research data collection through the use of online surveys
and secondary data analysis from previous studies. Furthermore, I believe that this
research topic is highly relevant with the current events that has been happening with
the pandemic and business behavior shifting to being digital. This research can bring
awareness and the importance of adopting a social media strategy especially now that
retail stores are closing down their stores one by one as consumers are reluctant to go
out as the covid-19 rates continue to increase until now in the country. This study aims
to highlight and give emphasis that social media adoption would be one of the key
strategies of business soon and soon it would be the battle of which business has a
bigger dominant digital footprint and how well their digital marketing is and their
proficiency in the use of social media strategies and tools to be able to expand their
reach and achieve sales targets.
