2. Vibration of Conductor
Wind induces mechanical vibration of conductor cables vertical to its direction of flow.
As practical experience shows, this leads to conductor damages in the form of wire
breakage around fittings and endurance failure of the fittings themselves.

Experimental studies have shown - in relation to high-frequency conductor vibration

at intervals of approx. 0.1 Hertz between frequencies of adjacent forms of natural
vibration - that, in the event of minor changes in wind speed, the prevailing resonant
vibration is maintained, but as and when the wind speed increases further, it locks in
with the adjacent natural form of vibration (lock-in effect).
This means that for any wind speed in the range of 1 m/s and 7(9) m/s, resonant
transverse vibrations are to be expected. Since turbulence shedding frequencies
(and hence, the inducing forces and the system frequencies synchronize over the
mentioned wind speeds, it is basically justified to assume a calculated state of
equilibrium which results from the wind power input on the one hand and the energy
dissipated by the system (conductor self damping, damping devices) on the other
hand (energy balance).
The conductor tendency to vibrate and the related frequencies depend on the system
parameters (length of span, conductor cross section, conductor dead weight,
everyday stress, geographical conditions and resulting wind forces.

The following types are subsumed under the generic term „wind-induced
oscillations“:
 Aeolean vibration (High frequeny)

4. Results
The vibration analysis was performed with a program named ATTRA. ATTRA is able
to simulate the dynamic behaviour of conductors and conductor bundles subjected to
wind excitation. The program was developed at the University of Milano under
collaboration of international recognized specialist in conductor vibrations. The main
core of the program was developed by the following scientists:
Giorgio Diana, Alessandra Manenti, Ferruccio Resta, Andrea Zuin.
The program is based on general recommendations of IEEE, CIGRE and researches
from the above mentioned scientists. The program is well known in the overhead
transmission field and the analytical analysis has a well reputation.
The used version of the program was “ver 2.0.0”.

The general requirements according to TES-P-122.04, Rev 01 are:

 The maximum subspan length was set with 60m. The maximum subspan
length from the centre of the support to the first spacer damper was set with
30m.
 The Bending strain limit for Aeolian Vibration was set with 200 microstarins
(peak-peak) for ACSR conductors  ±100 microstrains alternating bending
stress.

4.1 Aeolian Vibration of quad bundle with spacer damper, Ruling span with
300m:

Fig.2 . shows the simulated bending stress of the conductor with a span length of
300m and seven spacer dampers. The tension was set with 22820 N which is the
load at -5°C without wind.
The blue line in the graph indicates the bending stress of the conductor without any
damping system (neither spacer damper nor Stockbridge damper).
The other lines in the graph shows the bending stress on the conductor at different
position as indicated in the right upper corner of the graph.
With spacer dampers the bending strains are maintained below the ±100 µm/m limit.

4.2 Aeolian Vibration of quad bundle with spacer damper, Ruling span with
350m:

Fig.3 . shows the simulated bending stress of the conductor with a span length of
350m and eight spacer dampers. The tension was set with 22820 N which is the load
at -5°C without wind.
The blue line in the graph indicates the bending stress of the conductor without any
damping system (neither spacer damper nor Stockbridge damper).
The other lines in the graph shows the bending stress on the conductor at different
position as indicated in the right upper corner of the graph.
With the maximum allowed bending strain of ±100µm/m (IEEE recommendation), the
system without damping devices exceeds safe limits demonstrating that a suitable
damping system is required. With spacer dampers the bending strains are
maintained below the ±100 µm/m limit.

4.3 Aeolian Vibration of quad bundle with spacer damper, Ruling span with
400m:

Fig.4 . shows the simulated bending stress of the conductor with a span length of
400m and nine spacer dampers.

4.4 Aeolian Vibration of quad bundle with spacer damper, Ruling span with
450m:

Fig.5 . shows the simulated bending stress of the conductor with a span length of
450m and ten spacer dampers.

Conclusion Aeolian vibration: The vibration study shows an efficient

protection against harmful vibrations with spacer dampers. Based on the
results of the damping study no critical vibration can be expected.
The Aeolian vibration limit maintain below the requirements as stated in the
specification 12-TMSS-01, Rev 01.

4.5 Subspan oscillation of quad bundle with spacer damper, Ruling span with
300m:

The results of the simulation are reported in Fig. 6. The tension load of the conductor
was 20280N which is the final tension load at 27°C.
The concerned wind velocity field from 5 up to 18 m/s was investigated and the
outputs of the calculations show sub span activities starting at wind velocity from 9
m/s with peak to peak amplitude of 145 mm. The maximum sub span oscillation of
240 mm is reached at wind velocity range between 11 m/s and 13 m/s. The
phenomenon is exhausted at wind velocities above 13 m/s. Wind velocities higher
than 9 m/s have negligible percentage of presence (6% as per Table 04-3 para. 4.6.5
of SEC Transmission
Engineering Standard TES-P-122.04 Rev. 01). It should be also noted that higher
velocities have even lower percentage of occurrence.

4.6 Subspan oscillation of quad bundle with spacer damper, Ruling span with
350m:

The results of the simulation are reported in Fig. 7.
The maximum sub span oscillation of
335 mm is reached at wind velocity of 13 m/s. The phenomenon is exhausted at wind
velocities above 13 m/s. Wind velocities higher than 9 m/s have negligible
percentage of presence (6% as per Table 04-3 para. 4.6.5 of SEC Transmission
Engineering Standard TES-P-122.04 Rev. 01). It should be also noted that higher
velocities have even lower percentage of occurrence.

4.7 Subspan oscillation of quad bundle with spacer damper, Ruling span with
400m:

The results of the simulation are reported in Fig. 8.
The maximum sub span oscillation of
335 mm is reached at a wind velocity of 13 m/s. The phenomenon is exhausted at
wind velocities above 13 m/s.

Conclusion Subspan oscillation:

The adopted spacer damper distribution (max sub span length 50m) is also
acceptable for controlling sub span oscillations, taking into consideration the
very low percentage of occurrences of wind velocities greater than 9 m/s.

Final conclusion:

The damping system is adequate to control the Aeolian vibration of the bundle and
fulfil the requirements of the specification.

The spacer damper distribution (maximum subspan length of 50m) is acceptable for
controlling the sub span oscillation.

The extremities sub span length (maximum of 30m) provides an adequate bundle
torsional stability.

Note: The damping system can only work efficient if the number of spacer dampers,
as shown in the submitted placement charts, are followed.
The installation distances of the dampers must comply with the placement charts
otherwise the protection against vibrations is not effective.

• INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS OF SPACER DAMPERS

• IN-SPAN POSITIONING TABLE DR-5030_02 Rev. 00 (from 61 to 655 m)

INSTALLATION OF TWIN SPACER DAMPERS IN THE SPANS

The spacer dampers must be installed in a position perpendicular to the axis of the sub-
conductors. Any deviation from this condition, in vertical and horizontal sense, must not
be more than 3°.

WARNING

THE SPACER DAMPERS MUST BE INSTALLED WITHIN 24 HOURS FROM THE STRINGING
OPERATIONS.
INSTALLATION MUST BE MADE USING A BUCKET TRUCK OR BY PLACING PERSONNEL
ON THE CONDUCTORS THROUGH THE USE OF A CONDUCTOR CAR.
FOR A CORRECT AND EASIER INSTALLATION, THE WEIGTH OF LINEMAN, CONDUCTOR
CAR AND EQUIPMENT MUST BE EQUALLY DISTRIBUTED TO ALL SUBCONDUCTORS OF
THE PHASE.
THE LOCATION ALONG THE CONDUCTORS MUST BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE
RECOMMENDED POSITIONING TABLE OF THE PROJECT.
THE CORRECT LOCATION MUST BE DETECTED BY MEANS OF GROUND TARGETS OR
CAR DISTANCE COUNTERS.
THE PROPER INSTALLATION AND TIGHTENING OF THE SPACER DAMPER IS SHOWN ON
THE FOLLOWING PAGE.

ANY SAG ADJUSTMENT BETWEEN THE SUB-CONDUCTORS AFTER INSTALLATION OF

THE SPACER DAMPERS, MUST BE PERFORMED AFTER REMOVAL OF THE SPACER
DAMPERS FROM THE CONCERNED SPAN/SPANS.
INSTALLATION OF QUAD SPACER DAMPERS IN THE SPANS

The spacer dampers must be installed in a position perpendicular to the axis of

subconductors. Any deviation from this condition, in vertical and horizontal sense, must not
be more than 3°.

The clamp nearest to the wording “TOP”, visible on both sides of the central body must
always be installed on the upper bundle sub-conductor.

WARNING

CORRECT CLAMP INSTALLATION

SIMPLE INSTALLATION CAN BE ACHIEVED AS FOLLOWS

Unscrew the clamp bolt until the end of the

bolt is on level with the external edge of the
captive nut, i.e. the full length of the nut
remains on the bolt.

Locate the clamp body

correctly on the conductor.

By hand locate the clamp cap on the

conductor and hold both clamp components
correctly seated on the conductor.

Without loosening that hold, tighten the

bolt by means of a torque wrench, to the
installation torque of 40 Nm ±10%.
IMPORTANT NOTES

DAMP's system of in-span positioning shown in the following tables, has been
computerized. DAMP's computer programme is based on many correlated field
test results, and analytical studies concerning the behaviour of all currently
employed, bundled conductors.

The in-span positionings tabulated are applicable to currently

employed (twin, triple, quad) conductor bundles in spans with standard
dimensions and structural characteristics.

For special conditions, such as, extra long spans, wide river or ravine crossings,
at high ground clearance etc., employing high breaking load conductors at high
tensions, a specific study/control is essential to verify (or modify) the system in
relation to the specific and special conditions.

BASIC CRITERIA AND MEASURING SYSTEM TO BE FOLLOWED TO
CORRECTLY ESTABLISH “DAMP” SPACER DAMPER POSITIONING

All dimension shown in the in-span positioning tables refer to measurements taken
along the actual length of the conductors.
The starting points of measurements (K) are taken as shown in Fig. 1,2 and 3 below.

The maximum variation tolerance permissible on the individual sub-span distances

shown, must be within ± 1 m.

Note 1: The spacer damper shall be located at min. 2 meters away from any mid span
joint, repair sleeve or any other fitting attachment to the conductor.

Note 2: “SPAN LENGTH” means (see figures 1, 2 and 3) the distances between:
• Tension clamp to tension clamp, or
• Tension clamp to mid of suspension clamp, or
• Mid of suspension clamp to mid of suspension clamp

 Aeolean vibration (High frequency)
 Galloping (low frequency)
 Subspan oscillation (low frequency)

5. Results
The vibration analysis was performed with a program named ATTRA. ATTRA is able
to simulate the dynamic behaviour of conductors and conductor bundles subjected to
wind excitation. The program was developed by the University of Milano under
collaboration of international recognized specialists in conductor vibrations. The main
core of the program was developed by the following scientists:
Giorgio Diana, Alessandra Manenti, Ferruccio Resta, Andrea Zuin.
The program is based on general recommendations of IEEE, CIGRE and researches
from the above mentioned scientists. The program is well known in the overhead
transmission field and the analytical analysis has a well reputation.
The used version of the program was “Ver 2.0.0”.

OPGW conductor:

Fig.2 shows the simulated bending strain (0 – peak) of the conductor with a span
length of 100m and two Stockbridge vibration dampers (one damper on each span
extremity). Additional one Stockbridge vibration damper per warning sphere is
installed.
The tension was set with 10980 N, which is the load at -5°C without wind.
The blue line in the graph indicates the bending stress (0 – peak) of the conductor
without any damping system. The other lines in the graph show the bending stress
(0 – peak) on the conductor at different positions as indicated in the right upper
corner of the graph.
With the maximum allowed bending strain of 150 microstrain (acc. TES_P-122.04,
Rev. 01), the system without damping devices exceeds safe limits demonstrating that
a suitable damping system is required.
With two Stockbridge vibration dampers per span, installed up to ≤ 300 m span
length, the line is well protected.

Fig.3 shows the simulated bending strain (0 – peak) of the conductor with a span
length of 560m and four Stockbridge vibration dampers (two dampers on each span
extremity). Additional one Stockbridge vibration damper per warning sphere is
installed.
The tension was set with 10980 N, which is the load at -5°C without wind.

without any damping system. The other lines in the graph show the bending stress

Conclusion:

The vibration study shows an efficient protection against harmful vibrations with
Stockbridge vibration dampers. Based on the results of the damping study no critical
vibrations can be expected.
The damping system can only work efficient if the number of dampers, as shown in
the submitted placement chart, is followed.
The installation distances of the dampers must comply with the placement charts,
otherwise the protection against vibrations is not effective.

Fig.2 shows the simulated bending strain (0 – peak) of the conductor with a span
length of 100m and two Stockbridge vibration dampers (one damper on each span
extremity).

Fig.3 shows the simulated bending strain (0 – peak) of the conductor with a span
length of 560m and four Stockbridge vibration dampers (two dampers on each span
extremity).

Basis for the calculation that the terrain is consicered as open, flat and desert type
with no vegetation.

OPGW conductor:

Fig.2 shows the simulated bending strain (0 – peak) of the conductor with a span
length of 150m and two Stockbridge vibration dampers (one damper on each span
extremity).
The tension was set with 17410 kN, which is the load at -5°C without wind.
The blue line in the graph indicates the bending stress (0 – peak) of the conductor
without any damping system. The other lines in the graph show the bending stress
(0 – peak) on the conductor at different positions as indicated in the right upper
corner of the graph.
With the maximum allowed bending strain of 150 microstrain (equals 5,2 Mpa peak),
acc. TES_P-122.04, Rev. 01, the system without damping devices exceeds safe
limits demonstrating that a suitable damping system is required.
With two Stockbridge vibration dampers per span, installed up to ≤ 150 m span
length, the line is well protected.

Fig.3 shows the simulated bending strain (0 – peak) of the conductor with a span
length of 570m and four Stockbridge vibration dampers (two dampers on each span
extremity).
The tension was set with 17410 N, which is the load at -5°C without wind.
With four Stockbridge vibration dampers per span, installed up to ≤ 570 m span
length, the line is well protected.
