Quarter 2 - Module 3:
Percentage, Rate, and Base

LU_Q2_Mathematics6_Module3
Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners,
can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-
step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each

SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you
need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of
the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check
your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that you
will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, notes to the Teacher are also
provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can
best help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part
of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests. And
read the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the
tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

Thank you.

Target

When you or your parents go to the malls or other business establishments to

buy items or products or to avail of specific services, you immediately look for
discounted items, products or services. During the Christmas season malls and
other business establishments go on sale offering discounts to most of their items
or products and services. Did you try to compute and check if the given discounts
were correct. Did you try to compare which items offer the bigger discount. Is a 15%
discount necessarily bigger than a 10% discount? Remember that we should buy
wisely and buy things that we need and not what we want. In this module, we’ll try
to help you answer these questions by learning about percentage, rate, and base
including how to solve problems involving percentage, rate and base to help us
become wise buyers.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. Find the percentage or rate or percent in a given problem. M6NS-IId-142
2. Solves routine and non-routine problems involving finding the percentage,
rate and base using appropriate strategies and tools. M6NS-IId-143

Learning Objectives/tasks

1. Define percentage, rate and base.

2. Give examples of percent written in fraction form and decimal form.
3. Identify the clue or clue words for percentage, rate and base in a given
problem.
4. Identify the formula for solving percentage, rate or base
5. Solve problems that requires finding the percentage, rate or base.

Pre-test

Read and understand the questions carefully then write your answer on a separate
sheet of paper.

Discover

Study the given set of examples. Observe how the parts of the problems, the
percentage or amount, rate and base were identified.

Hint: Identify first the rate (the easiest), then the base (which represent the total)
and the part which is not the rate or base is the percentage or amount.

Example 1. What is 10% of 60?

Solution: Rate is the ratio of a number to

100. It has the percent “%”
a. What is 10% of 60? symbol or sometimes the word
“percent” beside the number.
Rate
Base represents the total
value/amount. It is preceded by
the word “of”.
b. What is 10% of 60?
Amount/Percentage is the one
that is not a rate or a base. It
Base
represents a part of the base. It is
also accompanied by the word
“is” before or after it.
c. What is 10% of 60?

Percentage / amount

Example 2. 15 is what percent of 20?

Solution:

a. 15 is what percent of 20?

Rate

b. 15 is what percent of 20?

Base

c. 15 is what percent of 20?

Percentage / amount

3 LU_Q2_Mathematics6_Module3
Example 3. 25 percent of what number is 16?
Solution:

a. 25 percent of what number is 16?

Rate

b. 25 percent of what number is 16?

Base

c. 25 percent of what number is 16?

Percentage / amount
Take a look at the following formula. They are used to find the percentage
(amount), rate, and base.

A/P = R x B R = A ÷ B x 100 B=A÷R

where:
A/P is the amount or percentage,
R is the rate and
B is the base
Let us try to solve the three previous examples.

1. What is 10 % of 60?
A/P R B

Solution: Amount/Percentage is missing so we use the formula: A/P = R x B.

A/P = R x B
= 10% x 60

a. A/P = R x B = 0.1 x 60 You can change 10%

= 6.0 to its decimal form.
Note:
➢ To change percent to
𝟏𝟎
b. A/P = R x B = x 60 decimal, always move the
𝟏𝟎𝟎
decimal point 2 places to
𝟏𝟎 the left.
= x 60
𝟏𝟎𝟎
ex. 10% = 10 = 0.10 or 0.1
𝟏 You can also change percent to
= x 6 fraction form.
𝟏
Note:
=6 ➢ Percent to fraction

Percent means per 100

10
10% =
100

4 LU_Q2_Mathematics6_Module3
2. 15 is what percent of 20?
A/P R B

Solution: Rate is missing so we use the formula R = A ÷ B x 100.

R = A ÷ B x 100 = 15 ÷ 20 x 100

a. You can rewrite 15 ÷ 20 x 100 as

𝟏𝟓 𝒙 𝟏𝟎𝟎
𝟐𝟎

𝟏𝟓𝟎𝟎
=
𝟐𝟎

= 75%

b. You can write 15 ÷ 20 as a fraction

𝟏𝟓
= x 100
𝟐𝟎
then apply cancellation.
𝟏𝟓
= x 100
𝟐𝟎
1

𝟏𝟓𝟎
= = 75%
𝟐
3. 25 percent of what number is 16?
R B A/P

Solution: Base is missing so we use the formula B = A ÷ R.

B = A ÷ R = 16 ÷ 25%.
a. B = A ÷ R = 16 ÷ 0.25 Change 25% to its decimal form.

= 0.25 16 Note:
➢ To change percent to its
0.25 16 decimal form, always
x 100 x 100 move the decimal point 2
places to the left.
= 25 1600
ex. 25% = 25 = 0.25
64
= 25 1600 ➢ When having a decimal
150 divisor, change first the
100 divisor into a whole
100 number by multiplying it
0 with 100 or simply move
the decimal point 2
places to the right.
Therefore: 16 ÷ 0.25 = 64
Do the same to the
dividend.

b. B = A ÷ R = 16 ÷ Change the rate (0.25) to fraction
𝟏𝟎𝟎
𝟐𝟓
form .

➢ Put 1 as denominator of
𝟎.𝟐𝟓
0.25 = .
𝟏
➢ Multiply both numerator
and denominator by 100.
𝟎.𝟐𝟓 𝟏𝟎𝟎 𝟎.𝟐𝟓 𝟐𝟓

operation to multiplication.
