PART B: Final Micro-Project Report

TITLE: To study behavior of amorphous and crystalline solid

1.0 Rationale
To Study Matter exists in three states :solid liquid and gases. The molecular arrangement is
responsible for the states .In solids the molecular arrangement is closely packed .The project will
help us to understand the amorphous and crystalline solids.

2.0 Aim of Micro Project

a. To Understand the concept of solid structure.

b. To study the difference between amorphous and crystalline solids on the basis of solubility test.

3.0 Course Outcomes

C102.4 - Apply the catalysis process in industries.

4.0 Literature Review

In a solid, constituent particles (ions, atoms, or molecules) are closely packed together. The
forces between particles are so strong that the particles cannot move freely but can only
vibrate. As a result, a solid has a stable, definite shape, and a definite volume. Solids can only
change their shape by an outside force, as when broken or cut. In crystalline solids, the particles
(atoms, molecules, or ions) are packed in a regularly ordered, repeating pattern. There are
various different crystal structures, and the same substance can have more than one structure
(or solid phase). For example, iron has a body-centred cubic structure at temperatures below
912 °C (1,674 °F), and a face-centred cubic structure between 912 and 1,394 °C (2,541 °F). Ice
has fifteen known crystal structures, or fifteen solid phases, which exist at various temperatures
and pressures. Glasses and other non-crystalline, amorphous solids without long-range order
are not thermal equilibrium ground states; therefore they are described below as nonclassical
states of matter. Solids can be transformed into liquids by melting, and liquids can be
transformed into solids by freezing. Solids can also change directly into gases through the
process of sublimation, and gases can likewise change directly into solids through deposition

5.0 Actual Methodology Followed.

The topic is decided ‘amorphous and crystalline solid’ with the consent of all the group
members, the information about amorphous and crystalline solid will be collected by internet
search and behaviour of amorphous and crystalline solid will be observed by solubility test.

A crystal or crystalline solid is a solid material whose constituents (such as atoms, molecules, or
ions) are arranged in a highly ordered microscopic structure, forming a crystal lattice that
extends in all directions. In addition, macroscopic single crystals are usually identifiable by their
geometrical shape, consisting of flat faces with specific, characteristic orientations. The scientific
study of crystals and crystal formation is known as crystallography. The process of crystal
formation via mechanisms of crystal growth is called crystallization or solidification.

Examples of large crystals include snowflakes, diamonds, and table salt. Most inorganic solids
are not crystals but polycrystals, i.e. many microscopic crystals fused together into a single solid.
Examples of polycrystals include most metals, rocks, ceramics, and ice. A third category of solids
is amorphous solids, where the atoms have no periodic structure whatsoever. Examples of
amorphous solids include glass, wax, and many plastics.
