What is It

Theater is the one major art form that combines all other art forms in a single
creation, from painting and sculpture to installation art, music, dance, literature,
and even computer arts. A story is performed on stage (or another performance
area) by actors who play the characters, bringing them to life and shaping the plot
through dialogues and acts, as well as song and dance.

The stage sets and props, the lighting, the background music and sound effects,
and the costumes and accessories all contribute to the vibrant theater experience.
Computer-generated visual effects and mechanized sets have also been
incorporated in recent decades.

All of these elements are inspired by different art forms and make use of the artistic
skills and techniques you’ve learned over the last three quarters. This fourth
quarter, you will have the opportunity to participate in the dynamic and thrilling
phase of putting on an original presentation with your classmates, which will
incorporate the majority, if not all, of these skills and techniques.

Philippine Theater and Performing Groups

The Philippines has well-talented theater actors and actresses. They are member
of a number of theater companies in the country that produce local and
international plays. The following are some of the local theater companies:

ELEMENTS OF ART AS APPLIED TO AN ORIGINAL PERFORMANCE

A theater output includes a variety of artistic elements. Our perception of them is
shaped in a variety of ways and by various senses. The following are the
fundamental components:

1. THEME
The core concept of the output is the theme. It
can be expressed explicitly through dialogue, body
expressions, and actions, or kinesthetic movements
(dance), songs, or implied after watching the entire
show. It could be about every aspect of life. It may be
about passion, bravery, nationalism, politics, greed,
myths, stories, or one’s search for happiness. The better
the theme, the better the presentation would usually be.

Example: Happiness is nowhere to be found but in one’s

heart”. - “Sandosenang Sapatos”, Luis Gatmaitan https://shop.omflit.com/products/s
andosenang-sapatos-
premium?variant=8667151695923

City of Good Character

6
DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
2. PLOT
The plot is the story line. It is exactly what is going on.

Example:

Susie, a differently abled girl born without feet, is the protagonist of

“Sandoseng Sapatos”. The Shoe Fairy appears in her dreams every year on the
night before her birthday and grants her legs and a pair of shoes, enabling her to
dance at least for a night. Susie requests that the Shoe Fairy send her a pair of feet
to satisfy her father’s dream of seeing her become a ballerina when her shoemaker
father becomes ill. The rest of the story is about her discovery of life.

3. CHARACTERS
The various characters interwoven with the play’s plot are the actors and
actresses. Each character has his or her own personality and is responsible for
bringing the character they are playing to life.
4. SCRIPT OR LIBRETTO
The story of any play is promoted by libretto or script. Through this
important element, the story is narrated, danced, or sang. The play’s success is
heavily dependent on how well the librettist or scriptwriter wrote the dialogue and
on the quality of the actors’ and actresses’ delivery of the same.
5. MUSIC OR SOUND
Natural sounds, music, and dialogue are the three (3) main types of sound
for plays.
 Natural sounds give a scene in a play a feeling of authenticity. The
audience picks up these sounds as they occur. When the scene shows
two performers entering a room, the audience hear voices, a distant
dialogue, then the creaking sound the rickety door makes as they open
it, or perhaps the barking of a dog that one of them is carrying – all
these sounds are natural to bring realism to the play.
 When music is added to a performance, a new dimension occurs – the
music is both real or unreal. It adds to the realism because it affects
our emotions, involving us more deeply. However, it is unreal, because
life episodes or situations, as they happen, are not accompanied by
any music.

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
 Music composers and lyricists collaborate to compose music that will
go with the dialogue of the play. A play’s dialogue impacts better with
the audience if it is accompanied by a suitable piece of music.

What I Have Learned

Activity 5: Answer the following questions.

1. What is your impression of the theater industry in the Philippines?
2. Would you like to attend a stage production of the various theater groups?
What type of play most interests you, and why?
3. How do you feel about Philippine theater performers who have become stars
on both local and international stage?
4. Can you envision yourself being involved in the theater arts in some way?
5. Would you consider a full-time (or part-time) career in this field?

What I Can Do

Activity 6: The World Is A Stage

Materials:
a large shoebox or thick illustration board, clay, cutouts, paint, glue, and
other recyclable materials
Procedures:
1. You can make a simple “stage” out of a small box (shoebox) with a lid.
2. Cut down all the four-corners of the box. Now you will have a flat shape.
3. Leave one short side blank. On the other three sides, paint scenes that you
think are good for the set that you have in mind. Include all the other props
that you need to complete your set.
4. You could glue a prop, such as a tree or a wave, at the center of the base.
place a prop(s) that you think will tickle one’s imagination when seen.
5. Then, paint the inside of the lid with a sky blue color.
6. You will need to cut a peephole in the middle of the unpainted end of the
box. You also need a hole in the lid so that the light can shine into it.
7. Join the sides of the box back together and put the lid on.
