Theater is the one major art form that combines all other art forms in a single
creation, from painting and sculpture to installation art, music, dance, literature,
and even computer arts. A story is performed on stage (or another performance
area) by actors who play the characters, bringing them to life and shaping the plot
through dialogues and acts, as well as song and dance.
The stage sets and props, the lighting, the background music and sound effects,
and the costumes and accessories all contribute to the vibrant theater experience.
Computer-generated visual effects and mechanized sets have also been
incorporated in recent decades.
All of these elements are inspired by different art forms and make use of the artistic
skills and techniques you’ve learned over the last three quarters. This fourth
quarter, you will have the opportunity to participate in the dynamic and thrilling
phase of putting on an original presentation with your classmates, which will
incorporate the majority, if not all, of these skills and techniques.
The Philippines has well-talented theater actors and actresses. They are member
of a number of theater companies in the country that produce local and
international plays. The following are some of the local theater companies:
1. THEME
The core concept of the output is the theme. It
can be expressed explicitly through dialogue, body
expressions, and actions, or kinesthetic movements
(dance), songs, or implied after watching the entire
show. It could be about every aspect of life. It may be
about passion, bravery, nationalism, politics, greed,
myths, stories, or one’s search for happiness. The better
the theme, the better the presentation would usually be.
Example:
3. CHARACTERS
The various characters interwoven with the play’s plot are the actors and
actresses. Each character has his or her own personality and is responsible for
bringing the character they are playing to life.
4. SCRIPT OR LIBRETTO
The story of any play is promoted by libretto or script. Through this
important element, the story is narrated, danced, or sang. The play’s success is
heavily dependent on how well the librettist or scriptwriter wrote the dialogue and
on the quality of the actors’ and actresses’ delivery of the same.
5. MUSIC OR SOUND
Natural sounds, music, and dialogue are the three (3) main types of sound
for plays.
Natural sounds give a scene in a play a feeling of authenticity. The
audience picks up these sounds as they occur. When the scene shows
two performers entering a room, the audience hear voices, a distant
dialogue, then the creaking sound the rickety door makes as they open
it, or perhaps the barking of a dog that one of them is carrying – all
these sounds are natural to bring realism to the play.
When music is added to a performance, a new dimension occurs – the
music is both real or unreal. It adds to the realism because it affects
our emotions, involving us more deeply. However, it is unreal, because
life episodes or situations, as they happen, are not accompanied by
any music.
