CLASS: X

Exp. No: 5 FOCAL LENGTH OF CONVEX LENS

Date:

AIM: (Ruled side)

To determine the focal length of a Convex Lens using distant object method.

APPARATUS REQUIRED: (Ruled side)

Lens holder, convex lens, white screen and meter scale.

THEORY: (Ruled side)

When the ray of light passing parallel to principal axis after refraction from a
convex lens, it converges at a point on the principal focus (F). The distance
between optic centre (O) and focus is focal length (f) of the convex lens.

PROCEDURE: (Ruled side)

1. Place the convex lens in the lens holder. Focus the lens in front of any
distant object in the lab. Place the screen on the other side of the lens.
Move the screen away from the lens to get a clear and a sharp image
on the screen. Fix the screen at that position.
2. Note the position of the lens and the screen. The distance between the
lens and the screen gives the focal length of the convex lens.
3. Repeat the experiment with two different objects.
4. Calculate the average focal length from the five values of focal length.

RESULT: (Ruled side)

The focal length of a given convex lens is __________ cm.

PRECAUTIONS: (Ruled side)

1. Place the table or a platform near an open window through which

sufficient sunlight enters. Fix the convex lens on a stand and place it
on the table near the window.
2. Image of the sun should be focused only on the screen. Image of the
sun should never be seen directly with the naked eye. Sunlight should
never be focused with the convex lens on any part of the body, paper
or any inflammable materials, as it could be dangerous to do so.
3. There should not be any obstacle in the path of the rays of light from
the distant object falling on the convex lens.
4. In order to obtain a sharp and clear image of the distant object on the
ground it must be ensured that the object is well illuminated so that
amount of light incident on the convex lens is sufficient to produce a
well illuminated image.
5. Adjust the positions of the screen and the convex lens such that the
light rays coming from the distant object may fall on the lens without
any obstruction.
