“BOSES”
Onyok, a boy whose voice can only be heard by the violin medium of speaking. The indie
Filipino film “Boses” was directed by Ellen Ongkeko-Marfil and released in 2008. The story
revolves around the unlikely friendship between Onyok, a young boy who has survived domestic
abuse, and Ariel, a reclusive violinist who is dealing with his own traumatic past. Set in a rural
Philippine village, the film beautifully depicts how music becomes a powerful healing force in
the lives of these two individuals.
The film begins with Onyok's tumultuous life, marked by abuse and hardship. However,
his world takes a turn for the better when he stumbles upon Ariel, a talented violinist who has
retreated from society after a tragic incident. Ariel becomes Onyok's mentor, introducing him to
the world of music and the violin. Through this shared passion, the two form an unlikely bond
that helps each other heal and grow. "Boses" is a heartwarming story that illustrates the
transformative power of music and the strength that can be found in human connections.
As Onyok learns to play the violin, he not only discovers a talent but also a means to
express his emotions and cope with his troubled past. The film beautifully portrays the emotional
journeys of both characters as they find solace and redemption through music. "Boses" is a
touching and emotionally resonant film that emphasizes the healing potential of art and the
profound impact of compassion and understanding in the face of adversity.
To answer the questions in test 1: All the actors appointed in the indie film all portrayed
the emotions necessary to unlock this emotional connection with the viewers. The venues in the
film are aptly chosen, with the contrast between the rural, impoverished village and Ariel's
secluded house effectively underlining the characters' disparities and struggles. The use of
lighting creates a stark dichotomy, enhancing the storytelling: warm and inviting scenes with
Ariel versus the cold, harsh lighting in Onyok's abusive household. Music, primarily the violin,
plays a central role, symbolizing the film's core message about the healing power of art and
communication. "Boses" offers compelling insights into the transformative potential of music as
a universal language that transcends barriers, highlighting the significance of empathy and
mentorship in the face of trauma. Ariel, the hero, is an inspiring figure, showcasing kindness and
resilience. While replicating his exact circumstances may be challenging, he encourages viewers
to use their talents to make a positive impact on others. The film delivers valuable life lessons,
emphasizing how art, music, and mentorship can offer solace and healing to those who have
experienced hardship and the importance of empathy and support, particularly for young people
facing adversity. As a reviewer, I would rate "Boses" as a high-quality film, well-crafted,
emotionally resonant, and effectively conveying its message about the healing power of music
and the significance of empathy and mentorship, making it both educational and emotionally
compelling.
To answer the following questions in test 2: The direction in "Boses" by Ellen Ongkeko-
Marfil is undeniably effective in merging different elements of the film to convey its intended
message. Ongkeko-Marfil skillfully weaves together the narrative, character development, and
the overarching themes of music, healing, and empathy. The juxtaposition of the rural village
and Ariel's isolated home, expertly directed, effectively highlights the disparities faced by the
characters, enhancing the audience's understanding of their struggles.
In terms of cinematography, the framing, composition, and camera techniques are utilized
to create a visual and emotional impact in each scene. The contrasting lighting in Ariel's
sanctuary and Onyok's abusive household helps set the tone, further immersing the audience in
the characters' experiences.
The production design is realistic in portraying the change in time and setting, providing a
believable backdrop to the characters' lives. The depiction of the rural village and Ariel's
secluded house, along with the clothing of the characters, enhances the authenticity of the
narrative.
The editing is creative and clear in its arrangement of each scene, effectively dominating
the film's purpose. The seamless transition between past and present events, as well as the
emotional growth of the characters, reinforces the film's message about the healing power of
music and the importance of empathy and mentorship.
Sound and music are integral to the film, emphasizing the prevailing emotions in each
scene. The application of various sound effects and music enhances the audience's connection
with the characters' experiences, underlining the transformative potential of music as a universal
language. The presence of silence in critical moments also adds depth and resonance to the
storytelling.
