Q #3: Read the passage and answer the following questions. /10
Pulleys are simple machines that play a crucial role in various applications. These devices consist of a
wheel with a groove and a rope or cable running along the groove. Pulleys are commonly used to lift or
move heavy loads with less effort.

One type of pulley is the fixed pulley, which is attached to a stationary object. When force is applied to one
end of the rope, the load on the other end is lifted. Although the fixed pulley doesn't provide a mechanical
advantage, it changes the direction of the force, making it more convenient to lift objects.

Another type is the movable pulley, which is attached to the object being moved. As the pulley moves, it
reduces the effort needed to lift the load. Movable pulleys provide a mechanical advantage by distributing
the force over multiple ropes.

A combination of fixed and movable pulleys forms a block and tackle system, which further enhances the
mechanical advantage. This system is commonly used in construction, ship rigging, and other heavy lifting
applications.
