I. Direction: Identify what is being asked to complete the chart about Central
Visayas.

Dialects: The major dialect spoken in Central Visayas is Cebuano (Bisaya).


However, there are also variations of Visayan languages spoken in
the different provinces such as Boholano, Waray-Waray, and
Hiligaynon (Ilonggo) in some areas.

Famous Cuisines: Lechon (Roast Pig): Cebu is famous for its flavorful and crispy
lechon.

Chicharon: Deep-fried pork rinds, a popular snack in the region.

Dried Mangoes: Cebu is known for its sweet and tangy dried
mangoes, which are popular both locally and internationally.

Binignit: A Visayan dessert soup made with various root crops, fruits,
and coconut milk.

Tinolang Manok: A chicken soup cooked with ginger and green


papaya, a staple dish in many Visayan households.

Balbacua: A stew made from beef skin and tendons, usually served
with rice.

Traditions & cultures: Pamulinawen Festival:

​ The Pamulinawen Festival is a celebration held in Laoag City,


Ilocos Norte, typically during the first week of February. It is a
cultural event that honors the city's patron saint, St. William the
Hermit, and showcases the rich heritage of the Ilocano people.
The highlight of the festival is the street dancing competition
where participants clad in vibrant costumes perform traditional
dances accompanied by the beat of indigenous music. The
festival also features a beauty pageant, trade fairs, culinary
competitions, and various cultural presentations that highlight
the talents and creativity of the Ilocano people.

Tan-ok ni Ilocano Festival of Festivals:

​ Tan-ok ni Ilocano Festival of Festivals is an annual event held in


Ilocos Norte that brings together different municipalities and
cities in the province to showcase their unique cultural heritage
and traditions. Each participating locality presents a grand
performance that depicts their history, folklore, and way of life
through music, dance, costumes, and props. It is a colorful and
lively event that celebrates the diversity and unity of the Ilocano
people, as well as promotes tourism and cultural preservation in
the region.

Abel Weaving:

​ Abel weaving is a traditional craft and cultural heritage of the


Ilocano people, particularly in the province of Ilocos Norte. It
involves the intricate weaving of cotton or yarn to produce
colorful and geometric-patterned textiles known as "abel" or
"inaabel." The art of abel weaving has been passed down through
generations and is typically done by skilled artisans, often
women, using wooden handlooms. The finished products include
blankets, clothing, table runners, bags, and other textiles that are
known for their durability and intricate designs. Abel weaving is
not only a source of livelihood for many families in the region but
also a symbol of Ilocano identity and craftsmanship.

Dialects: The predominant dialect spoken in the Cagayan Region is Ilocano,


particularly in Cagayan and some parts of Isabela. However, there are
also other languages and dialects spoken in the region, including
Ibanag, Itawis, Gaddang, and Ivatan (in Batanes).

Tourist Spots: Palaui Island: Known for its pristine beaches, lush landscapes, and
diverse marine life, Palaui Island is a popular destination for
eco-tourism and adventure enthusiasts. It offers opportunities for
hiking, snorkeling, and exploring its unspoiled natural beauty.

Callao Cave: Located in Peñablanca, Cagayan, Callao Cave is famous


for its limestone formations and cathedral-like chambers. It is a
popular destination for spelunking and religious pilgrimages, as it
houses a chapel inside one of its chambers.

Banaue Rice Terraces: Although not directly within the Cagayan


Region, the Banaue Rice Terraces in Ifugao (nearby province) are a
UNESCO World Heritage Site and a popular tourist attraction. These
ancient terraces showcase the ingenuity of the Ifugao people and
offer stunning views of the mountainous landscape.

Famous Cuisines: Pinakbet: A traditional Ilocano dish made with mixed vegetables such
as squash, eggplant, okra, and bitter melon, cooked with bagoong
(fermented shrimp paste) and seasoned with garlic, onions, and
tomatoes.

Pancit Batil Patung: A noodle dish originating from Tuguegarao City,


it consists of miki noodles topped with ground pork, carabao meat,
chicharon (crispy pork rinds), and a fried egg, served with a side of
broth.

Dinakdakan: A popular dish in Ilocos Norte and parts of Cagayan,


dinakdakan is made from grilled pork parts (such as ears, face, and
tongue) mixed with onions, chili peppers, calamansi juice, and pig's
brain.

Binallay: A sweet rice cake made from glutinous rice flour, coconut
milk, and sugar, wrapped in banana leaves and steamed. Binallay is a
popular delicacy in the Cagayan Region, especially during festivals
and special occasions.

​ The Afi Festival is a unique cultural tradition celebrated by the


Isnag people in the municipality of Tumauini, Isabela, which is
part of the Cagayan Region. The festival is held annually to
commemorate the town's patron saint, St. Matthias the Apostle,
and to give thanks for a bountiful harvest. One of the main
highlights of the Afi Festival is the "Punnuk" ritual, where locals
gather at the town plaza to witness the ceremonial slaughtering
of a carabao (water buffalo). The meat of the carabao is then
distributed among the community members as a symbol of unity
and abundance. The festival also features street parades, cultural
performances, traditional games, and religious processions,
providing a colorful and festive atmosphere that reflects the
vibrant culture of the Isnag people.

Bangus Festival:

​ The Bangus Festival is an annual event held in Dagupan City,


Pangasinan, which is also part of the Cagayan Region. The
festival celebrates the city's thriving aquaculture industry and
honors the humble bangus (milkfish), which is considered the
"silver backbone" of Dagupan's economy. During the Bangus
Festival, the city comes alive with various activities and events,
including a grand street parade featuring colorful floats adorned
with giant bangus replicas. Locals and visitors alike can enjoy a
wide array of bangus-inspired dishes showcased in food festivals
and cooking competitions. The festival also includes cultural
presentations, trade fairs, and exhibitions highlighting the cultural
heritage and culinary traditions of the region. The Bangus
Festival not only promotes tourism but also fosters pride in the
city's cultural identity and economic prosperity.
