Corporate Social Responsibilities of ACI

Social responsibility is the awareness that business activities have an impact on society and the
consideration of that impact by firms in decision making. Every Individual has to perform social
responsibility to maintain a balance between the economy and the ecosystems. Corporate
Social Responsibility (CSR) means business practices involving initiatives that benefit society.
Business organization produce goods and services to generate profit. At the same time, it does
have some impact on the society as well as the whole community. Social responsibility is a must
for a business organization. If business firms fail to discharge the responsibility then they will fail
to create goodwill and last long.

I have visited Advanced Chemical Industries (ACI) Limited with three of my group members. ACI
is located in Tejgaon Industrial Area. The company operates its activities through two buildings.
ACI Consumer brand is located in Nina Kabbo, the other concerns are operated through ACI
Centre.

Advanced Chemical Industries (ACI) Limited is one of the leading conglomerates which was
established in 24th of January 1973 in Bangladesh. It has been recognized as the practitioner
and promoter of socially responsible business behavior. Business is a part of social system. It
cannot exist without social support. Different social groups are Investors, Customers,
Employees, Environment, Government, Community, and Nation.

 Business Activities:
ACI Limited is committed to providing customers with a broad range of quality products from its
business operations. It has diversified its business in various sectors such as the health care
division, consumers’ brands division, and agribusiness division. Other than its 3 major strategic
business units, it has 11 subsidiaries, 3 joint ventures and 1 associate.

Responsibilities to Customers:
ACI is committed to keep all its customers, shareholders and suppliers regularly informed about
the compact and the company’s initiatives to uphold the principles. They consider their
customers as essence and provide high qualities of goods at fair prices to the customers. They
ensure the availability of their goods. ACI conducts many research and developmental work so
that they can fulfill their customer demand and can satisfy their customers. They always give
attention to customer’s welfare. One of their missions is to achieve business excellence through
quality by understanding, accepting, meeting and exceeding customer expectations.

Responsibilities to Employees:
ACI consider its workforce the most valuable asset to the organization. ACI Limited is committed
to provide a friendly, flexible and favorable working environment in which the rights and dignity
of all its members are respected and which is free from discrimination, prejudice, intimidation
and all forms of harassment. All of their training, appraisal and benefit packages are to maintain
a happy, productive and successful workforce. ACI is an equal opportunity employer and it
follows the principle of diversity in recruitment, training and giving opportunity to its employees
for career progression and growth. They are continuously identifying their employee needs and
performance and according to them developing plans to improve the efficiency of their

Responsibilities to the Environment:

ACI always support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges and they try to
protect environment from pollution. They are committed to maintain the harmonious balance of
ecosystem and that’s why they constantly seeks ways to manufacture and produce products in
an eco-friendly manner so that the balance of nature remains undisturbed and the environment
remains sustainable. ACI complies local and national environmental regulations. ACI conserve

 natural resources like water and energy for sustainable development and adopt environmentally
safe processes. They ensure appropriate treatment of all effluents prior to discharge, to prevent
pollution or degradation of environment. ACI also Ensure appropriate communication and
cooperate with internal and external interested parties on environmental issues. They create
awareness on environmental issues among employees and adopt modern waste management
technology and they also encourage the diffusion of environmentally friendly technology.

Responsibilities to Investors:
ACI follows fair return policies and conduct the business profitable. They always try to expand
their business. One of the example is SHOPNO, which is a sister concern company of ACI.
They ensure the best use of resources.

There are some other advance social responsibilities that ACI perform and they are -

Responsibilities to the Government:

ACI maintain the rules and regulations of the country. They pay their taxes and they also ensure
social and state security. ACI provides relevant information to the government. ACI works
against all forms of corruption including extortion and bribery.

Responsibilities to the Nation:

ACI Reduces wastes of natural resources and maintains national integrity. They donate to the
natural calamity and also increases national wealth.

Responsibilities to the Community:

ACI creates employment opportunity and conduct resources and development work in order to
increase and quantity of goods. They increases productivity of their workforce and eliminate
social injustice.

Societal Development through Educational Programs:

Social responsibility is the guiding principle for the employees of ACI. It is their top priority.
When they adopted the principles of the Global Compact, they were started giving more focus
on social responsibilities. Their main contribution to societal development are Continued
Medical Education (CME) for medical professionals and Children's Education Programs.

 programs which is known as 'Clinical Meetings' all across Bangladesh. ACI sponsored the whole
program and gave all types of services and technical support to the presenter. Support from
MSD include research support, literature and multimedia presentation for the program, updates
on new technology and thoughts in medical fields and educational support to any participant in
their area of interest. ACI also give support to learn English Language to school going children.
They arranged a program in Faridpur which is named as English Education program.

Outcomes:
The CME program has been proven highly effective for those doctors who are not living in the
cities of Bangladesh. Because in the rural areas, the doctors cannot get enough internet access
or cannot reach any other sources of information. In order to keep them updated on the
developments in the medical practices regularly, the CME program play a vital role,. ACI
believes that they are creating the future leaders by promoting education of children

Educating the farmers with a focus on Environment Friendly Practices:

ACI arranged many programs for educate the farmers all over rural Bangladesh in Good
Agricultural Practices. They have a team who are expert on working at the field and give
technical training to the farmers. Farmers can learn about how to protect crops, how to use new
technologies of cultivation etc. ACI also has similar education programs for animal and poultry
farmers. They arrange farmers' group meeting for sharing of learning and experience. The
experts teach them how to identify problems and give advices to individual farmers.

Outcomes:
Because of that programs farmers are more aware of improving their agricultural output through
application of new technology. Most importantly, making the farmers aware of ways to protect
the environment from hazardous uses of chemicals on their farms, allowing them the
opportunity for informed decision-making. Most of the farmers are illiterate. So by educating the
farmers, ACI provides significant benefits to the farmers. ACI believe that by promoting greater
environmental responsibility among farmers in Bangladesh, they can play the leading role in
market.
