Case A

The water demand of a town is 2160 m3/day. The water demand is to be met from the river flowing
under gravity to the reservoir. The water is supplied to the consumers from the reservoir by continuous
system. Calculate the capacity of balancing reservoir for the consumption pattern as shown in table. (S-
D=C-C)
Consumption pattern for case A
Hours Water consumption in %
5.00-7.00 25
7.00-12.00 30
12.00-17.00 15
17.00-19.00 20
19.00-5.00 10 1
Solution:
Inflow to the reservoir =2160 m3/day =25 lps. =2160/24= 90 m3/day
Demand to be supplied from the reservoir = 2160 m3/day

Time period Hours Water Supply m3 Demand Surplus Deficit

From To consumption m3 m3 m3
%
5.00 7.00 2 25 180 540 - 360
7.00 12.00 5 30 450 648 - 198
12.00 17.00 5 15 450 324 126 -
17.00 19.00 2 20 180 432 - 252
19.00 5.00 10 10 900 216 684 -
Total 24 100 2160 2160 810 810
Therefore the capacity of reservoir =684 m3

Case B

The water demand of a town is 2160 m3/day. The water demand is to be met from the river flowing
under gravity to the reservoir. The water is supplied to the consumers from the reservoir by intermittent
system supplying water from 5.00-7.00 hours in the morning and 16.00-18.00 hours in the evening.
Calculate the capacity of balancing reservoir (S-D=C-I)

Solution:

Inflow to the reservoir =2160 m3/day =25 lps. =2160/24= 90 m3/day

Demand to be supplied from the reservoir = 2160 m3/day
Recommended supply hours and period is as follows
First shift: 5.00 to 7.00 Hours
Second shift: 16.00 to 18.00 hours
Time period Hours Supply Demand Surplus Deficit
From To In Out m3 m3 m3 m3
5.00 7.00 2 2 180 1080 - 900

18.00 5.00 11 - 990 - 990 -
Total 24 4 2160 2160 1800 1800
Therefore the capacity of reservoir = 990 m3
Case C

The water demand of a town is 2160 m 3/day. The water demand is to be met through pumping from
tubewell. The tentative pumping hour is from4.00 to 10.00 hours in the morning and 16.00 to 22.00 in
the evening. The water is supplied to the consumers from the reservoir by continuous system. Calculate
the capacity of balancing reservoir (S-D=I-C)

Inflow to reservoir =2160/12=180 m3/hr

Demand to be supplied from reservoir =2160 m3/day

Time period Hour Water Supply Demand Surplus Deficit

From To In Out consumption m3 m3 m3 m3

19.00 5.00 4 10 10 720 216 504 -
Total 12 24 100 2160 2160 504 504
Therefore the capacity of reservoir = 504 m3

Case D

The water demand of a town is 2160 m 3/day. The water demand is to be met through pumping from
tubewell. The tentative pumping hour is from4.00 to 10.00 hours in the morning and 16.00 to 22.00 in
the evening. The water is supplied to the consumers from the reservoir by intermittent supply system
supplying water from 5.00-7.00 hours in the morning and 16.00-18.00 hours in the evening. Calculate
the capacity of balancing reservoir (S-D=I-I)

Solution:

Inflow to reservoir =2160/12=180 m3/hr

Demand to be supplied from reservoir =2160 m3/day

Recommended supply hours and period is as follows

First shift: 5.00 to 7.00 Hours
Second shift: 16.00 to 18.00 hours

Time period Hours Supply Demand Surplus Deficit

From To In Out m3 m3 m3 m3

18.00 5.00 5 - 900 - 900 -
Total 12 4 2160 2160 1440 1440

Therefore the capacity of reservoir = 900 m3
