1. (20 pts)
(8) a) Calculate the mass of K2CrO4 needed to make 3.0 L of a 0.02 M solution.

3𝑥10−6 𝑚𝑜𝑙 𝐶𝑂 µ𝑔 𝐶𝑂
(6) b) = ……………… (MWCO = 28 g/mol)
10 𝐿 𝑚3
5 𝑚𝑔 𝑐ℎ𝑙𝑜𝑟𝑜𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑚 𝑔 𝑐ℎ𝑙𝑜𝑟𝑜𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑚
(6) c) = …………….. (Density of soil = 2 g/cm3)
1 𝑘𝑔 𝑠𝑜𝑖𝑙 𝑚3 soil

2. (20 pts) The solubility of Ag2CrO4 in water is 1.31 x 10-4 moles/L. Calculate the value of Ksp.
Write the ionization reaction of Ag2CrO4 (Ag: 107.9 g/mol, Cr: 52 g/mol, O: 16 g/mol)

-1.31 x 10-4 moles/L -----------> + 2.62 x 10-4 moles/L + 1.31 x 10-4moles/L.

Ag2CrO4 (s) 2Ag+(aq) + CrO42-(aq)
The Ksp expression is: Ksp = [Ag+]2 [CrO42-]
Plugging in the concentrations directly we get:
Ksp = (2.62 x 10-4)2 (1.31 x 10-4)
Ksp = 8.99 x 10-12
3. (20 pts) A solution contains 24 mg/L MgCO3 and 20 mg/L CaCO3. Calculate the total hardness as mg/L
CaCO3. Show your calculations. (Mg: 24.3 g/mol, Ca: 40 g/mol, C: 12 g/mol, O: 16 g/mol)

4. (20 pts) What volume of 0.250 M NaNO3 solution needs to be evaporated in order to produce
68.0 grams of solid NaNO3 residue? (Na: 23 g/mol, O: 16 g/mol, N: 14 g/mol)

5. (20 pts) The molar absorptivity based on chromium concentration is measured at λmax = 540 nm using a
photometer. For the calibration of the equipment, an experiment was conducted and calibration
equation was found as 𝑨𝒃𝒔𝒐𝒓𝒃𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 = 𝟎. 𝟎𝟎𝟖𝟑 × 𝑪𝒓(𝑽𝑰)(𝝁𝒈). A water sample was then diluted as
1/10 and 100 mL amount of this sample was analyzed and the absorbance value was recorded as 0.21
Calculate the Cr (VI) concentration as mg/L based on the calibration equation.

0.21 = 0.0083 x Cr(VI)

Cr(VI) = 25.30 µg 25.3 x 10 (dilution) = 253 µg / 100 mL
2530 µg /L = 2.53 mg/L
