Let’s take a look at the consonant assimilation that
happens with the respective ‘받침’!(I didn’t cover ‘ㅁ’,
‘ㅇ’, ‘ㅋ’, ‘ㅌ’, ‘ㅍ’ because consonant assimilation rarely
happens when they are 받침.)

1. ㄱ받침
When ‘ㄱ받침’ is followed by either ‘ㄴ’, ‘ㄹ’ or ‘ㅁ’
consonant they are assimilated and ‘ㄱ받침’ changes to
‘ㅇ받침’, and initial consonant remains.

2. ㄴ받침
When ‘ㄴ받침’ is followed by ‘ㄹ’ consonant it produces
‘ㄹ받침’, and ‘ㄹ’ initial consonant stays the same.

When ‘ㄴ받침’ is followed by ‘ㅎ’ consonant, ‘ㄴ’ and ‘ㅎ’

are assimilated and produce ‘ㄴ’ sound.

3. ㄷ받침
When ‘ㄷ받침’ is followed by ‘ㄴ’ consonant they are
assimilated and ‘ㄷ받침’ changes to ‘ㄴ받침’, and ‘ㄴ’
consonant stays the same.

4. ㄹ받침
When ‘ㄹ받침’ is followed by ‘ㄴ’ consonant, ‘ㄹ받침’
stays the same and ‘ㄴ’ consonant changes to ‘ㄹ’.

★ When there are two ‘ㄹ’ in a row, one as ‘받침’, and
one as initial consonant, initial consonant has more of ‘L’
sound. So ‘[할라산]’ is read as more of [hal-la-san] instead
of [hal-ra-san].

5. ㅂ받침
When ‘ㅂ받침’ is followed by ‘ㄴ’ or ‘ㅁ’, they are
assimilated and change ‘ㅂ받침’ to ‘ㅁ받침’, and initial
consonant stays the same.

When ‘ ㅂ 받침 ’ is followed by ‘ ㅎ’ consonant, they
produce ‘ㅍ’ sound.

6. ㅅ받침
When ‘ㅅ받침’ is followed by ‘ㄴ’ or ‘ㅁ’ initial consonant
‘ㅅ받침’ changes to ‘ㄴ받침’, and initial consonant stays
the same.

Good Job Korean 6

When ‘ㅅ받침’ is followed by ‘ㅎ’ consonant they are
assimilated and produce ‘ㅌ’ sound.

7. ㅈ/ㅊ받침
When ‘ ㅈ 받 침 ’ and ‘ ㅊ 받 침 ’ are followed by ‘ ㄴ ’
consonant they change to ‘ ㄴ 받 침 ’, and ‘ ㄴ ’ initial
consonant stays the same.

Consonant assimilation is just a rule that helps you to
pronounce words more comfortably.

So you don't have to memorize everything, but it's more

important to understand what's happening inside the
words and why it's pronounced that way.

And of course once you get used to it, it will just come
natural to you. I promise you that!
