Interesting facts
1. Five big-screen films based on books by E.M. Forster were nominated for 29 Oscars, including three for
Best Picture, and they won a total of eight.
2. Forster failed to win the Nobel for Literature though he was nominated 13 times.
3. TIME magazine included A Passage to India in its list of All-Time 100 Novels.
4. During the First World War, Forster worked as a medical orderly in Alexandria in Egypt. He refused to
fight as a soldier because of his pacifist ideals.
5. Forster inherited £8000 from his great-aunt when he was still a young boy. This fortune enabled him to
write without needing another form of income as an adult.
6.Forster was offered a knighthood in the 1940s but declined it.
7. Forster spent a great deal of time in his 20s unsure what to do with his life. His wealth meant he did not
have any need to pursue a particular occupation to get by.
8. Despite Forster keeping his sexuality quiet, he donated a significant sum to the Homosexual Law
Reform Society in the 1960s.
