Redevelopment agencies are on the chopping block, as well as numerous safety net programs that thousands of Californians rely upon for medical help, aging services and other needs. The head of the California Chamber of Commerce, a group of mostly Republican business leaders, expressed cautious support for the tax extensions in the Governors plan. President Obama Could be Your Schools Commencement Speaker


Deadline now extended to March 11!
Applications are open for the 2011 Race to the Top Commencement Challenge! The Commencement Challenge invites public high schools across the country to demonstrate how their school best prepares them for college and a career. Applications must be submitted by Friday, March 11 at 11:59 pm EST. The winning school will host President Obama as their 2011 commencement speaker. Click here for more information

A captivating community arts day providing a range of ways for youth and families to experience the arts in action. Activities include an origami workshop with Margo Wecksler, a performance by the Albany High jazz combo, a presentation by Albany childrens book author Elisa Kleven, a puppet show by Fratello Marionettes. Visual art by Albany youth and local artist Irfan Akbar will be on display in the library and community center lobby. DUE March 31: The U.S. Department of


Labor recently announced a solicitation for grant applications for the national Career Pathways Innovation Fund Grant Program. Over the next year, the department will award approximately $122 million through this program, including $65 million for health care-focused projects, and intends to fund 40 to 50 grants ranging from $1 million to $5 million each. These grants which are replacing the former CommunityBased Job Training grants will focus on career pathway programs that help individuals of varying skill levels enter and pursue rewarding careers in emerging industries and in-demand occupations. DUE April 12: The U.S. Department of


Labor (DOL), Employment and Training Administration (ETA), announces the availability of approximately $17 million in grant funds authorized by the Workforce Investment Act for two grants to serve juvenile offenders, ages 16 to 24, in high-poverty, high-crime communities. The purpose of these grants is to improve the long-term labor market prospects of these youth. Click here for more information.
