1
- In a closed electric circuit, the number of electrons that pass a given point is known to be 20 billion billion
electronstsecond. Find the corresponding current in Amperes.
2. A negative point charge 01 of magnitude 2 x 10·12 C is placed in a vacuous medium.
(a) Find the value of the electric field at a point 1 m from the charge.
(b) Compute the work done I bringing an electron from a point very far to a point o.sm away.
(c) What force is acting on the electron in part (b)?

3. Two flat parallel plates measuring 0.1 m by 0.2m are charged by transferring 1o-e c from one plate to the other.
The plates are separated by 2 cm and oil is placed between them. The relative permittivity of oil is 2.
(a) Find the electric flux density between the plates.
(b) Determine the value of electric field intensity.
(c) Compute the potential difference between the plates.
(d) What is the capacitance of the parallel plates?

4 . An electric heater draws 1000W from a 250V source. What power docs it take from a 208V source? What Is the
value of the resistance of the heater?

5. A resistor dissipates 27 .8 KWh of energy in 30 minutes while drawing a current of 10A. Obtain the value of its
resistance from the energy approach. Determine the resistance from the circuit approach.

6. A 100 resistor has a voltage rating of 120V. What is Its power rating?

7. A coil of standard copper having a resistance of 120 at 25°C is imbedded In the core of a large transformer.

After the transformer has been In operation for several hours the resistance of the coll is found to be 13.40.

What is the temperature of the transformer core? K for copper= 234.5.


8. Find the resistance of a standard copper bar Sm long and 1cm x 7.5cm in cross-section at 20°c. pforcopper at

200C = 1.724 x 10"" O-m.

9. If the copper bar of 08 is drawn into a sheet of thickness 0.5mm and width 1m, what will be its resistance at
20°c?
10. An inductor consists of a 100 turn coil wound on a circular iron ring having a mean length of 20 cm and
cross-sectional area of 0.01 sq.m. The value of permeability of iron is 10·3 _ Find the inductance of the coil. How
much energy is stored in the magnetic field when a current of 0.1A flows in the coil? Find the relative
permeability of the iron core.
11 . Find the capacitance of a circuit element in which
(a) a voltage of 100V yields an energy storage of 0.05J In an electric field.
(b) a voltage increases linearly from Oto 100V In 0.2 scausing a current flow of 5 mA
(c) Two flat parallel plates are separated by 0.1 mm layer of mica and have a total area of 0.113 sq.m. Assume
mica to have a relative permittivity of 10.
12. A voltage having a time variation shown In the figure below Is applied to a pure Inductor having a value of 2H.
Sketch the variation of current through the inductor for the first 1Os. Repeat the problem if the Inductor is

replaced by (a) a 1F capacitor & (b) a 0.50 resistor.

1. Find the average values, rms values and the form factors of the waveforms shown in Fig.1.
2. An ac voltage source v(t) • 10Cos(314t+nl3) is applied to (a) a 5.0resistor, (b) a 0.1H inductor and (c) a 10µ=
capacitor. In each case determine the time expression for the instantaneous current, the corresponding
effective value and the value of the Impedance.
3. A voltage source e(t) = 141Sin314t is applied to two parallel branches. The currents drawn by the two branches
are l,(t) = 7.07Sin(td- nl3) & flt)= 10Sin(td+nl6). Compute the instantaneous current and rms value of current
and the power of the source. Also, calculate the apparent power and power factor of the circuit.
4. A circuit is composed of a 9.0resistance and a series-connected inductive reactance of 1211 When a voltage
e(t) is applied to this circuit the resulting current is i(t) • 28.3Sln314t. What is the value of the complex
impedance? Determine the time expression for the applied voltage. Find the value of the inductance in Henrys.
5. A voltage e(t) = 150Sln1000t is applied to a series RLC circuit where R-401}. L=0.13H & C= 10µ=. Compute
the rms value· of the steady-state current. Find the expression for the instantaneous voltage appearing across
the Inductor terminals. Also determine the real and reactive power supplied by the source, the reactive power of
the capacitor and the Inductor as well as the power factor of the circuit.
6. In a series RC circuit to which is applied a voltage 170Sintd it is found that a steady state current flows which
leads the voltage by 3(1'. Find the effective voltage drops across the resistive and reactive elements.

7. An effective voltage of 100L<J> is applied to a parallel combination of two impedances Z,=R ,+JX1 and Z 2=R2+JX2•

Assuming that R ,=3fl and R 2=4fl and that the magnitudes of the two branch currents are the same, determine

the values of x,, X 2 and the resultant source current.


8. In the network configuration shown in Fig.8 find the current which flows through the z, branch using nodal
analysis. Repeat using Thevenln's equivalent circuit.
9. The inductive reactance in series with Z in the circuit of Fig.9 has a value of 25a A voltmeter placed across Z
registers a reading of 179V when a current of 4A flows through z. The power dissipated in the circuit is known
to be 320W. Find the p.f. of the circuit as well as the circuit resistance and the reactive component of Z. Is it
possible for the magnitude of the voltage across Z to be greater than the source voltage? Assume Z contains
an inductive reactance. Explain.
10. A series RLC circuit has the following parameter values: R=10fl. L=0.01H, C=100µ=. Compute the resonant
frequency in radls, the quality factor, bandwidth, lower and upper frequency points of the bandwidth of the
circuit. If a signal e(t) = Sin1000t is applied to this series RLC circuit, calculate the maximum value of the
voltage appearing across the capacitor terminals.
11. A 220V, three-phase voltage is applied to a balanced delta-connected three-phase load as shown in Fig.11 .

Therms value of the phase current measured between points a & bis I.,,• 10L-3<fJ. Find the magnitude and
phase of the line current / . Draw the phasor diagram showing clearty the line voltages, phase currents and line
currents. Compute the total power received by the three-phase load. Find the value of the resistive portion of
the phase impedance.
12. A 3-,p, 208V generator supplies a total of 1800W at a line current of 10A when three identical impedances are
arranged in a Y-connectlon across the line terminals of a generator. Compute the resistive and reactive
components of each of the phase impedances.

3. An Ideal transformer has a tums ratio of100/300. The LV winding Id connected to a source of 3.3

kV, 50 Hz. An Impedance of (100+j35)O Is connected across the secondary terminals. Calculate

(a) the value of maximum core !llux, (b) the primary & secondary currents, (c) the real and reactive
power supplied to the transformer primary and (d) the value of the Impedance which when
connected direc11y across the source would draw the same real and reactive power as In part (c).
4. A 1-phase transformer Is rated 600/200 V, 25 KVA, 50 Hz.
(a) Calculate the magnitude of the primary and the secondary current when the transformer ls
fully loaded.
(b) What should be the Impedance of the load In Ohms to fully load the transformer when
connected on (I) 600 V side & (II) 200 V side. Asaume no-load current to be zero.
(c) What would be the value of maximum core flux when the transformer Is excited at rated
voltage on either side, given N, • 60 turns.
(d) If the transformer Is operated from 60 Hz. source what would be Its voltage rating for the
maximum flux to remain the same as In part (c).
5. A 50 KVA, 1100/220 V, 50 Hz transformer has HV winding resistance of 0 .125 O and a leakage

reectence of 0 .625 0 . The LV winding has corresponding values of 0 .005 O and 0 .025 O

respectively. Find the equivalent impedance of the transformer referred to HV & LV sides. Find
the HV terminal voltage If the transformer Is to give rated output at (i) 0.8 pf lagging & (II) 0 .8 pf
leading. If the core loss of the transfooner is 580 W find its efficiency at full load, 0.8 pf lagging
and 75% of full load, 0.8 pf tagging. If the transfofmer Is fed on the HV side at 1100 V, find the
secondary termtnal voltage for a full toad on aec:onclary side at 0 .8 pf lagging and 0.8 pf leading.
8. A 25 KVA, 800/200 v transformer 11 subjected to an SC test. The voltage apptled on one side,
with the other shorted Is 5.2% of the rated voltage. The transformer draws rated current and a
power of 242W during the test.
(a) Compute the equivalent resistance and leakage reactance of the transformer In ohms on
either side.
(b) Compute the core flux as a % of the core flux at rated voltage.
(c) From (b) justify that all the 242 W constitute ohmic losses.

7. The transformer of Q.6 is fed from a 600 V source with a load Impedance z.. • (1 .48+)1 .04) a
connected across the secondary. Find the oorrents In both windings (I) considering the
transformer to be Ideal and (II) by taklng the transformer Impedance Into account. Calculate the
voltage regulation of the transformer. If the transfonner draws a powef' of 195 W when supplied
from a 600 V source with the eecondary open compute the efficiency of the transformer when the
load Impedance z.. Is connected across the seoondary.
