Hello my lovelies!

I know that it isn’t sunflower season for most of you but I drew a sketch of a sunflower when I
was thinking of ideas for this month’s illustration club and I just think they’re so lovely and
happy so I wanted to share a simple tutorial for how to draw them.

🥰🌻🌈
They always brighten up an illustration and are joyful just on their own so I think I’ll post this
cutie to Instagram to brighten up my feed

How To Draw A Happy Sunflower
1. We can start our sunflower with a big, simple circle in the middle of the drawing
space.
2. Next we’ll add petals all the way around the outside of the circle. To make them fairly
even, I like to start with just four petals evenly spaced, with one at 12 o’clock, 3
o’clock, 6 o’clock and 9 o’clock.
3. Now we’ll do the same but with four new petals evenly spaced in between the first
set.
4. Then we can fill in the remaining space with the rest of the petals. I find that drawing
the petals this way just makes it easier for me to space them out neatly.
5. Now we can add the sunflower stem by drawing two vertical lines quite close
together from the bottom petal to the bottom of the page.
6. Next, we’ll draw two large leaves coming from the stem and reaching out at an angle.
Sunflower leaves are quite big and have a bit of a point to the end of them.
7. For details I add a line down the middle of each leaf, and (very importantly) draw a
happy little face in the middle of the circle.
8. Lastly I add some more leaf details to each of the leaves, branching out from the
centre line we drew in the previous step.
9. And it’s finished - we now have a cute and happy sunflower!

How To Draw Your Sunflower In Colour
1. To draw the same shape but in colour, we’ll be using the outline that we just drew as
a reference. If you’re drawing digitally, reduce the opacity of the outline layer to about
20% (I also like to make mine ‘multiply’ blend mode to make it easier to see through
it).
2. Using the outline as a reference, colour in all of the shapes on new layers below (or if
you’re painting/drawing with traditional media you could just paint on top of the
sketch).
3. Once we’ve coloured everything in, we can hide the outline reference layer because
we don’t need to use it anymore. This is what my colour version looks like at this
point.
4. Now we can add some fun details! I like to add sparkles, some rosy cheeks, lines for
the petals, some spots on the sunflower head and I also redraw the line details on
the leaves.
5. Then we can give each section a bit of texture using a texture brush (I’ve done this
using the ‘texture fill’ and ‘texture medium’ brushes from my brush pack). While I’m
adding texture I also make some areas a bit darker to double-up as shading, like the
middle of the leaves.
6. Lastly I add some darker areas of shading (with my texture brushes again), like
around the sunflower head, on the stem and on the leaves. And that’s it!

I love drawing happy flowers and I hope you enjoy drawing this cutie as much as I did! 🌻
