-The conflict surrounding the story seems to be the challenge of providing medical care
and aid amidst the war and the lack of resources, as well as the moral dilemma Sonja
faces when asked to care for a young girl.
-The deal made by Sonja and Akhmed is that Sonja agrees to take care of the young
girl, Havaa, while Akhmed works at the hospital until a home is found for the girl.
4. What change in attitude was evident in the main character of the story at the
beginning and at the end?
-At the beginning of the story, Sonja is focused on her work and seems to distance
herself emotionally, but in the end, she had a change in attitude as she becomes more
compassionate and willing to take on the responsibility of caring for Havaa.
5. Why was it important for the writer to narrate the events that happened during the

-It was important for the writer to narrate the events that happened during the war to
reveal some traditions in Chechnya in order to provide the background on the
challenges faced by the characters in the story.
