INDICATION OF MATERIAL SYMBOLS FOR RESIN
A 3035 - 09
AND RUBBER PARTS
C REV5

1. SCOPE
This standard specifies the indication method of material symbols and the indication methods on
drawings for resin and rubber parts.
The material symbols shall surely be indicated not only on parts but also on drawings for the
parts capable of drawing indication.

2. APPLICABLE PARTS
Indications of material symbols and indications on drawings shall be applied, if at all possible
(*1), to all resin and rubber parts. If the indication of material symbols is not possible because of
the shape, functions, or appearance of the parts, it shall be decided upon agreement among the
Design Department, Regulatory Information Coordination Department, and Certification and
Regulation Compliance Division.
Note (*1) "If at all possible" means that the indication of material symbols and drawing
indication can be made on any types of drawings based on the specifications in Section 3. The
indication for parts without a drawing shall, however, conform to Section 7.
Remarks:
1. If there is any specification in the laws and regulations for selecting applicable parts, follow
that specification. As an example for weight, the parts containing 100 g or more resin or 200 g or
more rubber shall have indications on them.
2. The weight, in this context, refers only to that of the applicable materials contained in each
part.

3. INDICATION METHOD
3.1 Construction of Material Symbol
The material symbol will, as a rule, consist of a Honda mark and a material identification
symbol.

> Material Identification Symbol < or > Material Identification Symbol <

Remarks:
1. Expression of "Honda" shall conform to "Honda MARK 2" that is specified in HES Z 0017
(Honda MARKS).
2. Refer to Section 4 for the Material Identification Symbol.

Hisashi Yoneda 518126 08.08.2012 08:08 AM A303509 2

3. Place the symbols ">, <" before and after the Material Identification Symbol as identification
marks.
4. When using Honda marks, the Isolation (protected area) Regulations in the Honda Brand
Identity Guideline shall be abided, and a sufficient space around the Honda mark shall be
provided as shown in Fig. 1. If it is not possible to ensure the isolation area, that area may be
reduced in size. In this case, however, the size of the Honda mark and the material identification
symbol shall conform to the specifications in Section 3.2, and the lengthwise size of the material
identification symbol "b" shall not exceed the lengthwise size of the Honda mark "(H)". If these
are not satisfied, only the material identification symbol shall be indicated. In case of any
questions about the Honda Brand Identity Guideline for applying the Honda mark, contact the
person in charge or the Intellectual Property Division of Honda.
5. The Honda Brand Identity Guideline is exclusive for Honda use, and it shall not be
distributed to suppliers.

Remarks 6: If all of the symbols cannot be indicated because of the parts' shapes, indicate only
the material identification symbol.

3.2 Size of Honda Mark and Material Identification Symbol
The size of the Honda mark and the material identification symbol will conform to Fig. 2 as a rule.

Remarks: If the Honda mark and the material identification symbol cannot be indicated in 26
mm and 3 mm, respectively, due to space limitation on the parts, the sizes may be smaller upon
agreement among the parties concerned. The smallest size of the material identification symbol,
however, shall be legible by the unaided eye.

3.3 Height (Depth) of Honda Mark and Material Identification Symbol

The Honda marks and material identification symbols shall be either projected or recessed by
embossing, stamping (punch marking), etc. Honda marks and material identification symbols
shall be 0.1 mm or more in depth or height, and shall be legible without damaging function or
appearance of parts.
Remarks: If the above methods are difficult or affect the functions, then stickers, hot stamping,
permanent ink stamping, or other indications that are legible and not easily erasable may be used.
In this case, the height (depth) of the material symbol shall not apply.
3.4 Location
On unit parts, the marks shall be indicated at an easily legible location. For ASSY/COMP parts,
the marks shall be indicated on legible locations of the parts that are separated off or
disassembled as much as possible. However, if separating off or disassembling is impossible, a
collective indication may be made on the outer surface and supplemental information may be
provided, as necessary, to show the components. When there is no supplemental information,
indication shall be made, same as a part of composite structure in Section 5, by separating by a
comma " , ".
Remarks:
1. "Can be separated off" means that a part can be separated off by such as bare hand, a driver, a
spanner, or a cutter.
2. For long parts such as bumpers, the material symbol shall be indicated at least at two
locations if necessary.

Example of collective indication (In case of HEADLIGHT ASSY)

LENS >PC<
HSG. >PP-TD30<
REFL. >PPS-MD60<
EXTN. >PC<

4. MATERIAL IDENTIFICATION SYMBOL

The material identification symbols are specified in Section 4.1 Resin Parts and in Section 4.2
Rubber Parts. The Material identification symbols shall be indicated by the ISO symbols (*2),
and those not specified in ISO shall be indicated by this HES. The symbols not specified in this
standard or those for new materials shall be applied after confirming with the Material Research
Department at the R&D Center.
Note (*2) The ISO symbols of resins refer to those specified in "ISO 18064:2003 Thermoplastic
elastomers -- Nomenclature and abbreviated terms," "ISO 1043-1:2001 Plastics - Symbols and

4.1.4 Supplementary Symbol

The supplementary symbol indicates the type of a filler or reinforcing material, if it is used,
combined with a dash (-) after the symbol for a basic polymer (after the symbol for special
characteristics, if applicable) to indicate the symbol and contents in percent by mass of the filler
or reinforcing material. The first symbol shows a filler or reinforcing material, and the second
symbol shows its physical form or structure.
Composite material blended with two or more fillers or reinforcing materials shall be indicated
by a supplementary symbol in parentheses, combining each symbol with a plus (+) sign. In this
circumstance, the total percent by mass of the fillers or reinforcing materials may be outside the
parentheses. The supplementary symbols of the fillers or reinforcing materials shall conform to
