1. The Korean War began in 1950.

2. The communist North Korean army invaded


democratic South Korea.

the spread of Communism.

4. American troops fought to help keep South


Korea a free, democratic country.

5. It is estimated that over 5 million deaths
occurred during the 3-year Korean War.

6. The war ended in 1953 when an


armistice, or cease fire, was signed.

7. The sides decided to split into 2 separate


countries at the 38th parallel, a line of latitude.

8. The countries remain divided today.

9. A two-mile wide buffer zone, called the DMZ,


separates the nations.

leaders met to discuss peace & denuclearization.

people. Torture & executions are common.

14. North Korea spends more money on its military


than on food for its own people. It is one of the
poorest countries in the world.

to have nuclear weapons.

16. They threaten war with the US, whom they


blame for dividing their country.

for privileged citizens. It is one of the few areas in the
