AT-802 SERVICE INFORMATION LETTER No. 802-0090

Subject: Elevator Square Trailing Edge Modification
Revision: B
Serial Numbers: All AT-802/802A

SUMMARY

Some AT-802’s have been reported to have a tendency to oscillate in rough air after some time
in service. This problem has been investigated by Air Tractor and we are pleased to announce a
solution that has been FAA approved. The shape of the trailing edges on the elevators has been
changed from round to square. This change improves longitudinal stability of the aircraft.

In order to make this improvement available for everyone, Air Tractor has developed a
modification that is easy to install in the field. This installation is a small skin that slips over and
is riveted onto the existing trailing edge. The installation has been designed to minimize
downtime and labor. Should you wish to install a new set of elevators with square trailing edges,
a set may be purchased through your Air Tractor dealer.

The necessary parts and procedures are listed below. These parts are available for purchase
through your Air Tractor dealer. The installation drawing, Snow Engineering Co. Drawing
30613 Sheet 1, will be supplied as well. Remove 71335-1 Pitch Damper (if installed) before
installing this modification.

INSTALLATION GUIDE

The following information is for reference only. Complete installation instructions are detailed
on Drawing 30613 Sheet 1. Repeat for both elevators (left and right).

1. Clean and dry the existing trailing edge surface.

2. Fit the 30612-5 modification skin onto the existing trailing edge, making sure the aft edge
of the existing trailing edge is snug with the inside of the new modification skin. Leave a
gap approximately 1/8” between the modification skin’s outboard edge and the elevator
tip’s inboard edge as shown on Drawing 30613 Sheet 1.

3. Drill the existing trailing edge skin #30 to match the hole pattern of the 30612-5 skin.
Install CR2173-4-02 cherry rivets. See Drawing 30613 Sheet 1, Note 3.

4. Drill two #30 drain holes in the lower, outboard edge of the modification skin as shown
on Drawing 30613 Sheet 1.

5. Fit the 30612-6 modification skin onto the existing trailing edge. Ensure this skin is in
contact with the outboard end of the 30612-5 skin and that the aft edge of the existing
trailing edge is snug with the inside of the new modification skin.

6. Drill the existing trailing edge skin #30 to match the hole pattern of the 30612-6 skin.
Install CR2173-4-02 cherry rivets. See Drawing 30613 Sheet 1, Note 3.

7. Trim the inboard edge of the modification skin flush with the existing trailing edge skin.
See Drawing 30613 Sheet 1, Detail B.

8. Drill two #30 holes (top and bottom) per the dimensions shown on Detail B of
installation Drawing 30613 Sheet 1. Install CR2173-4-02 cherry rivets.

9. Seal all edges and skin laps with PRC sealant. See Sealant Application Guide on next
page. After the sealant is cured, apply touchup paint (not supplied) to cherry rivets and
skin laps.

IMPORTANT
Make sure that the edge of the modification skin lies flat
along the existing elevator skin. Sealant must be secure,
smooth and uniform to maintain the aerodynamic integrity of
the elevator.

10. Check the balance of the modified elevator according to process specification PS 145.
Maximum unbalance is 63.15 in.-lbs.

Instructions for Continued Airworthiness:

PREFLIGHT INSPECTION
Inspect the elevator modification skin for security. Inspect condition of modification skin
sealant. Sealant must be smooth and uniform to keep water and chemical out, as well as
to maintain the aerodynamic integrity of the elevators.
