Protecting Outputs from Inductive Load Damage

Depending on the load, a protection circuit may be needed for the outputs on the controllers
and certain modules. Inductive loads using DC voltages may create voltage reflections
resulting in overshoot that will damage or shorten the life of output devices.

CAUTION
OUTPUT CIRCUIT DAMAGE DUE TO INDUCTIVE LOADS
Use an appropriate external protective circuit or device to reduce the risk of inductive
direct current load damage.
Failure to follow these instructions can result in injury or equipment
damage.

Relay outputs can support up to 250 Vac. Inductive damage to these types of outputs can
result in welded contacts and loss of control. Each inductive load must be equipped with a
protection device such as a peak limiter, RC circuit or flyback diode. Capacitive loads are not
supported by these relays.

WARNING
RELAY OUTPUTS WELDED CLOSED
 Always protect relay outputs from inductive alternating current load damage using an
appropriate external protective circuit or device.
 Do not connect relay outputs to capacitive loads.
Failure to follow these instructions can result in death, serious injury,
or equipment damage.

Protective circuit A: This protection circuit can be used for both AC and DC load power
circuits.

 C represents a value from 0.1 to 1 µF.

 R represents a resistor of approximately the same resistance value as the load.

Protective circuit B: This protection circuit can be used for DC load power circuits.

Use a diode with the following ratings:

 Reverse withstand voltage: power voltage of the load circuit x 10.
 Forward current: more than the load current.

EIO0000000533 07/2014 31
M168 Controllers

Protective circuit C: This protection circuit can be used for both AC and DC load power
circuits.

In applications where the inductive load is switched on and off frequently and/or rapidly,
ensure that the continuous energy rating (J) of the varistor exceeds the peak load energy by
20% or more.
Digital Output Wiring Diagram with Different Sources

Relay Groups
The outputs are divided into groups with different commons (COMx, COMy, COMx-y).
The groups are as follows:
 Connector n°1 : COM1-2 / NO1 / NO2; COM3 / NO3
 Connector n°2 : COM4-5 / NO4 / NO5; COM6-7 / NO6 / NO7
 Connector n°3 : COM8 / NO8 / NC8
There are different levels of isolation between the groups and consequently these may have
different voltages.
The relays belonging to the same group have minimal level of isolation between their
commons and therefore must have the same energy level (24 Vac, 24 Vdc or 230 Vac).
The current through the common terminals must not exceed the rated current:
 COMx: maximum current of the relay
 COMx-y: maximum current of 10 A
NOTE: Each relay connector must have the same unique voltage.

DANGER
ELECTRIC SHOCK
Do not mix voltage types or levels on the same relay connector.
Failure to follow these instructions will result in death or serious
injury.

2.1.4.2 Expansion Bus Address Configuration

Each device on the expansion bus must have a unique address.
The M168 controller address is set by the hardware wizard in the SoHVAC software and is
set during application download in the M168 controller.
The TM168E●● expansion module has a default address of "2" set by the factory.
The TM168GDB or TM168GDTS remote displays have a default address of "99" set by the
factory.
When the expansion bus Network has multiple devices with duplicated addresses, they can
be adjusted using the CAN Config tool in the SoHVAC software, the controller or the remote
display menus. Follow these steps to use the CAN Config tool in the SoHVAC software:
 Connect the programming cable to the programming port of the device
 Start the CAN Config tool in the Tools menu in SoHVAC software
 Select the COM port to communicate with the device
 Click Connect to read the device parameters
 Modifiy the parameters
 Click Apply to store the modified parameters into the device

2.1.6.3 Configuration Using a Remote Display

The TM168B23●● controllers do not have a built-in display. Configuration is possible using a
remote display.
To access the configuration pages of a controller without a built-in display:
 Connect the remote terminal to the controller using the ExpBus port.
 In the display, configure the physical node address of the controller.
NOTE: the factory settings for this value is the same as the factory settings for the
controller.
 When the node is recognized, Ok appears in the third row.
 Enter the controller main page.
 For more information, refer to Configuration of a controller with built-in display.

2.1.8 Backup/Restore
Introduction
Application parameters and hardware configurations can be stored (backup) from/into the
controller flash memory. This operation is useful during commissioning when multiple
parameters are changed and a restore point is required.
 copy application parameters and hardware configuration parameters from the controller
to the controller flash memory (backup)
 copy application parameters and hardware configuration parameters from controller flash
memory to the controller (restore)
Application Parameters
Application parameters are variables defined in the application program using the Par entity
(Par). Hardware configuration parameters are the configuration parameters for
inputs/outputs and communication ports.
NOTE: From the remote display press both ESC and RIGHT buttons for 3 seconds to
access the controller menus.
Backup Parameters
Follow the following procedure to backup parameters to the controller flash memory:
Step Description
1 Make sure that the controller is connected to the power supply
Press both Up and Down buttons for 3 seconds to access the menus (if you are using the

There is an optional gasket available for your remote display (TM168AGDIP65). Although
you may optionally install the gasket, it is necessary to help absorb vibration and to resist
liquids from passing behind the remote display. To install it, proceed as follows:
 place the gasket on the surface of the panel opening,
 align the gasket with the mounting frame of the remote display
 install the remote display in the panel opening.

After installing and commissioning, inspect the gasket periodically for signs of damage, age
or dirt and replace the gasket when necessary to maintain the IP65 rating of your installation.

WARNING
COMPROMISED IP RATING DUE TO GASKET DAMAGE
 Inspect the gasket periodically as required by your operating environment to ensure
the initial IP level.
 Replace worn or damaged gaskets immediately, or at least replace the gasket
regulary.
Failure to follow these instructions can result in death, serious injury,
or equipment damage.

5.1 Overview
The parameter key TM168APARAKEY allows you to backup/restore your controller
application parameters and hardware configuration parameters rapidly from/to several
machines:
 copy application parameters and hardware configuration parameters from the controller
to the parameter key (backup)
 copy application parameters and hardware configuration parameters from the parameter
key to the controller (restore).

5.2 Application Parameters

Application parameters are variables defined in the application program using the Par entity
(Par). Hardware configuration parameters are the configuration parameters for
inputs/outputs and communication ports
The M168 controller needs to be connected to a power supply to use the parameter key.
NOTE: In case the M168 controller has no built-in display, it is possible to connect a remote
display to access the menus. From the remote display press both ESC and RIGHT keys for
3 seconds to access the controller menus.
