CT RATIO TEST

This procedure is to familiarize technicians with means to perform a ratio

test on current transformers.

CURRENT TRANSFORMER RATIO. The current applied to the primary

Special Equipment 1. Calibrated Current Transformer Test Set or the equipment listed below:

2. A source of AC current in the top one-third of the current transformer

(CT) being tested.

3. Calibrated (within one year) ammeters (2) with a range that will give
approximately 1/2 scale readings of the primary and secondary
currents.

Procedure

Step Action

1 For CT test sets, follow the manufacturers instructions associated

with the test set, otherwise proceed to step 2.

2 Remove all burden or shorting devices from the CT being tested

and record the current flowing from the CT secondary.

3 Install ammeters in primary and secondary circuits (ensure

secondary circuit is complete –MUST NOT BE OPEN
CIRCUITED!). Warning: Dangerous high voltage can be
developed on open circuited CT secondaries!

Inject and record a primary current in the CT. This current should
be approximately in the upper 1/3 of the CT primary current rating.
It may be necessary to install several wraps of primary wire
through the core of the CT primary to obtain the desired secondary
current on CT’s with high ratios.

5 Divide the primary current by the secondary and record this ratio.

6 Discuss the acceptance testing and applicable safety standards

with Owner/Owner Rep. and workmen to insure the safety of all
personnel. It should not be done in hazardous atmospheres and
requires a welding-type permit in these areas.
