Lesson Plan in English 9

I. Objectives
The learners should be able to;
 identify the main idea, purpose, and audience of the material viewed
 analyze the use of visual and verbal elements in the material viewed
 interpret the message and tone of the material viewed
 express their opinions and insights on the material viewed

III. Procedure
A. Preliminary Activities

 Checking Attendance
 Review of the previous lesson or drill
B. Motivation
Show the students a poster that promotes an advocacy or a cause. Ask them to describe what
they see and think the poster is about. Elicit their prior knowledge and experiences related to the
topic of the poster.

C. Activity
Show the students a video that relates to the poster. The video can be a documentary, a
news report, a testimonial, or a public service announcement. Ask them to pay attention to the
details and information presented in the video.

D. Analysis

After watching the video, ask the students to answer the following questions in pairs or
groups:

 What is the main idea or theme of the video?


 What is the purpose or goal of the video?
 Who is the intended audience of the video?
 How does the video use visual and verbal elements to convey its message?
 What is the tone or mood of the video?
 How does the video relate to the poster?
 What is your opinion or reaction to the video?
E. Abstraction

Main Idea- according to vocabulary.com; (noun) the most important point of a story, book, or
communication. How to find the main idea on a topic? The first is to identify the topic. Second,
summarize with your own words, then check the first and last sentences and the last is look for repetition
of ideas.

Purpose- in psychology, the purpose is an abiding intention to achieve a long-term goal that is
both personally meaningful and makes a positive mark on the world. Goal- is an objective or target that
someone is trying to reach or achieve.

Tone and mood- Tone and mood are two literary elements that are often confused, yet they have
distinct meanings and purposes. Tone is the attitude or general character of a piece of writing and is often related
to the attitude of the writer or speaker. Mood refers specifically to the effect a piece of writing has on the reader.
Mood is the overall sensation that the reader gets from engaging with a story, and it is often expressed through the
setting, plot, and characters.

Visual and verbal elements- Visual elements are adding diagrams to your notes, using matrices
and maps, and organizing notes and outlines to take down notes. Verbal elements are asking questions,
recording lectures, rewriting notes, reciting and rehearsing read out loud, and using study groups.

Mental Health according to WHO, is a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the
stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn well and work well, and contribute to their community. It
includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being, and affects how we think, feel, and act. The
quality of a person’s mental health is often measured by how adaptively they can cope with everyday
stressors. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through
adulthood.

E. Application:

Distribute a worksheet to the students. The worksheet contains a summary of the video, a list of
keywords or phrases, and a blank space for writing an interpretation of the message conveyed in the
video. Instruct the students to use the summary and the keywords or phrases to write a paragraph that
explains the message and tone of the video in their own words. Remind them to use complete sentences,
proper grammar, and appropriate vocabulary.

IV. Evaluation

Collect the worksheets and use a rubric to assess the students’ interpretation of the message
conveyed in the video. The rubric can include criteria such as content, organization, language, and
mechanics.

V. Assignment

Write their reflection or interpretations of the message conveyed in the video, and listen to a
selected paper to read in front of the class. Encourage them to listen to each other’s views and
perspectives. Ask them to reflect on how the material viewed influenced their thinking and feelings about
the topic.
