USO DEL DICCIONARIO BILINGÜE


El diccionario bilingüe es una herramienta muy importante cuando se va a leer textos en
inglés pues ayuda a encontrar el significado de las palabras desconocidas cuando no se
lo puede inferir del contexto.
Algunas recomendaciones para un uso adecuado:
1. Observar las abreviaturas que presenta el diccionario:
gramaticales (s., a., adv. v.t., v.i., pron., conj., prep.)
específicas de cada área (bot., geol., quim., mat., etc.).
2. Determinar la categoría gramatical de la palabra que se busca.
Por ejemplo:
spring: v.i. (verbo intransitivo) saltar, brincar, etc
v.t. (verbo transitivo) hacer saltar, salir, surgir o brotar (líquidos), etc.
s. (sustantivo) muelle, resorte, primavera, etc
a. (adjetivo) elástico, primaveral, etc
Puede ocurrir que esa palabra forme parte de una expresión o una frase verbal. En ese
caso se buscará en forma completa, tal como aparece en el texto:
spring up: nacer, brotar, etc.
spring a surprise: dar una sorpresa
spring a leak: empezar a salirse
También puede formar una palabra compuesta como:
springboard: trampolín
3. Dentro de la categoría gramatical de la palabra que se busca, se elegirá el significado
que más se adecue al contexto.

5.1 Con respecto a los verbos:


a. En inglés los verbos aparecen en su forma base (infinitivo sin to), en
consecuencia el pasado, el participio pasado y el participio presente de los
verbos regulares no figuran en el diccionario.
b. El pasado y participio pasado de los verbos irregulares remiten a la base
verbal en la mayoría de los diccionarios. Ejemplo:
wrote (pasado)
remiten a write (base verbal)

written (participio pasado)

c. Tampoco aparecen los pasados de verbos regulares que duplican consonantes.


Ejemplo:
stopped (pasado y participio pasado) se buscará bajo stop (base verbal)
d. La tercera persona singular de los verbos en presente no figura en los
diccionarios. Por ejemplo :
work (base verbal) works
go y no goes

5.2 Con respecto a los sustantivos: ellos aparecen en singular. Por ejemplo :
gas gases
property y no properties

5.3 Con respecto a los adjetivos y adverbios con los sufijos er y est (que indican
comparación): ellos no aparecen en el diccionario. Por ejemplo:
