2. Introduction
The trend to achieve higher production and accuracy has led to varied reflections and
developments in the whole of mechanical engineering. Flexible prefabricated construction systems
demand a modular assembly in order to adjust to the constant changing requirements and various
assignments. The choice of an optimal system is only possible, when all operating instructions
were analysed, the resulting requirements clearly explained and the individual components are co-
ordinated with one another.
TURIAN-rotating joints offer top technology in the field of rotating joints within the scope of a
complete solution.
Rotating joints are precision made elements and must be handled with care; if improperly used it
could leak or fail. The heart of a rotating joint is a balanced mechanical seal whose faces are
lapped flat to within two light bands and to a rugosity less than 0,25 m Rt. But there are also
some joints equipped with special elastomere seals. These high-quality slide seal rings consist of
a ball race, made of PTFE and a pressure activated O-ring
Testing
All rotating joints are function and pressure tested before shipment; this operation guarantees the
customer that the rotating joint is tight and that it can be installed with full assurance.
Rotating joints allow the transfer of compressed air, vacuum, fluids and gases from a stationary
line to a rotating line.
These rotating joints are used for control rotating pneumatic or hydraulic cylinders, for index tables
and for water cooling of rotating circuits. The housing of rotating joints for air or oil is made of
aluminium, the rotor is made of carbon steel, in case of water the housing is made of brass and
the rotor is made of stainless steel. Two ball bearings give the alignment. A recovery hole “DR”
preserve ball bearings from leakage when seals are worn.
If different fluids or mediums are used, it is better to separate them by means of additional
recovery holes. But in this case the total length will increase of 50 mm (per each recovery hole).
The rotating joint was designed and built under current technical standards. It is reliable and safe
when operated as directed. Should it not be operated by trained personal or used improper or in
the wrong way the rotating joint may be damaged rapidly.
Each person that is dealing with the instalment, the operation, maintenance and repair of the
rotating joint must have read the instructions completely and must have understood them. This
person must have the necessary qualifications or the specific field of activities. Only qualified
personal should be permitted to execute work on rotating joints.
All activities that concern the instalment, the operation, preparation, maintenance and repair must
be done while the machinery is completely shut-off.
Any activity that could impair the safety of the operator or third parties, or that of the rotating joint
in his immediate or further environment is to be emitted.

The operator has to make sure, that unauthorised personnel may avoid the rotating joint. He is
obliged to test the joint, at least once during the shift, for external noticeable defects and damages
that would impair the safety and has to give notice at once.
5. Construction
This rotating joint is designed to allow the passage of fluid to operate more independent rotating
circuits. As in the case of an indexing table with 4 hydraulic blocks which operate independently of
each other or the use of different mediums for pneumatic units, hydraulic clamps or vacuum
elements.
The rotating joint, regardless of the design, consists of the following main parts

7. Installation
Only the producer or qualified personal is allowed to dismantle the rotating joint. Improper
handling of the rotating joints or its individual parts can cause malfunction, that can only be
removed by the producer. For damages due to mistakes during assembly or dismantling no
liability will be assumed.
At the beginning of assembly the rotating joint has to be checked for eventual exterior damages. It
should be made sure that no interfering edges may obstruct the intended installation position .
The rotating joint is a precision made equipment and it must be handled with care and it must be
protected from dirt. We strongly suggest to wash the circuit before mounting the rotating joint. This
type of rotating joints does not have to use any antirotation bracket. The installation of the rotating
joint to the pipe must absolutely be made by a flexible hose of appropriate length, in such a way
that it will make a slight band in the rotation direction. Don not give radial load.
Do not use rigid pipes!
We suggest you to install the joint as follows:
clamp the joint body on the backside (avoid bearings area) and thread the flexible tube fitting
make use of rotor flats by using appropriate wrench to tighten the joint to the machine shaft
To seal-off, between the rotor and the machine shaft, use the flat metal ring supplied with the joint.
An inaccurate mounting can significantly reduce the life of the rotating joint. Even if at speeds of up
to approximately 20 rpm a lightly off-centre mounting does not compromise the functioning of the
rotating joint, but it can lead to early abrasion. The rotating joint must never be used to support
other machine components. The connecting hoses to the rotating joints must be adequately
supported an d it is recommended that the connection to the stationary body of the joint must be
with flexible type hoses.
8. Drainports
Attention must be paid to the unhindered drain of the leaking fluid. The drain port has to be placed
in that way that the fluid can drain off. Ascending pipes cause a fluid column, that may damage
seals as well as bearings.
9. Medium
Due to the installed seals the multiways joint can theoretically be used for dry run. The seals life
will be influenced essentially by the filtering of the medium. In cases of flow media containing
abrasive impurities it is very important to provide adequate filtering.

10. Filtering
Seal life is directly influenced by the filtration standards of the fluid. Normally the filtration should
retain parts in excess of 50 m size. When this is not possible please contact our engineering
dept.
12.Maintenance
The joint should be dismantled only by the producer or qualified personal. Incompetent handling of
the joint can cause malfunctions, that can only be repaired by the producer. We will not assume
liability for damages caused by mistakes of dismantling or assembling.
In case of unexpected defects activities may be necessary – please contact our engineering dept.
Immediately.
13. Transport
In order to transport the rotating joint, it should be wrapped in such a way, that damages for
example by uncontrolled rolling around of the rotating joint or other transported parts, that may hit
it, can be eliminated. Pay especial attention to the rotor, that has to be protected against hits. All
connections have to be closed, in order to protect them from dirt particles.
