OVERVIEW
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
Purok 2, Libertad, Kauswagan, and Lanao del Norte are communities that are facing the
problem of noisy vehicles. Loud vehicles, particularly motorcycles and tricycles, frequently pass
through the main road leading to Poona Piagapo Road, affecting the environment and safety of
the residents, especially the children. The area is a residential and commercial location near the
main road, and the high traffic and number of noisy vehicles passing through have been
affecting the quality of life of the residents, especially the children and the elderly.
The problem of noisy vehicles in Purok 2, Libertad, Kauswagan, Lanao del Norte is significant
and persistent. Loud vehicles, particularly motorcycles and tricycles, frequently pass through
the main road, causing substantial environmental disturbance and posing dangers to the
community, especially the children and the elderly.
The impact of this problem is manifold. Firstly, the noise from vehicles is a major disturbance,
affecting the quality of life of the residents, particularly the children and the elderly. Secondly,
the high traffic and prevalence of noisy vehicles have been disrupting the daily lives of the
residents and creating a sense of insecurity. Thirdly, the noise from vehicles has been involved
in accidents, posing a safety concern.
The lack of strict and effective implementation of regulations on noisy vehicles has become a
pressing concern. It requires a comprehensive and sustainable solution to restore peace and
safety in the neighborhood, improve the quality of life of the residents, and ensure the well-
being of the community. The research questions posed in this study aim to address these
concerns and contribute to finding a solution to this problem.
CHAPTER II
INTRODUCTION
RESEARCH QUESTION:
The objective of this study is to understand the extent of the vehicle noise problem in Purok 2,
Libertad, Kauswagan, Lanao del Norte, its effects on residents' peace and comfort, its role in
accidents, and the community's views on noise control regulations and their willingness to
support such rules, with the ultimate goal of suggesting actions to reduce vehicle noise and
improve the quality of life in the community.
1. Is vehicle noise a big problem in Purok 2, Libertad, Kauswagan, Lanao del Norte?
10. Will reducing vehicle noise improve the quality of life in Purok 2?
The World Health Organization (WHO) has published several articles related to the impact of
environmental noise on public health. One of these publications, "Burden of Disease from
Environmental Noise," quantifies the healthy life years lost in Europe due to environmental
noise. Traffic noise, including noise from cars, trucks, and motorcycles, is considered the most
harmful environmental noise source (Source: World Health Organization, 2011).
According to a document titled "Noise Reduction" by the European Union in 2014, there has
been a significant focus on reducing noise in the automotive industry. Despite increased traffic,
EU noise emission limits have not changed since 1995. As more people are being affected by
traffic noise, the European Commission proposed to reduce the noise produced by various
types of vehicles. The regulation is expected to help reduce noise by around 25% (Source:
European Union, 2014).
A study conducted by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) in
2013 found that noise from vehicles can have significant effects on quality of life and health.
The study, "The Effects of Vehicle Noise Emission Regulations on Total Vehicle Noise," indicated
that regulations on vehicle noise have led to a reduction in total vehicle noise and that further
reductions are possible with more stringent regulations (Source: University of Michigan
Transportation Research Institute, 2013).
Japanese government has also implemented strict regulations on vehicle noise. The "Noise
Regulation Law" in Japan regulates noise from various sources, including vehicles. The law has
been effective in reducing noise pollution in urban areas. It sets noise standards for different
types of vehicles and requires vehicle manufacturers to take measures to reduce noise (Source:
Japanese Government, 2018).
A research paper titled "Effects of Traffic Noise on the Environment and Humans" published by
the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) in 2020 provides a comprehensive
review of the impact of traffic noise on the environment and humans. The paper highlights that
traffic noise is a significant environmental problem, especially in urban areas. Prolonged
exposure to traffic noise can lead to various health problems, including sleep disturbances,
cardiovascular diseases, mental health problems, and impaired cognitive function in children
(Source: National Center for Biotechnology Information, 2020).
THEORITICAL FRAMEWORK:
The theoretical framework of this case study is rooted in the understanding that noise
pollution, particularly from vehicles, significantly influences the quality of life and safety of
residents in a community. This is based on the Environmental Health Model which suggests that
environmental factors like noise pollution can impact human health and well-being. In this
study, vehicle noise is viewed as an environmental stressor that can lead to health issues such
as sleep disturbances and cardiovascular diseases.
Moreover, the study also leans on the Community Safety Theory and Regulatory Compliance
Theory. The former suggests that safety in a community is influenced by factors like the
behavior of its residents and potential hazards, with noisy vehicles being a potential hazard in
this case. The latter emphasizes the importance of regulations and their enforcement in
ensuring public safety. In the context of this study, it underlines the need for effective
implementation of noise control regulations to manage the problem of noisy vehicles.
CHAPTER III
METHODOLOGY
RESEARCH DESIGN:
The research design for this case study is a quantitative approach, which is ideal for quantifying
the problem and understanding the extent of the vehicle noise issue in Purok 2, Libertad,
Kauswagan, Lanao del Norte. This design allows for the collection of numerical data that can be
analyzed using statistical methods to draw conclusions about the effects of noisy vehicles on
residents' peace and comfort, its role in accidents, and the community's views on noise control
regulations.
DATA ANALYSIS :
The data collected from the interviews was analyzed using quantitative statistical methods. The
responses of the participants were coded and categorized based on the research questions.
Descriptive statistics such as frequencies and percentages were used to summarize the data
and provide a general understanding of the participants' perceptions and experiences regarding
vehicle noise in Purok 2, Libertad, Kauswagan, Lanao del Norte.
In addition, inferential statistics were also used to examine the relationships between variables
and to test the hypotheses. For instance, a correlation analysis was conducted to determine the
relationship between the level of vehicle noise and the residents' level of stress or discomfort. A
chi-square test was used to determine if there is a significant difference in the views of
residents on the need for noise control regulations and their willingness to support such rules.
The findings from the data analysis provided valuable insights into the extent of the vehicle
noise problem, its effects on residents, and the community's views on noise control regulations.
These insights were used to suggest actions to reduce vehicle noise and improve the quality of
life in the community.
