Proceedings
In line with the MATATAG Education Agenda, the
Department of Education has implemented the Catch-Up
Fridays as a subprogram of the Learning Recovery
Program. Specified in DepEd Order No. 001 s. 2024, its
objective is to effectively strengthen foundational, social,
and other relevant skills of learners necessary to
actualize the intent of the basic education curriculum by
focusing on the development of the learners' reading,
critical thinking, analytical, and writing skills. It
stipulates that All Fridays throughout the school year
shall therefore be designated as Catch-up Fridays.

In full support of this advocacy, Cabuynan Elementary

School commenced it Catch-up Friday session on
January 19.

The learning sessions are expected to enhance reading

fluency, comprehension, vocabulary development, and
overall reading proficiency as well as develop
appreciation of reading, values, health, and peace

education among learners.

Procedure:

1. Orientation

In order to acquaint teachers with the provisions of the

Catch-Up Friday program, a brief meeting was facilitated
by the school principal, Jasmin Z. Redoǹa, last January
15 after the flag ceremony. He then encouraged the
teachers to read through the DepEd memorandum to be
adept with the strategies and suggested activities for
reading intervention and enhancement.

2. Actual Reading Sessions

In the actual reading sessions, teachers adapted and

innovated the suggested reading activities and strategies
enclosed in the DepEd memorandum based on the
reading suitability and needs of the learners.

Teachers also provided learners the chance to reflect and

evaluate the reading materials through differentiated
tasks and activities.

Learners with higher reading proficiency levels were

enjoined to engage in pleasure reading and choose the
materials they prefer.

Some of the practices observed in the reading classes

were the following:

Choral Reading
Partner Reading
Book-Talk
Teacher Read-aloud
Brainstorming
Pick-Read-Spell
Poem analysis
Individual Reflection
Journal writing

especially for non-language teachers.

b) Scheduling- A Catch-up session schedule can be

organized so as not to disrupt the regular classes and
delivery of the curriculum.

c) Learner’s Engagement- Ensuring that students actively

participate and remain engaged during these sessions
may require a variety of creative teaching strategies.

III. CONCLUSION/ RECOMMENDATIONS

The conduct of Catch-up Fridays shows to positively affect and
address the literacy needs of students who struggle with reading skills. By
providing individualized instruction and implementing effective strategies,
these programs may significantly improve reading fluency,
comprehension, and overall reading proficiency of learners. Regular
monitoring and support from stakeholders may also be vital for sustaining
progress over time. Likewise, capitalizing resources into the catch-up
reading sessions can have a reflective impact on the overall students'
academic performance that is in par with the international standards.
