Character Mapping: Loyalty

Friday, September 30, 2022 10:53 AM

LOYALTY
Nicole Asong Nfonoyim-Hara, the Director of the Diversity Programs at Mayo
Clinic, defines the act of allyship as "when a person of privilege works in solidarity
and partnership with a marginalized group of people to help take down the
systems that challenge that group's basic rights, equal access, and ability to thrive
in our society." Throughout the novel, we see a complex web of loyalty as there
are a variety of people who are allies, pretend to be allies, or think that they are
allies for enslaved and Black people in America. There is also the loyalty of kin, of
two people in the same harmful space that must band together in order to
protect themselves or each other from further harm.

What does Octavia Butler is the nature of loyalty in times of terror? What makes
someone a harmful or ineffective ally? What is the price and merit of loyalty?
