Guide Questions:

→ What instrument was accompanied by the song you

heard?

→ How did you notice the rhythm of the song you heard?

→ What do we call this rhythm that is repetitive and

accompanied by the song?

What is Ostinato?

 An ostinato is a combination of long and short

sounds that are repeated as an accompaniment to a
song.
 It uses a repeat mark. It is also a rhythmic pattern
repeatedly used to accompany songs.
 It can be played using rhythmic instruments and
other sound sources.
 We use ostinato as an accompaniment to songs.
 Rhythmic instruments such as drums, maracas and
others can be used as accompaniment.
 It can also use different parts of the body such as
hands, feet and so on.
 It can be played by percussion or rhythmic
instruments such as drums, loud, tambourine, or
any other instrument beaten, grabbed, or shaken.
 The slowness or speed of the ostinato also
corresponds to the slowness or speed of the song. It
is common for a fast song to have a fast ostinato, and
a slow song to have a slow ostinato.

 Rhythmic ostinato is a repetitive rhythmic pattern

used as an accompaniment to the song.
 It can be played with rhythmic instruments and other
possible sources of sound.
 Creating a simple ostinato is an interesting task and
also a way for us to have fun and learn to make a
simple rhythmic pattern using a variety of rhythmic
instruments and body percussion.

The following rhythmic patterns are types of ostinato

which are in measure 2s, 3s, and 4s.
Lesson Plan in Music 3, First Quarter
Notice the symbols:

What does it mean?

Notice in the rhythmic patterns above that they are

repeated here because the ostinato may consist of one, two,
three or more rhythmic combination patterns that are
repeated. You must remember the ostinato and the song its
accompaniment is identical in size or measure. The song in
measure 2s must have an ostinato which is also in measure
2s, the song which is in 3s has ostinato, which is also 3s,
and the song which is in 4s should have ostinato which is in
4s.

 Enrichment Exercise
Instructions: Follow the legend on how to clap, tap or
flip the ostinato patterns below. Do this twice.
