5G NSA RAN n78

Solution Description for Telcel

Department: AM KAD Wireless Solution Sales Department

Date: 03/18/2021

Security Level:
Telcel NR NSA Solution
Telcel 5G NSA RAN Solution
1. Telcel first phase of 5G RAN solution will be based on NSA Option 3x, where 4G core
network will be used and LTE B7 will be anchor frequency
• Control plane will ne handled by eNB
• User Plane will be mainly handled by gNB, however eNB will be able to process it as well
• gNB will determine whether to offload traffic from eNB or from the gNb based on the air
interface quality and RLC buffer of the LTE/5G. EPC+
Control plane
2. 64T64R, 32T32R and 8T8R Massive MIMO will be deployed depending on traffic User plane
scenarios. S1 S1

3. 100 MHz channel in Band-C. X2

LTE B7
• Spectrum to be available in Q3 2020. 5G NR
Master site
• Central Frequency ARFCN: 633334 Secondary site

4. 5G TDD n78 will not be deployed concurrently with 5G DSS n7.

UE
• If 5G DSS already present in site, then 5G TDD will replace 5G DSS.
• If any particular situation requires that 5G TDD and 5G DSS is implemented in the same
site, then 5G TDD and 5G DSS will share the same baseband board, UBBPg3b,
considering that the software release is SRAN17 or later.

Telcel 5G NSA RAN gNB
❑ General principles:
• New BBU5900 is added for 5G NSA
• UBBPg3b as NR base band board considered for initial deployment of 3x100MHz in Band C. It can support NR FDD in the same board.
• UBBPg3a can be considered for future expansions when Telcel deploys additional spectrum for 5G, including mmWave.

Two BBUs Scenario in 5G Site
When BBU 5900 is added to an existing BBU3900, then interconnection of two BBUs is necessary

• BBU interconnection is for transmission of:

• control data, clock signals, and transmission data
• Inter BBU connection is done through CI ports using fiber
optical cable between UMPT boards
• BBU 5900 will act as Root BBU
• Tx and GPS clock connections will be from BBU 5900
• BBU 3900 will act as Leaf BBU
• Tx and GPS sync clock data will be received from BBU
5900
• Each BBU will act as an independent site with its own
O&M IP address and Site ID
• BBU3900 in leaf mode needs a UMPT version b1/e2. It
cannot support UMPTa2.

Co-MPT Base Station
▪ Telcel Base Stations are based on BBU chassis with Baseband boards (UBBP) and Main
Processing/Transport board (MPT)

▪ Co-MPT mode is implemented, that means one UMPT board in the BBU used for all deployed
technologies

▪ From O&M Perspective, a Co-MPT base station is identified in the U2020 as one single site with one
Single ID Site:

Co-MPT BTS O&M system of a co-MPT base station

Page 16 HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD.

5G Site IDs

• Scenario with a single BBU (BBU5900):

• Two or more technologies, the site will be tagged with MT
• Example, JL8756MT

• Scenario with two BBUs (BBU3900 and BBU5900):

• The BBU3900 will always be identified with the MT label
• Example, JL8756MT
• The BBU5900 will use the label:
• L2100 if you only have LTE
• Example JL6543L2100
• 5G DSS if you have 5G DSS, but not 5G in dedicated spectrum
• Example JL6543DSS
• NR if you have 5G in dedicated band (n78)
• Example JL5493NR

Page 17 HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD.

5G IP Addressing

• The NR service requires a new IP segment and VLAN.

• This new IP and VLAN segment applies to both 5G FDD DSS and 5G TDD n78.
• For O&M, a single IP address is used per BBU / UMPT. In the case of two BBUs, each BBU / UMPT
will have its own IP address, within the same / 29 segment.
• The gNB transmission links (NSA Option 3x) include the S1-U, X2 and O&M links.
• IP planning for 5G is done considering that different network segments and VLANs are used for
each service
• It is recommended that the IP submask of the new segment for 5G be / 29 (at least 4 addresses are
required).
• Isolation per VLAN is recommended.
