What is institutional correction?

INSTITUTIONAL CORRECTION. refers to the penal establishment under the


control of the Bureau of Correctional (BuCor) institutions.

Currently, the Philippine Corrections System is composed of the institutions in


the government, civil society and the business sector. All are involved in the
confinement, correction and restoration of persons charged for and/or convicted
of delinquent acts or crimes.

1. The New Bilibid Prisons (NBP)


2. The Davao Prison and Penal Farm
3. The Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (which houses the
world- renowned CPDRC Dancing Inmates)
4. Correctional Institution for Women
5. Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm
6. South Cotabato Rehabilitation and Detention Center
7. Manila City Jail

The Bureau of Corrections has for its principal task the rehabilitation of national
prisoners, or those sentenced to serve a term of imprisonment of more than three
years. It has seven institutional corrections under its wing and these are as
follows:

The government, plays a dominant role in the correction and rehabilitation of


offenders as all prisons or penitentiaries, jails and detention centers are under its
direct control and supervision. Health services, training, livelihood, spiritual
guidance and counselling are meanwhile provided by the civil society while the
business sector offers inmates opportunities for improved efficiency.
