Sexism, GNL and GFL
Sexism, GNL and GFL
I would like to dispel the notion that women are the ones that are primarily
affected by sexism. The fact of the matter is this: sexism is an attack on everyone.
Sexism exists everywhere. It is heard on the way we speak, read on the words
we write, and seen at the images we create and the way we act. Yes, women aren’t just
the ones that are impacted but men as well.
Sexism has been with us since time immemorial. It is around us from childhood
with boys encouraged to run, jump, and be active and girls be socialized into passive
pleasing ladylike behavior. It is present each time a sports woman is portrayed as a wife
and mother or asked to confirm to a girly, sexy stereotype and her sports achievements
are downplayed. It exists when men who look after their children or do common female
tasks such as laundry are ridiculed.
Gender-fair language
Gender-neutral language
With growing awareness, people are moving away from gendered terms and
embracing gender-neutral language especially now that women are able to hold
positions that are erstwhile perceived to be exclusive only for men. Yes, it is important
to use gender-neutral terms whenever we are referring to something that includes both
men and women or could be done by either a man or a woman because it is the most
realistic and accurate description.
