Engineered Solutions
We provide contract services for the metals industry, specializing in internal
logistics, product quality and resource recovery. We operate on site, and we
specify, own and maintain our plant or equipment. Each solution is engineered to
meet the needs of the individual customer.
High-value Products
In parallel, we commercialize high-value products to the metals, mining, utilities,
c o n s t ruction, shipping, and agriculture industries, converted from industrial
by-products generated by metals and mining production. We also extract the
metallic elements from the by-products, for recycling back into metals production.
A global organization
Harsco Metals operates across the ferrous, non-ferrous and precious metals
industries. As metals production increases in emerging economies to reflect local
demand from infrastructure projects and manufactured goods, our geographical
coverage has broadened to include the Americas, Europe, Africa, the Middle East,
and Asia-Pacific. And with contracts at more than 160 locations and in over 30
countries, it’s true to say that our operations follow the footprint of the metals
sector as a whole.
A History of Innovation
Innovation is in our DNA. As an organization, Harsco currently holds approximately
400 patents in 30 countries. We believe that the best innovation comes from the
‘chemistry’ of internal know-how allied to external expertise. Throughout our
history, we have sought to uncover the best process technologies, and incorporate
these into an engineered solution.

Our Solutions
Solving challenges
We work in partnership with the customer to deliver a
solution which is unique to each operating site because of
local differences in layout, logistics, metallurgy and
legislation, among other things. In our experience, there
are also common themes which emerge.

Logistics Solutions Scrap Management
• Baling
• Shearing
• Shredding
• Manual gas cutting/ High volume cutting with FerroCut™ machine
• Drop-balling
The video review feature of ScrapMaster™ gives the operator or furnace manager complete visibility of scrap
handling on site. Combined with DGPS tracking of scrap movements, it allows the furnace manager to rewind the
tape of operations, should there be a problem with a particular heat.

Logistics Solutions Product Management
At Tata Steel’s Aldwarke (UK) mill, the blooms coming from the caster are stored in the stockyard for cooling. Most
are air-cooled, but 40% are slow-cooled. Straightness of material for slow-cooled product is critical and needs to be
maintained throughout product handling. Harsco Metals uses a specially-adapted forklift truck, equipped with seven
evenly-spaced forks, and temperature-controlled cooling hoods to minimize the possibility of bending.

Product Quality
We offer a full range of solutions for ensuring that the final steel pr oduct is
accurately dimensioned and correctly finished, as specified by end users of the
steel. Transforming product dimensions and improving their surface quality is an
area where Harsco applies technology and expertise.
Harsco provide scarfing automation technology for ArcelorMittal at the East Chicago steel mill. As part of our
continuous improvement approach to technology, we have developed a facility for feedback to the client on the
scarfing operation – slab-by-slab – via an automated slab tracking system.
The scarfing operation is linked to the slab item tracking system, which gives ArcelorMittal the ability to scarf more
slabs in a given time period, without impacting on product quality.

Van Reenen's pass on the N3 between Johannesburg and Durban is one of the busiest highways in South Africa. Due
to heavy traffic and steep gradients, this section experienced premature road surface deterioration. Based on our
experience with the asphalt industry in the UK, we supplied steel slag aggregate from our nearby ArcelorMittal
Newcastle plant in South Africa. Following the success of the Van Reenen pass resurfacing, we now supply the
road aggregate for the entire N3 upgrading process.

Resource Recovery Solutions Stainless Steel
We process and recycle slag materials, including EAF and AOD slag:
Harsco provides a value added service to stainless steel manufacturers around the world. Utilizing over 70 years of
industry expertise, we re-engineer by-products into “green” co-products for the marketplace such as agricultural and
turf fertilizers. Each application packs the highest amount of total soluble silicon in the industry, providing a range
of benefits including increased water-use efficiency and greater yields.

Resource Recovery Solutions Non-Ferrous
Alba is Bahrain’s largest aluminum producer. As part of Alba's expansion, Harsco Metals has upgraded and expanded
its dross processing facility on the island. A new tilting furnace has been installed, combined with a new method for
converting previously hazardous waste into inert oxides for recycling. The new furnace meets the demand for
increased dross processing capacity from the customer, while maximizing aluminum yield from the recovery process.
In addition, a zero-waste solution has been designed for disposal of the residue.

Safety First
Injury-free workplace
We recognize that the metals industry environment is often hazardous but that
with the right equipment, training and systems these risks can be well controlled.
Safe Plant
Harsco leads the industry in its equipment standards. Our Hot work equipment
has many enhanced safety features developed by Harsco Metals including
automatic fire suppression systems, blast proof glass and louvers, thermal
cameras and escape hoods.
Safe People
It takes safe people to make safe systems work and therefore Harsco invests in
training for all employees through our SafeGuard safety program. New employees
are introduced to our safety principles on their first day with the company. We
explain our Cardinal Rules to them and the behaviors expected of them. Finally,
Safety, Health, Environment and Quality is a core module of the training that our
site managers undertake as part of our global management development program.
Safe Procedures
Harsco believes that managing Safety, Health, Environment and Quality is a
fundamental part of modern professional management. We have triple
c e rtification (ISO 9001 Quality Management, ISO14001 Environmental
Management and OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety) of our
management systems in many parts of the world and the remainder are working
towards this goal.
Safety First
Harsco has developed its own behavioral safety program to train employees to identify and correct unsafe
behaviors amongst their peers.
This is backed up by regular behavioral observations conducted by supervisors and managers who are
trained to coach employees. Employees are also encouraged to participate in safety groups improving
their operating environment.

CTO Harsco Minerals and Harsco Metals
Harsco Metals is tapping into applied research at the University of Science and Technology in Beijing (USTB), to
develop innovative by-product solutions for China’s steel industry. Through a joint research program established by
Harsco Metals, the University’s Engineering Research Center of Metallurgical Technology analyzed the output and
current uses for by-products generated by 8 different steel mills in China. As a result, Harsco will be collaborating with
USTB to propose resource recovery solutions for those mills.
