Spanning the Globe

Engineered Solutions
We provide contract services for the metals industry, specializing in internal
logistics, product quality and resource recovery. We operate on site, and we
specify, own and maintain our plant or equipment. Each solution is engineered to
meet the needs of the individual customer.

High-value Products
In parallel, we commercialize high-value products to the metals, mining, utilities,
c o n s t ruction, shipping, and agriculture industries, converted from industrial
by-products generated by metals and mining production. We also extract the
metallic elements from the by-products, for recycling back into metals production.

A global organization
Harsco Metals operates across the ferrous, non-ferrous and precious metals
industries. As metals production increases in emerging economies to reflect local
demand from infrastructure projects and manufactured goods, our geographical
coverage has broadened to include the Americas, Europe, Africa, the Middle East,
and Asia-Pacific. And with contracts at more than 160 locations and in over 30
countries, it’s true to say that our operations follow the footprint of the metals
sector as a whole.

We also realize that cost-efficiency is key when outsourcing a part of your

operation, and we believe that Continuous Improvement is the best policy. So we
draw on our unique global scale to apply best operating practice when designing
solutions, in order to ensure the benefits spread to all our customers wherever
they are located.

A History of Innovation
Innovation is in our DNA. As an organization, Harsco currently holds approximately
400 patents in 30 countries. We believe that the best innovation comes from the
‘chemistry’ of internal know-how allied to external expertise. Throughout our
history, we have sought to uncover the best process technologies, and incorporate
these into an engineered solution.

Our Solutions

Solving challenges
We work in partnership with the customer to deliver a
solution which is unique to each operating site because of
local differences in layout, logistics, metallurgy and
legislation, among other things. In our experience, there
are also common themes which emerge.

Many metals producers today are asking:

• How can we minimize raw material and energy costs?

• What methods are open to us to optimize logistical
efficiency?
• What is the most cost-effective route to achieve the
right product quality?
• How do we ensure compliance with tightening
environmental regulations?

We provide a range of solutions addressing these

challenges and opportunities.

Logistics Solutions Scrap Management

Integration of arising scrap and merchant scrap

Harsco is able to discharge scrap arriving by road, rail or barge. Internally arising or
purchased scrap can be upgraded to meet the steelmaker’s exact requirements.

Scrap upgrading services include:

• Baling
• Shearing
• Shredding
• Manual gas cutting/ High volume cutting with FerroCut™ machine
• Drop-balling

Timely and accurate scrap delivery to the furnace

Whatever the mill’s scrap arrival points, scrap yard layout, or distance to the
furnace, we will design a logistical solution by selecting the right cranes and mobile
equipment.

Real-time DGPS tracking of scrap movement, as well as electronic weighing

systems ensure baskets or chutes are loaded in accordance with the menus
received electronically from the furnace. The flexibility of our ScrapMaster™
scrap management system allows rapid changes in melt programs without
affecting timely basket delivery.

Least-cost scrap mix for each steel grade

By analyzing available scrap on the ground, we can apply least-cost scrap menus to
suit immediate production needs. The scrap melt module in ScrapMaster™
optimizes scrap inputs, over just one or a series of heats. The cost of external scrap
can be minimized by planning purchases according to expected steelmake and
scrap grades required.

Logistics Solutions Scrap Management

The video review feature of ScrapMaster™ gives the operator or furnace manager complete visibility of scrap
handling on site. Combined with DGPS tracking of scrap movements, it allows the furnace manager to rewind the
tape of operations, should there be a problem with a particular heat.

Logistics Solutions Product Management

Quality control and Inventory management

Our logistics solutions optimize on-site transportation and handling of semi-finished
and finished products.

• Product handling, stocking and transport

• Hydrogen diffusion
• Quality control and inspection of semi-finished products
• Internal transport to road, rail or sea dispatch points with specialized equipment
• Full packaging service for cold-rolled and tinplate materials

Just in time delivery

The movement of vehicles and stock is tracked using differential GPS or radio
frequency (RFID) tagging, allowing timely retrieval and delivery of items to the
next production point. Products are identified using stamping, bar coded tags, or
adhesive labels depending on the temperature.

Logistics Solutions Product Management

At Tata Steel’s Aldwarke (UK) mill, the blooms coming from the caster are stored in the stockyard for cooling. Most
are air-cooled, but 40% are slow-cooled. Straightness of material for slow-cooled product is critical and needs to be
maintained throughout product handling. Harsco Metals uses a specially-adapted forklift truck, equipped with seven
evenly-spaced forks, and temperature-controlled cooling hoods to minimize the possibility of bending.

7 8
Product Quality

We offer a full range of solutions for ensuring that the final steel pr oduct is
accurately dimensioned and correctly finished, as specified by end users of the
steel. Transforming product dimensions and improving their surface quality is an
area where Harsco applies technology and expertise.

Our services include:

• Full face and spot scarfing by machine or hand

• Dye penetration testing to identify surface defects
• Slitting and sub-dividing of slabs
• Grinding of stainless steel products

Surface conditioning to remove imperfections

Prior to entering the rolling mill, the surface quality of hot or cold slabs can be
improved by scarfing. Scarfing can be performed by our highly skilled manual
scarfers or by using our patented Androfer scarfing machine. For stainless and
special steels, grinding provides an effective method for improving surface quality
prior to further processing.

Dimensioning to meet size specification

Slitting and sub-dividing is performed for many clients using highly productive
automated oxycutting machines which precisely cut slab and plate to a variety of
shapes and sizes.

Product Quality Solutions

Harsco provide scarfing automation technology for ArcelorMittal at the East Chicago steel mill. As part of our
continuous improvement approach to technology, we have developed a facility for feedback to the client on the
scarfing operation – slab-by-slab – via an automated slab tracking system.

The scarfing operation is linked to the slab item tracking system, which gives ArcelorMittal the ability to scarf more
slabs in a given time period, without impacting on product quality.
