Feed Back Note For Heater Firing PID
Feed Back Note For Heater Firing PID
Background :BACKGROUND:
As Per Past Practice, EIL BEDB Part-BHeater firing legend PID (A758-79-41-00-1181 Rev 0 Sheet
1 0f of 2 ) which is a part of BEDB Part-B shows Heater Trip interlock for the following
scenarios:which are typically followed in Heater PID’s developed as a part of EIL process package
and also submitted to Licensors during BEDB preparation to incorporate in Licensor PID’s as
applicable. Since many of the OISD requirements are mandatory in nature and needs to be complied,
it is imperative that the trip logic included in legend PID shall conform to the OISD mandatory trip
logic requirements.
DISCUSSION:
The Standard legend PID currently shows the following interlocks (refer Annexure-01) :
1. Interlock I-8101: Trip actuated by low low feed flow (2oo3) of individual pass for multipass
heater.
2. Interlock I-8102: Trip actuated by High high outlet Temperature of the heater (2003) at the
cCommon outlet
hHeader.
3. Interlock I-8103: Trip actuated by High high outlet Temperature of the heater (2003) at the
individual passes of the Multi pass Heater.
of the Multi pass Heater.
4. Interlock I-8104: Trip actuated by Sum of low Low low flow of any two pass (through
calculation
block)
of the Multi pass Heater. Lowest FI signal out of 3 FI’s in the individual pass is taken for the
input to the summation block.
5. Interlock I-8105: Trip actuated by Low low total flow for all passes (through calculation block)
of the
Multi pass Heater. Lowest FI signal out of 3 FI’s in the individual pass is taken for the input to
the summation block.
Note-14: In case of a Heater individual flow trips are not considered,Trips to be considered on low
low total flow.
Note-16: Calculation block to add low flow of any two passes and total flow of all the passes.
The above interlocks were cross-checked with OISD mandatory requirements as specified in OISD-
152 second edition (published on year 2013) clause no. (4.2.5.1) and OISD-111 second edition
(Published on year 2016) clause no. (10.3.1) for compliance.
1. Low low feed flow on a pass coupled with high-high outlet temperature of the same pass.
2. Low pass flow in minimum two passes or low total flow for a multi pass furnace. In the case
of catalytic process furnaces like Reformer employing a liquid Hydrocarbon feed and
Recycle gas stream, the furnace shutdown should get actuated when Recycle gas failure
occurs.
3. High High Combined outlet Temperature.
4. High High Coil outlet temperature on each pass.
5. High furnace Coil Pressure.
1. Low-Low pass flow in any of the passes or Low-Low total flow (as applicable) for a multi
pass furnace. In the case of catalytic process furnaces like HCU, HDT, CRU furnaces
employing a liquid hydrocarbon feed and recycle gas stream, the furnace shutdown shall get
actuated on Low-Low flow of recycle gas as well as on low –low feed flow.
2. Fuel gas/fuel oil low-low pressure and both together in case of combination firing. (Wherever
LP off- gases are considered for firing, flame arrestor along with solenoid operated SDV
should be provided to cut-off the LP off gas flow).
3. Failure of both FD fan(s) (sensed by motor not running) or low speed indication of both FD
fans or low-low combustion air pressure combined with low-low combustion air flow.
4. High-high arch pressure.
5. High-High common coil outlet temperature or high-high outlet temperature in any pass.
6. Low-Low Pilot gas pressure (Actions shall be as per emergency shutdown –refer clause
no.11.4)
It is evident that note-14 of legend PID is not in line with the OISD-152 requirements points (i)
and (ii). This inconsistency triggers the need for updations of notes of legend PID.
Although OISD-111 is of 2016 edition and OISD-152 is 2013 edition, both the OISD have been
taken into consideration and a wholistic approach has been taken to rationalize the notes of legend
PID.
RECOMMENDATION:
To comply with OISD -152 requirements the following changes are proposedhave been
incorporated in Legend PID of BEDB Part-B for VRMP Jobs:
1. Modified Interlock 8101 :description: Actuation of the interlock is by low low flow (2oo3) of the
individual pass combined with high high outlet Temperature (2oo3) of the same pass.
Accordingly,Note-2 and Note-14 stands updated (Refer Annexure-02).
combined with high high Temperature (2oo3) of the same pass.Accordingly,Note-2 and Note-14
is updated (Refer Annexure-01).
2. Modified Interlock 8104 description : Actuation of interlock is by Low low flow of minimum two
pass of a multipass Heater or low total flow of multi pass heater.
.Accordingly,
Note-2 and Scheme signals are updated (i.e calculation block requirement for this
interlock is deleted.
As the calculation block doesnot provide clarity, Note-16 is updated and Note-19 added for this
Interlock (Refer Annexure-02).
Note-19
is added for this Interlock (Refer Annexure-01).
4. Notes : Note-14 and Note-16 is updated and Note-19 added ((Refer Annexure-01)) complying
OISD requirement is added. The above updations are carried out to make the interlocks of legend
PID compliant with OISD requirement and same shall be considered as a standard updations of
legend PID.
