During my many years at the University of Detroit Mercy, I have received the
generous support of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and of
the College of Engineering and Science. In the Chemistry Department I enjoyed
the friendship of the department chair and all faculty colleagues and
appreciated the help of the department office.
To them this book is dedicated.

Preface
Toyota Mirai (“future” in Japanese) is on sale in Japan since April 15, 2015, and
in California in summer 2015, for $57,500. The Mirai has a 300‐mile range,
and filling up with fuel (hydrogen) takes <5 min. As a symbol of changed
opinions, DOE has recently released a video showing the Energy Secretary
Ernest Moniz test‐driving the Toyota Mirai.
Honda presented the FC concept car, with predicted sales of 1000/year for the
coming years.
The Hyundai Tucson is currently available for about $500/month in California,
including free fuel (hydrogen). Moreover, DOE has announced in October
2015 that the first commercially available, zero‐emission FC SUV is sold in
Europe and Korea and is leased in California to all consumers.
General Motors has partnered with Honda to reduce even further the cost of FC
vehicles. Honda started selling its first FC car, the Clarity, in December 2016.
The hydrogen economy relies on the existence of hydrogen to provide the fuel.
The state of California and automakers has encouraged the development of
hydrogen fueling stations. The number of stations is expected to rise to 50 by
the end of 2017. California officials predict that about 13,000 hydrogen cars
will be in operation by 2019. FC cars can operate to about 300 miles on a full
tank, and filling can take only a few minutes. By comparison, battery electric
vehicles are limited to about 200 miles before a recharge is needed, and charging
can take 4 h or more.
This book tells the story of extraordinary advances that occurred in the last
10 years on the topic “Towards the Hydrogen Economy,” and the story will be
told by the groups that made the progress possible.
A major part of the story is focused on the proton exchange membrane (PEM),
which is an essential part of an FC, and its role is crucial: to separate the
cathode and anode compartments, allow efficient proton transport from
the anode to the cathode, and block the flow of reduced oxygen species from the
cathode to the anode. The most commonly used PEMs for hydrogen and direct
methanol FCs are perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) ionomers based on a Teflon‐like
