Literature Review
Author : Priyanka Shahane
The literature review focuses on the application of machine learning algorithms in predicting and
analyzing campus placements.
The purpose is to understand the methodologies, variables, and algorithms used in the paper for
predicting campus placements. The scope includes the dataset used, feature selection, and
machine learning algorithms applied.
The review is organized into the following sections: Background and Context, Theoretical
Framework, Research Gap Identification, Methodology, Main Themes and Trends, Synthesis and
Analysis, Discussion, and Conclusion.
2. Theoretical Framework:
This paper focuses on using machine learning algorithms like Logistic Regression, Decision Tree,
and K-NN for predicting campus placements. Logistic Regression is used for binary
classification, Decision Trees for feature selection, and K-NN for classifying data based on
similarity measures.
The study also integrates machine learning principles for feature selection and data pre-
processing, making the study multidisciplinary and comprehensive in its approach.
4. Methodology:
I began my search on IEEE Xplore, focusing on machine learning applications in educational
settings, particularly campus placements.
The paper by Priyanka Shahane was chosen because it offers a comprehensive approach to
campus placement predictions, including data pre-processing, feature selection, and machine
learning algorithms.
5. Main Themes and Trends:
The paper specifically mentions that the Logistic Regression algorithm gave the highest accuracy
of 95.34% for campus placements prediction. It also suggests that accuracy may further increase
by the application of more advanced techniques such as deep learning.
Another significant theme is data pre-processing, which includes handling missing values and
converting categorical data to numerical form.
The paper's strength lies in its robust methodology, which includes handling missing values and
categorical data, However, the paper is limited by its dataset size and scope, focusing only on a
specific set of features.
The paper successfully integrates various machine learning algorithms and data pre-processing
techniques.
7. Discussion:
The paper highlights the importance of data cleaning, such as handling missing values and
mapping categorical variables to numerical ones, thereby enhancing the model's performance.
It doesn't address the limitations of the dataset used, such as potential biases or the scope of the
data.
The paper doesn't engage with existing debates or disagreements within the literature on machine
learning or campus placements.
Conclusion:
Shahane's paper enriches the understanding of machine learning's role in predicting campus
placements. This comprehensive approach offers a refined understanding of how various factors
impact the accuracy of placement predictions.
Accuracy may further increase by application of more advanced techniques such as deep learning
& experimenting with different activation functions of neural networks such as linear, sigmoid,
tan h & ReLU.
