TECHNICAL MOMENT
Project Facts:
• Bhopal Metro comprises of two lines viz. Line 2 with a total length 16.05 km and 14 elevated stations and 2
underground stations and Line 5 with a total length 12.99 km and 14 elevated stations.
• Indore Metro i.e. Line 3 is an arterial ring line connecting the vital points of the city with a total length 31.28 km,
23 elevated stations and 6 underground stations.
Services:
• General Consultancy services including design/ design review, proof checking, procurement, construction
Supervision, system integration, Command control system, testing & commissioning
Traction Factors considered for adopting 750 V DC
System for
Bhopal & Third Rail system for Indore & Bhopal
Indore Metro
TRACTION SYSTEMS
AC Traction DC Traction
• 25kV, 1-Phase, 50 Hz
• 15kV, 1-Phase, 16.7 Hz 2x25kV,
50Hz • 600V, 750V, 1.5kV, 3kV etc.
• Invariably with overhead • With overhead conductor or
conductor due to very high third rail
voltage • Most common is 750V with
• Most Predominant is 25kV, 1- third rail
Phase, 50 Hz

Traction Advantages and Disadvantages of DC Traction
System for
Bhopal & Advantages
Indore Metro
1. Aesthetically superior for elevated sections
2. Maintenance & life cycle cost lesser
3. No impact of storm
4. More reliable & maintenance free
5. Less tunnel cost in UG lines
Dis-advantages
1. Capacity to cater traffic is less than AC
traction
2. Higher losses due to high current
3. Closer substation interval, increasing the
cost of sub-stations
4. Phenomena of Stray current & low levels of
regeneration
5. High installation cost

Traction Safety for Passengers & Maintenance Staff
System for ▪ In case of emergency evacuation of passengers during any emergency, the evacuation door of
Bhopal & Rolling stocks will only be opened when the third rail is in discharged & earthed condition.
Indore Metro
▪ At platform area platform screen doors have been provisioned for passenger safety against
falling of any passenger on track.
▪ Complete third rail system has been covered with UPVC covers in order to avoid any direct
contact with energized third rail system.
▪ High Speed circuit breakers have been installed for feeding 750V DC power supply to Third Rail
which will trip the system in milli seconds to safeguard system as well as human life incase of
any eventuality.
▪ At station platform, insulation membrane has been provided to avoid any potential difference
between rolling stock & platform to safeguard the passengers from electric shock during
boarding or de-boarding.
▪ Emergency Trip Switches have been provisioned at platforms ends to trip the third rail system
instantly in case of any eventuality.
Traction Ethics Aspect
System for
Bhopal &
Indore Metro ▪ Taking into account the financing of this metro project using public
funds, we have deliberately chosen the most cost-effective solution
for the Power-supply and Traction components.
▪ Our decision considers both the initial installation costs and the
ongoing maintenance expenses. Additionally, the design of these
components has been thoughtfully planned to align with aesthetic
and environmental standards within the project area.
