Hacking Learning Centers in Grades 6-12: How to Design Small-Group Instruction to Foster Active Learning, Shared Leadership, and Student Accountability
As a future educator, I consider a plain classroom conducive to learning. A plain classroom without charts, bookshelves, no wall paintings and free from obstructions such as excess chairs. In order for our students to gain knowledge during the learning process, we must set their environment as neat as possible. With this environment, we can help them in enhancing their imaginations and not limiting them on what’s visible around them. We must also consider the spaces of the chairs of our students to help them in avoiding chitchatting and to give them a classroom that is well-ventilated. A well- ventilated classroom and an organize chairs of the students will help them to remain focused during discussions. In terms of the strategies, I will also imply the reward scheme, verbal reinforcements, praise, point system, group works and enhancing vocabulary through the use of dictionary. The reward scheme, praise and verbal reinforcements will be utilized to uplift and develop the self-confidence and self-esteem of the students to express their ideas and opinions to a certain topic during discussions. On the other hand, the point system and the group works will promote collaborative learning. The students will be taught how to work as a group and to contribute what they know to improve the performance of their own groups. In addition, the use of the traditional dictionary will help the students in enhancing their vocabulary in a traditional way and to teach them not to be dependent on modern gadgets. In terms of security and a supportive learning environment, I will observe my limits as a teacher but I will do my best to help and assist my students to cope on the things that are hard for them. As a teacher, we must first assess their capabilities and make remedies to solve deficiencies. We must also be considerate on their situations therefore; background checking is a must. We must be a teacher and at the same time, we must be a human with humility. We must give them an avenue where they can express themselves and to support them on the things that makes them happy. We must show them that we, their teachers, are worth trusting for; to make both the learning and teaching process successful.
