6 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

6.1 General

1) The lowest rating of hv motors shall normally be approximately 200kW. In special cases a lower rating may be used.
2) This specification is concerned with the motor and its essential attachments, and is generally specified as such in IEC 60034-1
for type of duty S1. A continuous running duty of type S1 shall be the minimum acceptable level.
3) All motors, including the variable speed driven motors shall be capable of being started direct-on-line, and operating
continuously at its nameplate rating at the given ambient conditions.
4) The motors may be required to be operated in conjunction with a Variable Speed Drive System (VSD) in which harmonic

6) Induction motors shall be suitable for restart with full opposite residual voltage, under full load conditions, and at any voltage
between 80% and 100% of the rated voltage applied at the motor terminals.

Note:
The above requirement should result in a high quality motor design with respect to stator end-winding support, fit of rotor
active iron core to shaft and the support of the stator active iron core in the motor housing. The shaft and coupling design
shall be based on the maximum transient torques that can be expected in the case of a two or three-phase short circuit at
the motor terminals.

7) It may be assumed that the power interruption will not exceed 0.2 second and that the driven machine will exhibit a quadratic
torque-speed characteristic. If the manufacturer is unable to meet this requirement then he should describe in the tender
documents what limiting conditions apply in the design.
8) For special applications, where the driven machine exhibits a different torque-speed characteristic, the manufacturer shall
provide in the tender documentation information regarding the re-acceleration ability of the motor with respect to above power
interruption and its time duration. These requirements are not applicable to reciprocating compressors or other loads
exhibiting a constant torque characteristic once they have been brought up to full speed and loaded.
9) Different requirements may apply to a motor that is supplied through a unit transformer. In this situation the design of the
motor-transformer combination should be optimized with respect to maximum allowable voltage drop at the supply bus bar,
and to the start and restart performance of the motor.
10) Aluminium shall not be used for any part of the motor, except the cooling fan.

considered.
5) In the situation where OXY or the driven equipment manufacturer specifies no shaft-end design, then the manufacturer of the
motor shall indicate in the tender documents the proposed design.
6) For motors intended to drive loads directly, which require a variable torque during each revolution, e.g. reciprocating
compressors, the shaft end design and coupling should be similar to the driven equipment.
7) If the motor is a direct replacement of an existing one and is the same basic design then there is no need for comprehensive
balancing, a check balance of the rotor with its original half-coupling in place is recommended.

6.20 Bearings

1) Manufacturer’s standard range of bearings shall be offered for evaluation with the tender.
2) Manufacturer shall endeavor to provide grease lubricated Ball and roller element bearings as far as practically possible. Forced
lubricated oil sleeve bearings shall be avoided to the extent possible.
