WATER
SCARCITY
❖ More than 330 million people are WATER THREATS IN
affected due to water scarcity as INDIA
half of the nation’s land are prone to
drought like conditions.

❖ The annual per capita water

availability is below 1500 cubic
metres as per record by Indian
government.

❖ 12% of population , majority of them

living in metropolitan cities like
Chennai, Bengaluru, Delhi and
Hyderabad are already affected
and their water supplies come to a
halt.
❖ The factors that causes water
scarcity in india are poor
infrastructures of water distribution
systems, high usage of water in
irrigation, climate change etc. SLIDE-2

1. CHEMICAL CONTAMINATION OF
WATER ,MAINLY THROUGH
FLOURIDE AND ARSENIC IS
PRESENT IN 1.96 MILLION
DWELLINGS.

2. LESS THAN 50% OF THE

POPULATION HAS ACCESS TO
SAFELY MANAGED DRINKI NG
WATER.

3. MOREOVER, TWO-THIRDS OF
INDIA 718 DISTRICTS ARE
AFFECTED BY EXTREME WATER
DEPLETION AND THE CURRENT
LACK OF SAFETY AND SECURITY

WATER SUPPLY
One of the major problem arises due to
Human intervention

SLIDE-13
❖ Water quality has deteriorated in most
receiving bodies and in shallow
groundwater as a result of uncontrolled
discharge of raw domestic and industrial
waste-water.

❖ Most households, forced to cope with poor

quality water supply and sanitation service,
spend time and money on expensive and
unsafe substitutes, costing much higher
than their monthly water bills.

❖ The inefficiencies in services and costs are

passed on to customers, with the poor
suffering the most.

SOME GOVERNMENT MEASURES TO DEAL WATER SCARCITY

❖ The government of India launched Jal Shakti Abhiyan (JSA) in

2019, a time-bound campaign with a mission mode
approach intended to improve water availability including
groundwater conditions in the water-stressed blocks of 256
districts in India.

❖ National Water Policy (2012) has been formulated by Department

of Water Resources, RD & GR, inter-alia advocates rainwater
harvesting and conservation of water and highlights the need for
augmenting the availability of water through direct use of rainfall.

❖ Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA) has been constituted

under Section 3 (3) of the “Environment (Protection) Act, 1986”
for the purpose of regulation and control of groundwater
development and management in the Country. CGWA has advised
States/UTs to take measures to promote and adopt artificial
recharge to groundwater and rainwater harvesting.
