QUESTION 1

a. Discuss the relevance of Transformers in the Electric Power System Network.

NB: consider all the various types of transformers.

b. Explain any two maintenance procedures on a distribution transformer and state its

relevance.

c. Briefly explain the operation of a Tap Changing Transformer and discuss any two of

its applications in a grid network.

QUESTION 2

a. The primary of a certain transformer takes 1 A at a power factor of 0.4 when connected

across a 230 V, 50 Hz supply and the secondary is on open circuit. The number of turns

on the primary is twice that on the secondary. A load of 50 A at a lagging power factor

of 0.8 is now connected across the secondary.

i. Sketch, and explain briefly, the phasor diagram for this condition, neglecting

voltage drops in the transformer.

ii. What is now the value of the primary current?

b. The HV side of the transformer is now connected to a 2300 V supply and a load is

connected to LV side. The load is such that rated current flows through the transformer,

and the supply factor is unity. Determine the

i. load impedance

ii. load voltage

iii. voltage regulation

QUESTION 3

a. What is the leakage flux in a transformer? Why is it modeled in a transformer equivalent

circuit as an inductor?

b. A 15-kVA 8000 / 230 -V distribution transformer has an impedance referred to the

primary of 80 + j300 Ω. The components of the excitation branch referred to the

primary side are Rc = 350 kΩ and Xm = 70 k Ω.

i. If the primary voltage is 7967 V and the load impedance is ZL = 3.0 + j1.5 Ω. What

is the secondary voltage of the transformer? What is the voltage regulation of the

transformer?

ii. If the load is disconnected and a capacitor of - j4.0 Ω is connected in its place. What

is the secondary voltage of the transformer? What is its voltage regulation under

these conditions?
