Course Learning Outcomes (CLO)

At the end of the course, students should be able to:

1. Explain cost elements in product and service costing systems.


2. Analyze changes in costs and volume using CVP analysis.
3. Demonstrate communication skills to address issues in management accounting.

Course Description

This course introduces principles and methods of management accounting at operational


level. Emphasis is on cost concepts: job costing/billing, process costing and activity-based
costing as well as decision making concepts: absorption costing versus marginal costing
and the cost-volume-profit analysis.

1.0 Management Accounting

• Nature and purpose of internal reporting


• Requirements for management information
• Differences between management accounting and financial accounting

2.0 Cost Concepts and Classifications

• Cost for different purposes


• Manufacturing Costs
• Cost Estimations – Traditional Overhead and Activity Based Costing

3.0 Product & Service Costing System

• Job Costing (no computation)


• Contract Costing (no computation)
• Process Costing
• Characteristics of process costing
• Normal losses, abnormal losses, abnormal gain
• Scrap and Waste
• Output fully complete
• Output not fully complete
• Joint Products and By-Products
• Apportionment of joint cost using volume/weight and net realizable value

• Rationale for absorption costing and marginal costing


• Product costs using the absorption costing method and the marginal costing
• Compare and contrast the use of AC and MC for profit reporting and inventory
valuation
• Reconcile the profits reported by AC and MC
