Lifting Operations

It is very essential to improve awareness and to ensure a good understanding of the risks
associated with crane lifting operations. This helps to reduce the number of incidents, save
lives and prevent serious property damage and loss.

Recommendations for Safe Lifting Operations:

Planning Ahead

category (i.e., standard and critical).
 Crane operators must be competent for the task and understand safe crane operations.
 Riggers and banksmen must be competent and authorized to perform lifting tasks.
 Crane operators and Riggers must know and use the correct lifting signals.
 Competent lifting supervisor must conduct a visual inspection of the entire lifting area prior to each lift.

Safety Tips

Inspection and Operation

 Cranes must not be assembled or used unless the ground is level and compacted to safely carry the
total weight of the crane and load.
 The crane's outriggers are always to be fully extended and at least 1 meter away from manholes and
excavations/trenches.
 Lifting operations must not begin unless all safety devices and lifting and rigging equipment are
2
inspected and in proper working order.
 Ensure tires, wind-screens, mirrors, reversing alarms and the like are well maintained and operational.
 Use correctly rated slings that are thoroughly inspected and color coded.
 Always ensure the load is appropriately balanced and never overloaded.
 Barricade the entire crane operations swing area to keep unauthorized persons from entering the lift
area.
 Always check for overhead power lines and other obstructions.
 Never leave the load suspended without supervision.
 STOP the crane operation when the wind speed exceeds the safe operating level recommended in the
manufacturer's specification or EM385-1-1 requirements.
 Provide a safe loading/unloading surface area appropriately compacted to carry the weight and load of
the vehicles.
 Never allow any person to pass or work under a suspended load.
 Ensure provision of adequate lighting during a dark hour lifting and loading/unloading activity.
 Always use tagline to control the load.
 Lift loose objects inside lifting buckets.
 Obtain lifting permit and adhere to the permit conditions.
 STARRT to be conducted with the lifting team prior to any lifting activities.
