Tripping Checklist

General Tripping

 Review the reasons for making the trip and to discuss them with the Rig
Team and the Drilling Office.

 Verify the drilling program tripping requirements for each hole section.

 Develop plans for future flat time operations, reviewing requirement for
additional personnel, and for the next trip-in-hole.

 Review variable deck load and space requirements, may need to lay down
pipe.

 Ensure that proper handling tools are readily available and inspect the
condition of the tools, i.e.:

1. Slips, elevators, tongs, hoists, lay down equipment

2. Mudsavers, safety clamps, air spinners

3. Crossovers, handling subs.

 Perform Toolbox meeting, discuss any special procedures, precautions

required, operational highlights, possible unexpected events and review
previous tripping in this section, or offset wells.

 Review the torque and drag information from previous trips and drilling.

 Ensure that the Driller is aware of maximum overpull allowed before

commencing any backreaming. This to be included in guidelines for
backreaming such as torque and drag range and for pump rates for optimum
hole cleaning.

 Function test BOP equipment, if necessary.

 Ensure to flush the trip tank at the beginning of each shift. Keep 15 to 20 bbl
in the trip tank at all times. If there is a float in the tank, ensure that it is
cleaned regularly.

 Review the well kill criteria. Refer to: Kick Tolerance (IPM-WELL-S009)

 Review the flow checking requirements

 Review lay down procedures, if required.

 Verify swab and surge criteria and develop running speed guidelines.

 Detail hole fill requirements and displacement expectations in preparing a trip

sheet.

 Develop requirements for mudchecks, mud weight and mud properties.

 Develop criteria for tour change during tripping, remembering that many
unscheduled events occur during crew change periods.

 Ensure that the safety valves for DP and DC on the rig floor in open position.

 Ensure that bit, motor, if required, etc. has been checked and is ready to run
back in the hole.

 Check for proper operation of fill-up measuring equipment.

 Use a pipe wiper and mud saver bucket, if necessary. Scrape off any excess
mud or gumbo.

 Confirm pipe movement effects, check V-door tail rope for length, defects,
etc. Replace if necessary.

 Calibrate rig floor equipment, torque gauges, weight indicator, etc.

 Calibrate all monitoring and safety equipment around the entire rig.

 As required and when possible, ensure that work such as slip and cut drill
line and servicing the top drive to be done with the bit near the shoe.

 Set slips 30” below tool joint.

 Alternate breaks on every trip.

 Change out stand of drill pipe above BHA on every trip.

Pre Trip

 Verify and review any hole conditioning requirements per the drilling
program, or any other source, i.e. logging program, cementing program, etc.

 Ensure that before tripping that to at least bottoms up, to condition mud
and/or remove any connection gas, as required.

 Ensure to reciprocate and rotate the drill pipe while circulating bottoms up.
Tripping_Checklist - IPM
 Ensure that there are normal hole conditions (torque and drag) before
tripping. Report on morning report.

 Prepare for pumping any pills or loss circulation materials.

 Ensure additional slugs or pills are ready for immediate use, if necessary, to
ensure well safety during the trip.

 With the pumps off, observe the well for flow before pumping the slug and
beginning to pull out of the hole.

 Mud density in and out should not differ by more than 0.2 ppg.

 Monitor the initial circulating returns with particular attention to the types of
solids.

 Clear rig floor and deck of unnecessary equipment.

 Verify that the tripping equipment is ready, i.e. mud savers, handling tools,
etc.

 Adjust mud weight for required trip margin plus the loss of ECD's, if
necessary.

 Verify that the trip tank is initially clean and calibrated and then fill as
required.

 Ensure the mud utilized to fill the trip tank is of the correct density.

 Sand trap and all mud pits should already be cleaned prior to running casing.
Do not by-pass desilter, desander, and use all solids control equipment
during the hole conditioning until the shale shaker is clean. If necessary
sweep the hole with hi-vis pills.

 Verify that returns are clean and mud properties are correct as per the drilling
program or other criteria.

 Check and record all levels in mud tanks, that valves are properly lined up
and that transfer pumps are operational.

 Well control drills should be held at least once every trip while in cased hole.

 Consider a pit drill.

 Highlight prompts for jarring actions. Refer to: Stuck Pipe Avoidance
Guidelines.

Tripping Out

 The Well Site Supervisor or Rig Superintendent must be on the rig floor for
the commencement of all trips. He is to remain on the floor for a minimum of
fifteen stands and ensure the well is taking correct fill up volume. If well is
not taking proper fill up volume at any time, pipe will be run back to bottom,
and the well circulated bottoms up.

 Utilize the trip tank to fill the hole and monitor the actual displacement of the
drill string. This should be compared to the calculated displacement to
determine whether the hole is taking the proper amount of fluid. Record the
decrease or increase in volume on the trip sheet or hole fill sheet.
Immediately investigate any deviation from the calculated value and be
prepared to close-in or divert if the well is kicking.

 Review pumping and backreaming out criteria and communicate to the

Toolpusher / Driller, to include GPM, RPM, hoist speed, overpull allowed,
etc.

 Verify proper placement of slugs.

 Again, briefly review requirements for well vigilance during crew changes,
proper and crew change notes and other pertinent information.

 Ensure that limits are set to allowable overpull before requiring to go back
down.

 Control trip speed to avoid surging or swabbing the hole.

 Recheck displacement criteria with a trip schedule while monitoring for

trends.

 Ensure that breaks on stands are alternated between trips.

 Verify any staging or special pill placement criteria.

 Ensure that driller is to notify of any problem during the trip.

 Ensure to highlight prompts for jarring.

 Ensure that a wiper rubber is used.

 Check floats on the trips

 Ensure to install a safety valve if the trip is interrupted. The valve is to be left
open to monitor the well while circulating over the hole via the trip tank.

 Ensure that the drill pipe is moved as much as possible while in open hole.

 Once out of the hole, confirm that it is filled and the blind rams are open.
Monitor it on the trip tank with the trip tank pump running. Record on
morning report.

 The Driller must not leave the rig floor during his tour unless properly
relieved. Relief must have valid Industry Recognized Well Control
certification.

 Once out of the hole, ensure that the Mudlogger resets all alarms and
continuously monitors the trip tank and notifies the Driller of any discrepancy.

 Do NOT use the blind rams as a hole cover, if it is desirable to close the
blind/shear rams while out of the hole, reduce the operating (manifold)
pressure as low as possible to avoid extruding the elastomer in the
blind/shear rams

Tripping In

 Again, briefly review requirements for well vigilance during crew changes,
proper and crew change notes and other pertinent information.

 Ensure that all bits and stabilizers are gauged before running back in the
hole. Refer to the BHA Checklist.

 Ensure that all special equipment is tested i.e. motors, MWD, etc., at the
surface and at other dedicated depths such as casing shoes, etc.

 Ensure that all tong make up/breakout, snub lines, shackles, slips, elevators
and other handling equipment are in good shape and rigged up for tongs to
be used

 Ensure to monitor the well on the trip tank.

 Ensure that the drill pipe is filled and circulation is broken at regular intervals.

 Ensure that running speed is limited to avoid excessive fluid losses.

 Ensure that a trip schedule is monitored, noting the trends.

 Ensure that any excessive hold-up/torque is recorded.

Tripping_Checklist - IPM
 Control trip speed to avoid surging or swabbing the hole.

 Ensure that the Driller is to report immediately any problem during the trip.
Any hole problems should be recorded, along with depths in the IADC report.

 Highlight prompts for jarring actions.

 Ensure that after reaching bottom, establish normal circulation rate. Read
and record the circulation pressure from the standpipe gage. If trip gas
causes a pit level gain, it should be handled in the same manner as that
used for handling a kick.

 Ensure that on connections when breaking circulation, or when on bottom,

that the pumps are brought on slowly. If possible, establish rotation before
breaking circulation and circulate bottoms up before recommencing drilling.

 Ensure that slow circulating rates (SCR) are taken before drilling proceeds,
with pressures taken from the choke panel.
