Danger
Risk from electric shock, explosion, or arc flash

●● Only those who have been properly trained, understand this manual and all the
other documents of related products, and who have received safety training and
can identify and avoid hazards are permitted to operate and use the VSD system.
The system may only be installed, debugged, operated and maintained by qualified
personnel.
●● The system integrator is responsible for compliance with all local and national electrical codes on
equipment grounding and all the other applicable regulations.
●● Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
●● Many parts of this product, including printed circuit boards, work with power. Do not touch them
by hand. Only use electrically insulated tools.
●● Do not touch unshielded components or terminals with power.
●● Motor generates energy when motor shaft rotates. Lock the motor shaft to prevent rotation before
working on the VSD system.
●● AC voltage makes unused conductors in motor cable generate voltage. Make sure the unused
conductors in motor cable are properly insulated at both ends.
●● Before operating the VSD, pay attention to the followings:
-- Cut off power supply, including possible external control power supply;
-- Hang the “No switch on” sign on all high-voltage incoming line switch cabinets;
-- Pull the trolley of the high-voltage incoming line switch cabinet out of the cabinet or lock it in
“Disconnected” position;
-- Wait for 20 minutes until the module’s DC bus capacitor is completely discharged. The fact
that the red LED on each module goes out does not mean that the DC bus is de-energized.
-- When the red LEDs on one or more modules are still “On” after the main power is
disconnected for 20 minutes already:
-- Do not attempt to disassemble, repair or operate the equipment.
-- Please contact local representative of the manufacturer.
●● Always check whether the power is off by using an appropriate voltage detection device each time
after the power supply is disconnected.
●● All components must be installed before turning on power. Make sure the cabinet is correctly
installed and all cabinet doors are closed.

Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury or death.

2.3.7 Check
This section summarizes the necessary checks before the VSD is powered on.
Steps Description
Check whether power supply of the VSD meets relevant requirements. Rated input voltage of the VSD shall
1 be the same as that of power grid. If on-site voltage is too high, the input line can be connected to the +5%
tap.
2 Maximum output voltage of the VSD shall match the rated voltage marked on the nameplate of the motor.
3 Control voltage (low voltage) must match the rated control voltage of the VSD.
4 The rated power on the nameplate of the motor must match the rated power of the VSD.
Check whether the cables between the transformer cabinet and power cell cabinet which are separated for
5
the convenience of transportation have been correctly and firmly reconnected.
All cabinets shall be reliably connected to the factory ground with grounding resistance less than 4 ohms.
6 The controller shall be equipped with a dedicated grounding electrode with grounding resistance less than 1
ohm, which shall be hung in the air on the site where it is impossible to bury the electrode.
Check the cables at separation points and/or gaps. Make sure there is no exposed conductor due to
7
scratches or improper transportation.
Check whether all terminal blocks, fixing elements, cells and other sub-components area marked or labeled.
8
Notify Leader & Harvest Electric if there is any discrepancy.
Make sure the control power and mains power are normal and correctly connected and conform to local
9
electrical regulations.
10 Check whether all wires are connected tightly and correctly.
Check whether the bolts for fixing the isolator and operating mechanism of the bypass cabinet (purchased
11 separately) are loose. Make sure the edges are not too loose or too tight and in good connection, and the
isolator is tight and closes in right position. Mechanical interlocking between switches works well.

BLH B01-070.6 EN 04/2020 21

Installation and Maintenance Manual for
Chapter II
HARSVERT VSD

Check whether high-voltage input and output cables are connected correctly. Pay more attention to multi-
12
loop system.
Check whether the bolts for electrical connection at input points, output points and neutralpoints of the
13
transformer are fastened firmly. Wiring must be correct.
14 Check whether temperature probe is at the right depth and take effective fixing measures.
Make sure the cooling fan on the top of the cabinet is connected correctly and tightly with the fan rotating
15
freely in the correct direction.
Check whether the bolts for fixing the output line of the transformer, the side wall of the power cell cabinet,
and the three-phase incoming line of the power cell are fastened firmly.
16
Note: to verify whether the wiring is correct, the upper end of the module fuse can be measured with the
resistance scale of multimeter. If RS, RT and ST are all 0, the wiring is correct.
Check whether the input and output optical fibers are connected correctly (the fiber head shall be inserted
into the fiber seat of the right color, and the cells shall be connected to the wire of the right number). The
17 optical fiber and fiber head shall be tightly connected by means of crimping, and the fiber head and fiber
seat shall be clean and firmly connected. The length of the optical fiber shall be just right without pulling and
dead bending.
All screws used for wiring and cable connections shall be fastened firmly. The printed boards shall be inserted
18
into the right place in the control box, and the screws for fixing the panel and control box shall be fastened.
Check whether the analog signal introducing the VSD on site is signal without power (4 - 20 mA) or (0- 10 V).
19 Signal with extra power is not allowed. Also check whether the analog signal of the VSD is only connected to
the weak circuit of the user.
Check whether the output nodes of the VSD and the nodes supplied for the VSD on site are passive. The
20
nodes shall be separated from strong current, and wired correctly and firmly.
Table 2-1 Checks on VSD before Energization
Note: if the results of the above checks are inconsistent or abnormal, debug the VSD and notify the
manufacturer.

Danger
Risk of electric shock from improper grounding
●● Improper or incorrect grounding may result in electric shock and subsequent serious injury, or
even death under certain circumstances.
●● Make sure the VSD system is properly grounded before the power is turned on.
●● Make sure the grounding practice complies with all local and national regulations on electrical
equipment grounding and other applicable regulations.
●● Do not use wiring tube as protective grounding conductor.
●● Make sure the cross-sectional area of protective grounding conductor complies with applicable
standards.

3.3 Analysis of fault causes

3.3.1 Control power abnormal

●● Control power is abnormal
-- Explanation: the loss of DC 220V power at input side of control system.
-- Cause analysis: the loss of input power; short-circuit; short-circuit in cable; air switch on the
control cabinet of the VSD trips; air switch trips because of short-circuit in the control system.

24 BLH B01-070.6 EN 04/2020

Installation and Maintenance Manual for
Chapter III
HARSVERT VSD

3.3.2 Power cell fault

●● Over-voltage
-- Explanation: the DC bus voltage of the power cells exceeds the internal setting value.
-- Cause analysis: the grid-side voltage is too high or transient voltage fluctuates greatly in positive
direction; the over-voltage setting value of control board of power cell drifts; the control board
fails; power cells in the same phase have no output due to faults and are not in bypass operation,
which leads to high DC bus voltage of the power cells; optical fiber board of main control box or
main control panel fails; load fluctuates greatly; too short deceleration time causes over-voltage;
positive fluctuation of input voltage of the VSD system (except for the circumstances agreed with
the user).

●● Under-voltage
-- Explanation: the DC bus voltage of the power cells is lower than internal setting value.
-- Cause analysis: the grid-side voltage is too low or grid-side transient voltage fluctuates greatly
in negative direction; the high voltage switch trips; the under-voltage setting value of control
board of power cell drifts; the control board fails; rectifying circuit at input side of the power cells
fails; main control box or optical fiber board fails.
-- Negative fluctuation of input voltage of the VSD system (except for the circumstances agreed
with the user).

●● Phase loss
-- Explanation: the voltage at input side of the power cells is lower than phase loss setting value.
-- Cause analysis: the fuse at input side of the power cells fails; phase loss at grid side; the
connection bolts at secondary side of rectifier transformer are not properly fastened; the three-
phase incoming lines of the power cells are loose or not properly connected.

●● Drive fault
-- Explanation: “drive fault” refers to the increase in tube voltage drop (10 - 15 V) due to
increased current (more than 6 - 7 times), or the fault occurs when module power supply on
driver board is damaged with IGBT open.
-- Cause analysis: short-circuit discharge inside the power cells; IGBT in abnormal condition;
short-circuit at output side; output cable is damaged; output bolt is overheated or not properly
fastened and ignited; unit control board or driver board fails; detection circuit is disturbed.

●● Overheating
-- Explanation: the temperature of the power device in power cells exceeds the internal setting
value.
-- Cause analysis: ambient temperature exceeds allowable value; fans on power cell cabinet do not
operate normally; air inlet and outlet are blocked; the device runs at overload for a long time;
temperature relay of power cells fails; unit control board fails or terminal is in poor contact.
-- Addition: if the VSD system operates in a dusty environment, the user shall clean the dust filter
on the cabinet door regularly. If the ambient temperature exceeds the allowable value, it is
recommended to install air conditioner and ventilation equipment.

3.3.3 Transformer over temperature

-- Explanation: if the temperature of one phase of the transformer exceeds preset alarm
temperature, over-temperature alarm will be sent. over-heat protection temperature of the
transformer is 95° C .
-- Cause analysis: the fan on the top of the transformer cabinet fails or stops; the air inlet and
outlet are blocked; temperature probe is disconnected; the overheat alarm parameters of
the temperature controller are irrational, or the temperature controller fails; the insulation of
secondary wiring of the transformer is damaged or shorted out; the equipment runs at overload
for a long time; the ambient temperature is too high.

3.3.4 Analog input loss

-- Explanation: given analog signal 4 - 20 mA is lower than preset minimum value (generally 2 mA)
-- Cause analysis: field given control signal fails; or poor contact in junction; or analog input
module of PLC fails.

3.3.5 Cabinet door open

BLH B01-070.6 EN 04/2020 25

Installation and Maintenance Manual for
Chapter III
HARSVERT VSD

-- Explanation: doors (with risks from high voltage) of power cell cabinet, transformer cabinet or
bypass cabinet are open.
-- Cause analysis: the cabinet doors are not firmly shut; position switch is damaged; wire is loose;
aviation plug is abnormal.

3.3.6 Transformer serious overheating

-- Explanation: serious overheating node of temperature controller of the transformer is closed.
-- Cause analysis: poor insulation of the secondary wiring of the transformer; the equipment runs
at overload; the ambient temperature is too high; the cooling fan of the transformer is abnormal;
the air path is blocked; the temperature probe of the transformer is not firmly connected or
disconnected; the temperature controller fails; the overheat protection parameters of the
temperature controller are irrational or have been illegally reset or modified. The default over-
heat protection temperature of the transformer is 110° C .
-- Refer to 3.3.7 for checks and setup of overheat protection parameters of the temperature
controller.

3.3.7 Overload, load over-current, VSD over-current

-- Explanation: the output current of the VSD exceeds the internal setting current. Overload means
that the output current of the VSD exceeds “the multiple of serious overload current”, and the
time exceeds “serious overload timing”. Load over- current means that the output current of
the VSD exceeds “over-current protection value of VSD”, requiring instantaneous protection.
VSD over- current (hardware setting): the actual output current exceeds set value of hardware
circuit of the main control panel. Default over-current level of hardware is 200% of rated value.
-- Cause analysis: hardware detection circuit of main control panel fails or the set value drifts;
detection circuit of signal adjusting panel fails; Hall current sensor fails; poor contact between
Hall current sensor and interface board; software detection parameters of the VSD are
inappropriate; motor overload; major fault in power cells; cables from VSD output to motor fail
or the screws of output wiring cabinet are burnt out, which further causes phase loss; motor fault
(locked rotor and inter-turn short circuit).

3.4 How to Replace a Faulty Power Cell

●● All power cells in the same VSD are exactly the same. If one cell does not work properly due to
faults, it can be replaced with a spare one after the VSD system is out of service. Replace the faulty
power cell as follows:

3.5 Other Problems

3.5.1 Frequency adjustment invalid

Operation frequency setting method of the VSD system is set by human-machine interface, independent
of external and internal control modes of the VSD. If the user cannot modify the operation frequency with
the external analog potentiometer, it may be because the frequency setting method is set as “computer
preset” in the interface. If the user cannot set the operation frequency in the human-machine interface,
it may be because the frequency setting method is set as “analog preset” in the human-machine
interface. In addition, if the VSD is set to closed loop mode in human-machine interface, only PID
regulator can adjust the operation frequency, which cannot be set by the user. What the user can set by
using external analog potentiometer or the human-machine interface is only the expected value of the
controlled industrial variable.
If the VSD cannot reach the preset frequency, perhaps it is because the frequency preset by the
user exceeds the highest and lowest limits or falls within hopping frequency range. If the VSD stops
automatically every time after reaching a high frequency, it is because the user sets the operation mode
to soft start in the human- machine interface.

3.5.2 Medium-voltage VSD system cannot be started

The VSD system shall not be started only after receiving the instruction for standby. The system gives
“medium-voltage closing allowed” signal when the controller is ready, start is permitted, “remote”
and “cabinet door emergency stop” buttons are released, and no major fault occurs. The system goes
into standby upon receiving “high-voltage ready” signal. Please check the above conditions if the
system cannot be started even there is no fault.
In addition, if the system cannot be started in remote control mode, check whether the “remote control/
local control” switch is in remote control position. If the VSD cannot be started by using the human-
machine interface, check whether the “remote control/local control” switch is in local control position.

3.5.3 No audible alarm when fault occurs

After the user presses “alarm lifted” button, the system continues running under the original fault, and
there will only be fault indication without audible alarm. In the case of shutdown, the user can reset the
entire system by giving “system reset” command so as to restore the audible alarm function.

3.5.4 Alarm sent without display on the interface

When the control system is powered on and PLC operates normally, the VSD system will send alarm if the
human-machine interface is very slow to act. The user shall check whether the power line of the human-
machine interface is in good condition, whether the power switch is closed, and whether the human-
machine interface has entered the control interface normally.

Generally, the medium-voltage VSD is crucial for on-site process. If the VSD fails, it will cause huge
losses. In this way, it is of vital importance to ensure the long-term stable operation of the VSD. Among
many factors affecting its operation, on-site maintenance and management are very important. We
recommend the user to maintain the VSD regularly as shown below:
●● Clean the dust filter on the cabinet regularly and keep cooling air path unobstructed.
●● On-duty personnel or maintenance personnel shall regularly inspect the transformer and record the
temperature of transformer windings.
●● After the transformer is put into operation, cleaning shall be done annually, and insulation
resistance measurement and withstand voltage test shall be conducted periodically.
●● Check and tighten all bolts for electrical connection every 6 months or so.
●● Clean resistance divider regularly to prevent moisture; otherwise, creepage distance may decrease.
●● If the VSD is equipped with arresters, preventive test shall be conducted once every year, including
insulation test and power frequency discharge test. 2500V megger shall be used for the insulation
test, and insulation resistance among the cells shall be no less than 2500MΩ. Refer to product
instructions for specific test methods or consult the supplier. Clean the dust on theprotector's
surface.
●● The recommended element maintenance and replacement intervals are determined based on the
normal operating conditions of the VSD. The VSD shall be checked by qualified personnel, and the
recommendations of the must be followed.

For details, refer to Form 4-1 Summary of Routine Checks on VSD.

Guidance on fabrication of air duct

●● The ducts of the power cell cabinet and transformer cabinet shall be made separately.
●● The ducts shall be made of iron sheet (δ=1-1.5 mm thick) and fixed firmly.
●● The connections of the ducts and air shield shall be sealed. The outlet shall be capable of keeping
rain out and equipped with stainless steel protective net to prevent small animals from entering.
●● Surface treatment: the bottom layer shall be sprayed with anti-rust paint, and the surface shall be
sprayed in the same color as the cabinets.
●● The user shall be responsible for installing the ducts. (Fan shall be installed if axial fan is necessary)
●● The user shall be responsible for drilling holes on the wall in accordance with the requirements on
duct installation as well as repairing the wall after installation.
●● An axial fan shall be installed on the wall if the ducts are longer than 2 m. The user shall be
responsible for providing and connecting supply leads. Note that wire outlets shall be reserved next
to the axial fan when making the ducts.
●● The ducts shall be made straight, and the air outlet shall be lower than the cabinets to prevent rain
water from pouring in.
●● In addition, if the VSD cannot be started in remote control mode, check whether the “remote
control/local control” switch is in remote control position. If the VSD cannot be started by using
the human-machine interface, check whether the “remote control/local control” switch is in local
control position.

Notes on fabrication of air inlet of VSD room

If the user decides to use forced air cooling method to cool the VSD through the air ducts, air inlet is
a must and filter shall be installed at the inlet. The filter shall be made of the same materials as that of
air conditioner, but less dense than the VSD body so as to adapt to the site environment and air inlet
conditions.
Total air exhaust of the VSD is calculated by multiplying the air exhaust of single fan by the number of
fans. Air input and air exhaust of the VSD room shall match the value.
Conventionally, the ducts are installed on the top of the cabinets to directly discharge the heat generated
by the VSD to the outside, and the air inlet of the VSD room can replenish cold air continuously to cool
the system.
The area of the air inlet depends on the practical conditions of the VSD system. The inlet shall be
equipped with air filter with the mesh no more than 5 × 5 mm. Qf represents the ventilation quantity of
the system. Assuming that air velocity V of the air inlet is no more than 3m/s, the area of the air inlet can
be calculated with the formula S≈Qf/V based on Qf=S×V.
If the fan on the top of the cabinets is very close to the air outlet (less than 2 meters without turn in the
course), auxiliary exhaust fan is not necessary. If setting air inlet on site is not easy, installing fan is also an
option to force air intake.
The ducts can be constructed on site after the VSD is installed. We can send installation and debugging
personnel to the site to guide installation. The ducts of the transformer cabinet and power cell cabinet
shall be separated. Mixing up may interfere with the heat dissipation of the power cells.

Notes:
1). The above temperature and humidity are indicators recommended for preventive maintenance.
2). For the user choosing air duct cooling system: there may be conductive dust around the VSD, especially in summer, when the
temperature and humidity are pretty high in most countries, which may have a greater influence on the VSD. To protect the VSD and
ensure smooth operation, we recommend the user to improve the environment in the VSD room by using air conditioner cooling
system and air water- cooling system.
